It was solid work no doubt, but this is also a blatant plot device to cram in a bunch of product tie/promotion tie ins. Nostalgia tinges this movie for most of us, but at the time people were calling them out for such blatant product placement, like we do with any current movie that does it.
@ShinRyojin4 жыл бұрын
damendred yeah there’s a lot of product placement in the film particularly that scene, but that’s because the mall that they filmed in the defunct Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois. It was reconstructed and used as the scene of the chase. Signage belonging to mall tenants was replaced with updated vendors like Toys R Us. The placement was to make the setting look updated and realistic. Product placement isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Honestly who cares if there was a lot of product placement because it was an awesome car chase and the PP didn’t take that fact away.
@damendred14 жыл бұрын
@@ShinRyojin I totally agree with you. Unless it's so out of line with the general 'mise en scene' (gotta get some use out of that filmography minor ;), that it takes me out of the scene I don't care, it's part of the economics of movies. I guess my bitterness comes when people point it out in current movies like it's some new trend, and just completely gloss over all the blatant examples in their cherished childhood movies.
@ShinRyojin4 жыл бұрын
damendred I get where you’re coming from, and I do agree with you when you said that people can be blinded by nostalgia which is very true. There’s been a ton of films that I liked as a kid that looking back I was like “ what the hell was I thinking?” And I do understand that something like product placement can be over done. An example is The Island. The product placement was blatant in that movie but there was really no real explanation why. And yeah it’s funny that people act like product placement is a new thing when it’s been going on for a long time, as you said. I remember when Wayne’s World did a whole scene making fun of product placement and that was back in 92 so you’re right, it’s an old game Hollywood likes to play.

Fun fact: the mall in this scene was actually going to be torn down not long after they shot this scene, so the directors got to actually drive the car through the mall, and at a reduced price. In fact, in the grocery part at the end, the reason the shelves are shown the way they are is because the shelves behind it are all empty. Dunno, just thought that was interesting

If you love that type of music/movie choreography, you'll love Baby Driver. Every single beat of every song in the movie corresponds to an action and many times the themes/words of songs match with what is happening. It's a fantastic film, truly.

You are right! I also love how at 2:35 the squeaking of the car tires fits to the playing song. The whole movie just seems like a very long song to me, because I watched it so often, especially in my childhood. If you listen to anything long enough, you are going to hear it as music at some point .

I've seen this movie dozens of times, and for some reason I always find it hilarious at 5:24 when the one cop car just deliberately cuts through Pier 1 Imports. Like, they're on a straightaway, both cops were lined up down the line, and the one just makes a bee-line in and out of Pier 1. Not sure why, but that cracks me up.
