I always found this scene very heart-warming. Cab Calloway, one of the all-time great entertainers from a bygone era, was given the chance to perform his most iconic song in his classic attire w/ a classic big band setup in front of a gigantic sold-out crowd at the age of 73 and he *KILLED IT*

The opening second of this clip is simply magical. Old Man Curtis shouts "Hit it!" to the band, turns around, and half a century simply _disappears_ as the legend Cab Calloway, the Hi-De-Ho Man himself, takes to the stage in his full splendour without dropping a note.

What makes this performance even more incredible is that Cab Calloway did it under protest. He wanted to perform a more modern version of the song, and was very unhappy when he was told that it had to be the original. He allegedly even had a stand up argument on the set about it. However, when they started recording he threw himself into an impeccable performance, which has turned into a classic.

Every time I see this while watching the film, I just grin ear-to-ear. There's something so heartwarming seeing this icon from the 1920's/1930's still being appreciated in the 1980's. It's so cool seeing that he wasn't just asked to be in this film, but to also perform his hit song.
@InchonDM
@InchonDM 4 жыл бұрын
Cab actually wanted to perform a recent disco remix of the song in the film--he didn't think that anyone in the modern day would be interested in hearing the version from the 30's. He was talked out of it, however, and you can tell it's the right decision--not only is the audience obviously thrilled to be singing along, but the band is besides themselves! And who wouldn't be, to be performing alongside CAB CALLOWAY?

I became a Big Cab Calloway fan in an indirect way... One of my favorite movies is "The Cotton Club"-1984. In it John Barry portrayed Calloway and sang "Minnie The Moocher" in the trademark White Tux With Tails.... It was the first time my ever hearing the song. I was hooked at 19 yrs. Old and went out and found a record of Cab Calloway... Watching "The Blues Brothers" in the late 80's for the first time, was really blown away by This version and thought it was a Brilliant addition to the movie. A lotta ppl don't know that the song was written Specifically for him. When Cab would sing, as a young man, he would sometimes Forget some of the lyrics to a song, so he would put in, "Hi De Ho", or some of the other little "phrases" like this in the place of forgotten lyrics. The writer of the song used this to write what would become Cab's Signature Song, and an All-time Jazz Hit!

Cab Calloway was the greatest entertainer of all time. He invented the show that went with the biz. No other person has created such a combination of music and the one of a kind style to go with it. We love ya, Hep Cat.

1} Cab Calloway- Vocals. Steven Cooper-Guitar, Matt Murphy-Lead Guitar, Donald Dunn- Bass Guitar, Tom Malone-Sax, Willie Hall Drums, Lou Marini- Sax, Alan Rubin -Trumpet 2} Scatt 3} 12 bar 4} Scene is a classic. This song broke into popular culture within 2 times, this being the later. It's cool, announced and is such embedded into our culture they play this a sporting events to get crowds into the game! It also introduced many people my age to Scat, and Scatmant John's Skatman as well.

This is probably his best rendition of the performance. I've seen it in its various re-incarnations that he made over the years from the Soundies to the filmed version in black and white. But here he gives it his most verve and vim. And here he is in his 70s when he was in this movie, and here's an audience barely beyond age 30 familiar with the song and the lyrics. Now that's class and a class act. Those Jazz musicians of Calloway's day were not shy about using the wacky tabaccy--and yet most managed to survive and endure, unlike Belushi who would die from injudicious use of drugs.

When I was a kid, they had this scene on the jumbo tron at some of the braves games I went to. They had the lines on the screen on the screen when the audience joined in, and when it was about 1:57 on this vid, the lines were just jibberish, and it made me crack up to think anyone could keep up with this. Now I know where this is from, and I can watch this scene over and over again thanks to the power of KZbin, and relive whenever this brought a smile to me at baseball games.
