they're called fanned frets. they do what you say here, while also working the intonation.
@BrunodeSouzaLino2 жыл бұрын
Fanned frets are not for that reason. They were invented by Ralph Novax so the strings would have better distributed tension across the neck by having different scale lengths.

@tombstoneharrystudios5842 жыл бұрын
I recall john pizzarelli doing something similar on his 7 string. The nature of the instrument means that he can play Root 5 bassline with one finger, freeing up the other three for chords and melody And like Charlie here, he uses a handful of shapes but his rhythmic groove is so good it works Musically.

What's old is new again. Charlie Hunter sounds like a reincarnation of Bill Doggett crossed with his famous guitarist Billy Butler, with some of his own spicy stuff thrown in for good measure. Doggett for the organ-type chord fragments and bass lines, Butler for the tasty blues-jazz guitar lines, and oh by the way, that drummer sounds great, too.

I love how he vocalizes nonsense as he plays. It adds so much character. Oh yeah and the fact that he plays bass and guitar at same time lol
@lazylion4203 жыл бұрын
it's not nonsense. he's singing. he's vocalizing the notes he's playing. it's known as scat, in jazz. most guitar players (most people who play any instrument) do this instinctively. you sort of sing along with your instrument. you follow the melody. for some, it's a low and almost inaudible humming. for others it comes out yelling (like Stevie Ray Vaughn). some players try to silence their vocalization but they're still feeling the notes. this is why some people make that weird 'guitar face' because the emotion is still coming through.
@mattl54703 жыл бұрын
@@lazylion420 I honestly didn’t know that and I appreciate u for giving me that explanation
@VodkaSelekta3 жыл бұрын
@@mattl5470 It's also a well-known exercise for playing solos as well. Singing the lines first, or singing and playing at the same time, helps you get out of just playing endless licks and into being more tuneful and aware of what you're playing to.
