I’ve been listening to Charlie Hunter since 2013 and I’ve always been fascinated by his playing style. When Hybrid Guitars was announced I was so keen to see players from different genres and backgrounds begin using this instrument and this is the most clear and concise demo I’ve seen yet. Well done! 👏🏽

That was an awesome breakdown of how that instrument is played. I have been listening to Charlie Hunter for many years and have had the good fortune to see him play live a few times, and could never quit figure out what he was doing (although I loved the sound of it). Charlie Hunter makes it look so fluid and of course he is fast in his transitions, so to take the time to explain how the instrument is set up, slow it down, and show different levels of playing and how to dress it up was illuminating. Thanks R.J.! (I can’t believe this is the first time I watched this!)

Has anyone ever looked into Scott Lucas of Local H? He's been customizing his guitars for years to have both Guitar and Bass pickups with separate jacks for each. When he plays the Bass side it goes out to a Bass Amp rig while the Guitar jack goes out to his Guitar Amp rig and yes, pedals on both for interesting effects. Local H has toured for years as a two man band thanks to this setup. No Bass player.

Good explanation and the lesson. The scale is 29.5 on the bass side and end on 25 on the last string. The thickest bass gauge I can use is the D'Addario Tape Wound black ETB92S (short scale) at 105 for the "E" but it's tight and you will probably ruin the silks. I prefer the GHS Precision Flats 3020 set where the "E" is .095 . I think they use String joy now but mine came with D'Addario EXL170S at .100. for the "E". I use 49-10 set for the guitar section (discarding the first and 6th strings ) I find it best to apply contrapuntal techniques and it expands on the typical Jazz comping. Novax is creating again the CH-8 string and that is tuned to E rather than G. Charlie did start with the E tuning but he thought it did not have enough pop and he raised it up when he went with Traugott 7-string. There are short scale basses at 29 scale and those are strung with regular gauge and tuned to E as well - I think the Hybrids can be tuned to E - the bass will be a bit floppy but still playable. The Hybrid Guitar folks are so helpful. I've been listening to Charlie since the 90's but it took me until 2020 to get one. Thanks to Hybrid Guitars

Nice explanation. So it's the lower the string of a bass with standard tuning and the middle 4 strings of the guitar in standard tuning with a CAPO at the 3rd fret (aka tuned up a minor 3rd). At least standard middle 4 string shapes work while you try and figure out the bass notes. Even thought the change is not that radical from a standard guitar it's more than enough to require many hours of sorting through pull this off, especially when improvising .

Charlie is a once in a lifetime talent a lot like Stanley Jordan. I also think Voodoo might be the greatest produced R&B album of the last 35 years. Also Charlie. But seeing him live over the years it just seems like this style of playing is basically a way of him not having to play a bass player or organ player. He plays Organ Trio with just himself and a drummer. And honestly for his talent, the show is pretty boring. Once you get over the gimic every song sounds exactly the same. Because they don’t play any songs they’re just glorified jams. It’s basically a way for him to tour while ultimately paying only one other person. Something that started as a musical avenue for me has just become a way for him to keep more of the paycheck. I’ve seen plenty of one man band musicians who can do the same but they choose to pay other touring musicians because it benefits the music and the performance. Personally i’ll never go see Charlie again, it just seems like he’s there to pick up some quick cash…And honestly after awhile i’d rather hear a bassist and keys player on different instruments for dynamics. Charlie can play bass, and guitar very very well, he doesn’t need to play hybrid.
