I feel being able to play slide in standard tuning only enhances playing slide in open tuning. There is so much technique that can be learned in standard tuning.

That's a great insight and I agree, it helps you dial in your technique and I find myself moving around more in standard which helps keep me from getting locked into one spot on the neck.
