I love our 2018 Sequoia. It’s such a comfortable truck. The V8 it’s amazing and gas isn’t that bad. We drove from NJ to Florida and I was averaging 18 plus. I filled up twice. The room for the kids and knowing that it just will start every time and not give any issues, is worth keeping for years to come. No rattles so far. I have everything I need. No crazy tech but I don’t need it.

Good video Jon, hopefully you won't get torched too much but you can't build videos that please everyone. This is a good honest review from someone that has owned both for more than a minute, despite what some might think. I think the most appealing thing about 2nd Gen is the reliability and how the "well built" feeling lasts up to 200k+. It's not just reliable, 2nd Gens with 100k feel the same as 2nd gens with 200k, it's astounding how good the build quality is, but it has its limits. It will never drive like the new one, It won't tow as much as the new one, it won't double as a race truck, but it will probably tow for longer and outlast the new. For folks that are constantly cycling vehicles, 3rd gen is probably awesome, more fun to drive and they way to go (just don't keep out of warranty). For folks that want to just buy something and keep for 10yrs+, 2nd gen and it's not even close. I think it's two completely different types of people.

Jon.... there is NO such thing as the perfect car. It does not exist. Never has, never will. That being said, I love the plans you have for this truck. I would much rather watch videos on the evolution of this specific truck than a 3rd gen. I have a 25 limited factory lifted 3rd gen. Probably my most favorite truck I've ever owned, but the 2nd gen is so good. And with it in your capable hands, I know it will be awesome. Excited for the supercharger!

@@TRDJonexactly. My wife and I have made multiple road trips from NW VA to parts of Ohio and southern Louisiana with our ‘22 1794 long bed. It’s a great road trip truck. Average 22 - 23 MPG highway with the two of us and about 500 lbs of gear. We bought this truck for that and towing our travel trailer. At 38,000 miles I have worked with Toyota to solve all of our wind (whistle) door/window noises and solved an annoying brake issue. The majority were covered under warranty, including the front brakes. Waiting for the engine swap in February (just notified by the dealer ). All that said, if they don’t warranty the replacement engines with a new 5/60 warranty, I may trade it in on a 2025 Platinum or 1794.

There are 3rd gen’s already pushing 200k miles with zero issues and an open recall. They get to drive those suckers till every bit of life is milked out of those engines only to have a brand new engine & set of turbos waiting for them free of charge when needed. That seems even more peace of mind.

@ I personally own a 24 Tundra and follow and participate in a lot of the 3rd gen Facebook groups. I’m just going off of other users posting pictures of their odometers. If you are looking for specifics, I believe it was the “2022+ Toyota Tundras Owners”. It was on a post a few months back about the highest mileage documented. There was a handful in the 160k then a 180k and 190k if I recall correctly. The highest was 208,963 for a 2022 SR5. I took a screenshot cause I was super impressed. I love the raw feeling of my 2nd gen TRD pro. I also had a 2010 reg cab long box before that. Talk about a REAL truck. However, I do agree with the seat complaints. I don’t feel like I’m being hugged enough by the seat and I feel like I’m subconsciously always fighting to stay in the seat. Also, having a powered drivers seat but not passenger seat is just silly.

I love my tundra I drive it everyday with all its flaws because its not sitting at the dealership for repairs, it just works.

I owned a ‘21 TRD Pro and traded it for a ‘22 Platinum Hybrid. I have since traded that one as well and thinking back, the only aspects I liked better on the 2nd gen - resale, resale, and resale. Otherwise that ‘22 was a better daily driver in every way. That said, the interior fit and finish on the 3rd gen still has miles to go. I own a new Land Cruiser now and it’s sooo much nicer. Whether that’s a testament to Japan manufacturing or better design and materials , it’s noticeable better build quality.

Really good video. Loved the comparison. It’s funny everyone has a fav. Some love the old v8 some love the new hybrid. Years ago the FJ cruiser was not a big deal, now it is. One thing about Toyotas is they always weather the storm and years from now they will all be considered favorites. Everyone one dogs the new Land Cruiser but having all of them I love it. I loved the 200 series, now love the 250. Loved the old Supra from the 80s now love the new ones. Loved the older 4Runners and I have had most of them, now loves last years and then new ones. Morale of the story you just can’t go wrong. (But the price’s are getting crazy). Keep your the awesome videos.

However, when it comes to trusting a vehicle off grid, 50 miles from anything, I would hands down take the 2ng gen. My 2010 TRD Crewmax 5.7 has the 20” Toyota T Force wheels, with Nitto Ridge Grapplers 33’s? gets 18.4mpg on the highway!! (I just did a trip to FL). Around town I’m getting approx 14mpg. *The key to getting great highway mpg, cruise control, speed limit, no hard acceleration and tires inflated properly!! I love my 2010 seats are plush cloth, great for road trip with good lumbar..*My rear seats RECLINE too! One more thing, the plastic used in the 2nd is much higher quality, thicker and more durable then 3rd gen. *Many complaints out now about 3rd gen interior scratching easily.. Nice review! Get the wife a small inflatable travel ottoman for her feet.

We bought brand new a 2017 SR5 5.7L i get 15-16 MPG City. Towing my 19’ Airstream and average 12.5 mpg. My Chevy Avalanche w/ 5.3 L (268 HP) thats 100 hp less and it made same city mpg but 10-11 mpg towing same camper. Not sure if I can get a lot if i sell it with garage kept 48k miles I’ve been offered $19k-$20k by private and dealership. It will be in our family for many, many years 😊

Then weird on the no heated seats because I have cooled and heated seats in mine. Guess it's based in a Sr5 probably but my platinum actually feels built good to me. When you shut the door you can feel the build quality in the truck.

That truck is a gem it’s def a beast there are some things you have to do to the truck but that’s every truck you buy it’s not fun unless you have to do some mods the Led lights and the new radio every one has to do unless you have the 14 inch monitor but you still had to replace the speakers because the factory JBLs suck the magnets are so small on any of the speackers the JBO‘s and other factory speakers if you buy the ones that are not plug-in play there’s videos on KZbin they’re plug-and-play you just had to buy a couple extra plugs you save a lot of money on the speackers I kept seeing all these videos the plug-in play speakers are like $500 no matter which brand that you got then I seen a couple other videos where you get the same brand speackers that or not plug and play but they are plug and play it is fine and extra couple clips and you save a lot of money there’s definitely a few videos on KZbin that I seen because I was wondering why no matter what brand speaker I bought I was still spending $500 and then I seen the video that’s not what they cost as people making money on the speackers when you can hook up the plugs yourself 👍👍👍👍👍🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾💪💪💪💪💪🦾🦾🦾🦾love that truck

Gas mileage does suck but I can get easily get 17 mpg highway in my 2020 TRD Pro with the Westcott Designs lift and E load 295’s. I do not use cruise control though and feel like I can “control” its shiftiness better without it which I believe helps with getting better mpg’s.

I cannot comment about the Gen3 Tundras as I've not driven one. But, your comments about the 2.5? I have to agree with most. My greatest gripe is about the amount of hard plastic throughout the cab. It does not feel good to the touch and scratches incredibly easily. Yes, the mpg is really poor and I wish it had an 8 or 10spd transmission. The steering is a bit vague at highway speeds. However, I find the front seats comfortable on my 2020 Pro. Maybe there was a change from the 2019 to the 2020 or maybe just a better fit for me. I prefer the higher stance of the seats. And, I don't agree that the truck feels underpowered. Yes, it downshifts when more load is encountered. That is because that the 6th gear is an overdrive ratio and so must downshift in order to match optimum torque/rpm for the condition. And, finally.... reliability. The 2.5 gen has proven itself over many model years and is top of the class across all brands for reliability. I'm sure that is why the resale value remains stable.

I totally disagree. The TNGA vehicles are superior. That said I like old school vehicles better in some ways. The 19 RAV4 for example is superior to the POS 18 RAV4. The new 4Runner is better at least when it comes to low end torque and fitting bigger tires. They are improving the TNGA vehicles slowly every year. The 25 Camry for example is the best one ever.

@@BigAltimaEnergy719 They don’t burn any oil and the transmission is smooth as butter. There are zero reports of this engine burning oil unless abused or not maintained. The shifting behavior is based on input from the driver. Resetting the ECU and getting a better driver fixes the issue. My early build 19 shifts great. It’s the smoothest transmission I’ve ever experienced. The engine burns zero oil at 140k.

I like my 3rd gen (Limited TRD OR) at 31K miles ... I like the power- I don't spend a ton on gas like I expected- I like all the cool new features- the family is comfortable on road trips- I like the look- and I'm getting a brand new engine. I don't have all the rattles and wind noise as some. I've kept mine stock- I put Falken Wildpeak AT4's on it and it looks pretty good (20's)- It is by far not a perfect truck and I guess you have to spend $150K to get a perfect truck these days- not sure. I always get compliments on my truck. I know Ford had the most recalls last year (2024) and I believe they struggle with recalls every single year. I appreciate the video Jon- I was curious what your overall opinion was going to be when you bought the 2nd gen. Happy 2025!

3rd gen is for people who want a daily commuter but don't want an suv or a car and want a truck more as a novelty. 2nd gen is better at doing the truck stuff and much simpler, but you sacrifice in not having a car like ride or good MPG. Both are good in their own ways, but cater to different buyers. Just an example, I've seen many 2nd gen "work truck" or commercially used tundras. I've seen 0 3rd gens used in this fashion.

So I completely agree with gas mileage, I still own a 2011 2gen obviously the earlier model and my back seat can slide forward and back It also folds down just not completely flat, don’t know why they ever changed the back seat to be more stationary, bad call

I get about 17.9 mpg on a long trip. It does looks better with larger tires ,but I am not willing to sacrifice more mpg. Wait till you throw that supercharger on, mpg will get worst.

See if you notice your Tundra clicking when you are turning, as if you were pulling out. Mine did, and Toyota said everything was fine. Drove me nuts. It sounded like I was hitting metal together. I hope it doesn't. For the record, mine was a 2019 TRD Offroad.

Should done Nissan titan platinum over bulit but new technology in the middle both those trucks Toyota should done that instead of the turbo engine I think ford has advantage on that right now nothing beats v8 engines no matter which brand right now

Dont touch the engine. Its an abosulte gem. Change out the coolant asap though. Its best for its long term longevity.

Good assessment Jon. I am more disappointed with Toyota than either of the trucks. There’s no excuse for them going backwards in the areas they did. I have a 2018 double cab and the back seat is perfectly usable. The 3rd gen double cabs might as well not even have a seat. Plus that turning radius you mentioned. Total deal breakers for me. Like I said, I am thoroughly disappointed in Toyota for screwing up things that are so fundamental. These can’t be fixed with aftermarket upgrades.
