This is more about Penn State making a statement than it is about X's and O's. Jim Knowles is certainly an upgrade over Tom Allen, but that really is secondary. Penn State is finally throwing money around and just stole the #1 DC from a top contender. Penn State is done playing around, that's the message. Setting the record for the highest paid assistant in the history of college football is putting folks on notice. Penn State has been a program to settle for second and third tier options. That is no longer the case.

I find it amusing the Penn State fans think this is because somehow Penn State/Franklin beat OSU in this. In reality it had nothing to do with that... Larry Johnson and Knowles did not get along for 3 years and Ryan Day grew increasingly tired of the friction...which was then causing some friction between Day and Knowles in addition to the constant week-to-week s*** between Larry and Knowles. So the relationship with Knowles had to end unless LJ was going to retire... which didn't happen. The first year with Knowles the defense was not very good at all....then in year 2 they were #3 D overall and obviously this year #1 in most categories. I'll be surprised if Penn State's defense doesn't have some problems this year because I remember the Buckeye defenders who came back in year two said it was so much easier in the second year to understand and know what they were supposed to do. In a strange way I think this is actually better for Ohio State because the relationship with Knowles had run its course and I think Ohio state was going to have a problem with complacency. I think this really helps day the coaches and the players get that edge back

As a Buckeye fan, l will say, you got a good one. But it wasn't overnight that the Knowles defenses worked at Ohio State. Remember, it's not the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmy's and Joe's. There is no question that the players that came back were the difference in the success of the Ohio State defense. Jim Knowles is a good one but I hope you have a Jack Sawyer or JTT or a Cody Simon a Tylic Williams a Ty Hamilton a Lathom Ransom a Caleb Downs. And all the great depth the Buckeyes had as well.

QB isn’t a problem, anyway. Drew took a massive step this year from last, and there’s nothing to suggest he won’t do it again with his 2nd year under the same OC. And Hagans is just now starting to get his recruits into the room. Ross was a big get, and all beat reporters say they’ll continue to stay on that position in the spring window. DC needed filled, and they went and filled it in a big way. If you get 2 receivers to really make a difference in space, and Drew takes the next logical step in his development, this hire can be a game changer.

I'd be curious to know how it went down, and whether Nate will share the exact details. Completely my own theory here, but guessing his absence at the celebration led to questions and questions led to answers, which made the agreement public. If he goes to the celebration I feel like the same questions would have been asked, just to him directly, and the result still would have been the agreement being made public. I think the idea of waiting was great in theory so as not to overshadow his former team, but in a society where news is instantaneous, it didn't work out.

I think Jim Knowles is given too much credit for a talented senior laden Buckeye defense. One of Knowles’ philosophies is not tackling during practices. It’s a double edged sword. Less injuries but the Buckeye defense has had a lot of missed tackles during games during his tenure. I think he is an average DC.

@@jbgibson0hard disagree defense collapsed against Notre Dame in the 2nd half giving up 24 points in one half and gave up 45 against Oregon in the two biggest games of the year. Offense had 37 and 24 points in those games which is typically enough to win those games.

Penn State historically has lesser talent that OSU - although some PSU fans delude themselves into thinking they are somehow equal. It seems PSU always has one room they are slowly rebuilding while OSU just reloads along all position groups. Then we play them and the difference becomes clearly visible. The key question then becomes whether or not Knowles can achieve that OSU level of siccess when the talent is some what less. To be determined - and place your bets!
