These works by Blumenfeld are a great addition to the Russian canon of composer/pianists. Viner performs with amazing phrasing and astute voicing. The left hand etude really flows like water.

He was not russian, he was born on the territory of Ukraine, that was a part of so-called "Empire" and later Soviet Union.

The music is indeed amazing but the performance, in places, shows that the Pianist lacks the technical skills to pull off some of the Preludes - several are played mechanical and quite repetitive; I get the feeling that Mr Viner plays several passages to move away from the technical demands ever so quickly...Pity because he is better in his Alkan and Thalberg.

I discover this talented composer, who succeeded in keeping his position in Moskow while not being in line with the "socialist realism". Quite honestly, Tchaikovski's influence is quite obvious, and in my personal opinion blurs somehow Chopin's influence, since the two styles are difficult to bring together. . Quite surprising for a man who premiered Tristan in Russia and Boris in France. I cannot hear any influence of Scriabin or Szymanowski (they were relatives) but perhaps it was hard under Stalin's regime .......All in all, not the major Russian composer, but excellent works. Would love hearing ne of his oechetral scores .... a cpnductor and Russian composer; who premiered Tristan and Boris ..... 💗💗💗

There are several complete sets of the Op 17 available; its a matter of personal taste but I prefer the version by Philip Thomson, perhaps a vast contrast to his complete religious playings of Liszt...
@s1earle Жыл бұрын
In places the playing is very good however in the preludes which rely on bravura alone, Mr Viner falls short in his technique...

Because you might not know, Blumenfeld was born in Elizavetgrad, now Kropyvnytskiy, to an Austrian-Jewish father and Polish mother. I have performed his music not only in his hometown, but also internationally (Elbphilharmonie etc). I see that your channel has no content. I rest my case.
