The Narcissist
Looked in the mirror
So many people standing there
I walked towards them into the floodlights
I heard no echo
There was distortion everywhere
I found my ego
I felt rubato standing there
Found my transcendent
It played in mono painted blue
You were the pirot
I was the dark room
I’m going to shine a light in your eyes
You’ll probably shine it back on me
But I won’t fall this time
With godspeed I’ll heed the signs
I saw the solstice
The service station on the road
I took the acid
Under the white horses
My heart it quickened
I could not tear myself away
Became addiction
If you see darkness look away
I’m going to shine a light in your eyes
You will probably shine it back on me
But I won’t fall this time
With godspeed I’ll heed the signs
Oh glorious world
Oh potent waves valleys gone wild
Connect us to love and keep us peaceful for a while
I’m going to shine a light in your eyes
You will probably shine it back on me
But I won’t fall this time
With godspeed I’ll heed the signs
I’m a shine a light in your eyes
You probably shine it back it back on me
But I won’t fall this time with godspeed I’ll heed the signs
But I won’t fall this time with godspeed I’ll heed the signs

Damon, or anyone else from the band, I doubt you'll see this, but here goes. I am codependent. A while ago, I dated my first narcissist. Took everything from me. All of my money, friends, my car (she crashed it) yada yada. I've been slowly rebuilding my life but finding a job has been challenging without a car. I've loved gorillaz since the first album. Had that shit in my Walkman every day. Dracula remains my favorite song of yours. I just wanted to let you know that your lyrics here describe what it's like perfectly. The melancholy, the always trying to "figure them out", all of that. The hope spots, the up and down, the back and forth. I am also a surf fisherman, so getting back to the waves to experience love, that line piques me so much. She never let me go out there. Always found excuses. I want to say that I won't forget either. Godspeed, next time I swear I'll pay attention to the signs. They might be chameleons, but nobody on that dark triad will ever be able to fool me ever again. Thank you for continuing to produce absolutely awesome music. I used to make electronica, but my stuff was too experimental. I didn't want to compromise my art to make money. I have no idea how artists of your caliber balance that, but the results of that balancing act are amazing. I also want to say that if you wrote this song because you were damaged by a narcissist, stay strong. The healing process is long and complicated but you will get through it. Every day the sun rises without you next to them is another day of freedom.

Those kind of words mean a lot too. I always feel weak when I start crying over songs and scenes in TV shows and things like that but I know in my head it is my soul reaching out and being able to connect with something, it's not a weakness but something that usually keeps up going if anything. When I find others feeling the same it builds up that part of me deep inside and like this usually makes me reach out. In reality it's just totally different ballparks. They don't write the same kind of songs or even have a similar sound for that matter. Blur doesn't have anywhere near the hits-per-album as Oasis does. Not by any longshot, deepcuts, or fan favorites. This song tho? Phenomenal.

Lyrics are brilliant... I can only think Damon (assuming he wrote them) has experienced a relationship with a narcissist... Evokes so much... So accurate ... Anyone whos been there, will know... And if you haven't... Count yourself fortunate... I could not tear myself away Became addiction If you see darkness, please, turn away! I would shine a light in your eyes... You'll always shine it back on me... Thankfully, i wont fall for it again.

I'm not an expert, but this is my guess.. the word Narcissist comes from the Greek story about Narcissus, he was very vain and would look at his reflection every time he passed a pool of water. The god turned him into a flower (Daffodil, which is also called narcissus). The flower looks like a person looking down (sort of).. So the word Narcissist back in the old days used to just mean a vain person looking at himself in the mirror. Over time, it evolved into the super negative word it is today.. So the way I took this song, the singer is talking to his reflection in the mirror.. he says he will shine a light in your eyes, you'll probably shine it back on me".. because he's talking to his reflection, reflecting on life.. maybe I'm 100% wrong, but that's my guess.

That’s how I like to take it. I’m exiting a year-long relationship with a Covert Narc. It’s so bad…you don’t know till you know (hopefully y’all reading this don’t someday)… And even by then you may be not ready to “go”… Once you’ve had real feelings for the person. I’ll prevail stronger and much wiser from this mess. All she had on me was emotional leverage. That’s it. She really was/isn’t that smart when you consider the warped logic she possesses. Computing her arguments were like trying to listen to anything inside a tornado.

Did you feel a third axis there in the lyrics? I am not saying God. But perhaps an awareness of “otherness” that Damon detects and fears. If so, while it’s good to turn away from evil, there’s an even more powerful direction yet.

@@GT380man I feel that he is intimating that we are all reflections of one another, and with that realisation the ego becomes sublimated into a greater consciousness, an "otherness" as you succinctly put it. I'm not sure that it's perceived from a source of fear, but I could well be wrong. I'm curious, please elucidate further.

What do you think the meaning of the song is? I would say that he had an acid trip/s and experienced a loss of ego, thus exposing his narcissistic traits. You can learn you have been playing the dunce and getting it all wrong. Truths about our disenfranchised society are exposed. You see that you,... are the Pierrot. The line 'So many people standing there ' relates to the many different personalities/masks that he wears. He's looking in the mirror whilst tripping which is addictive, and can also be very scary, your face can change in strange ways. He also experienced time dilation, time speeding up and slowing down. He's wants to learn from his experience.and act on the lessons. I would say its part of a midlife crisis (from experience,). The song is the reflection of the experience. Damon's voice sounds fantastic. And the guitars are really catchy without being too intrusive. I can't just listen to it once,. It then repeats in my mind. My subconscious reminding me of the lessons I learned. Beautifully done. I'm obsessed. ❤
