Bluthner straight-strung 1920. The best upright action ever?

4:14 Skye boat song arranged for piano,
Bluthner, Bechstein and Lipp in particular recognised the advantage of the straight-strung underdamper action, namely that the tenor area is more even in tone and the damping better than an overstrung.
But to add to this, Bluthner made this detachable damper system, making access to the dampers much easier for regulation. They also used the same system on their overstrungs of the same period.

Straight-strung underdamper, seems quite rare combination. That discrete damper action seems very nice, spoon adjustment can be quite difficult on normal action but here it would be a real piece of cake!

@@RobertsPianos I have old 1900 straight-strung Blüthner upright but it's overdamper. I've seen Blüthner from 1926 which was over-strung but still had similiar overdamper action like mine has.

Would love to have one. I dont need an overstrung upright at home. Its too noisy. Straight-strung pianos have the benefit of better registers plus lower volume. Why would I care about a concert sound on my living room? Hell no! Leave the noisy pianos for the Carnegie Hall. Straight-strung pianos should come back.

I have a strait strung piano but mine has 2 strings per note and the sound is so magical and nothing like a modern piano. I wish these options had never gone away as the modern piano ruins so much music including everything I write and more people would play if we had those options today. Finding a strait strung piano in my area is so hard that even the piano I found from the 1850s was just a modern overstrung piano on the inside and the soundboard being in pieces mislead me into thinking it was a period instrument until I discovered it was just broken but I did find one and it handed it's self to me so easily so I don't have to give up piano.

I have the cast-iron harp from an old straight-strung piano. Never been sure what to do with it. No maker's name.

Musicians these days would prefer a cross strung Piano cause it's more compact and has a better low end. They've added transitional strings to achieve a more consistent tone.

Do you happen to have a score of your rendition of The Skye Boat Song? I've been hunting for this arrangement for months and I can't find it, but it's a brilliant arrangement, which i'm desperate to play!
