@@mdhen01 @Marshmello being responsible = spend within your means. Know when to splurge on something and how to not overtly impulse buy. Yes it's hard but when you are aware of where your money goes, you're being responsible. No one is saying to be a perfect saver, I am defs not. Moral is, just don't wild out. At the end of the day, a credit card is borrowed money 🤷🏾♀️ if ppl can't handle paying back that debt, then they shouldn't own one or should educate themselves more on the topic.

I’d rather learn about taxes and mortgages and credit than calculus which you won’t even need in the real world unless you have a specific job that calls for it! But all of us gotta pay taxes, want to live on our own, etc...SMH. But just be mindful of your credit card! Pay it off in full each month to avoid interest and also accumulating debt. I learned that the hard way 🙃

Yeah I’m older than BM & Ashley and it saddens me that the US school curriculum still doesn’t teach basic personal finance to the younger generation. I was dumb at math and couldn’t imagine grasping even pre-calc, but honestly how many ppl need to know theoretical math? No matter what path you choose in life, you’re going to need to learn how to pay taxes and how to budget your personal finances. Why don’t they teach these necessary life skills in school? It’s as if the US school system wants you to be financially illiterate and end up in debt...

I always heard that credit cards were scary, but once I grew up I learned to budget and that made me realize that some people just aren't financially responsible. It's a habit, that's why it's called your "spending habits" so just work on building a better, more responsible habit. I did research on budgeting and credit cards by myself (and I'm still learning), and it's tough in the beginning, but you get used to it and then it kinda becomes automatic.

I highly highly suggest building credit EARLY! Especially if you're responsible enough with your money. I remember my first credit card was a $500 limit. Implementation of your own credit card (not mommy or daddys) while you're a young adult will teach you a lot. It taught me a lot about personal finance and I'm still learning. I highly recommend the subreddits r/personalfinance for y'all in the states and r/personalfinancecanada for my fellow maple leaves. Educate yourself on your money and let it work for you!! Do not however, get a credit card if you just intend to max it out to stunt n flex ur drip. It's borrowed money honeyzzz, make sure you pay it off!! That said. 4:23 Taxes are something else at times. That's soo good that you have a financial advisor to do it for you. Then, just check over the documents to make sure it is done right.
Treat your credit card like a debit card and you won't end up overspending. Put all your purchases on it only if you know you have the money RIGHT NOW to pay it all back. I suggest everyone get a credit card early on to start building that credit. Not sure how it works in Korea, but i know that a lot of the countries like the US use your credit history to get you rates on larger purchases like a car or home. The longer your history without major hiccups, the better your credit score and rates.
@i_treasure_u_forever35234 жыл бұрын
2:13 I don't blame you BM. When you get a credit card, you have discipline yourself to not spend over your budget. All it is, is money loan to you from the bank. I'm 29 and I have had 3 credit cards (10,000$ combined) for the last 4 years. I got them with the intention to travel and maxed them out on my first trip because it was a long 2 month voyage. When I got back from my trip it took about 2 and half years of saving to get it to 25%. I mostly only use my credit cards now and then pay it off automatically from my checking account to keep it in the 25%-30% sweet spot range to keep my credit score up. The higher your credit score the more financial opportunities you have. I've been doing this method for about a year and my credit score has become excellent. When I finally go back to school after the pandemic is over it will be easy for me to get loans and financial aid for my education. It just takes a bit of trial, error, a bit of math and experience to get the hang of it. It shouldn't be scary. :)

Yeah it’s good for them to learn the basics for their own knowledge. I’ve read horror stories of managers stealing money blind from artists. Since they’re foreigners living in Korea and likely classified as independent contractors, I’d imagine it’s a bit more difficult. I don’t know if they have to pay both US & Korean taxes either. Better if they sit down with someone who can explain everything to them so they’re informed.

A thing my highschool teacher taught me (though I haven't put it to use since I don't have a cc) is to only use the card for a monthly metrocard, only that and pay it at the end. Easiest way to build the credit I guess (this probably doesn't apply everywhere, but if you have bus fairs I guess)
@slalomie4 жыл бұрын
Ha you’re in NY? That’s actually a pretty good idea. A credit card is basically borrowed money you have to pay back at the end of the month. Treat a credit card like cash/debit card. Only use it to pay for things you can pay off in full at the end of the month. Otherwise, if you make only the minimum payment, you will have to pay interest on top of the leftover amount you owe. That’s how people end up in trouble paying more than they owe. It’s how credit card companies make their money.

One tip I have about a credit card is if you are using it specifically to build your credit make sure you have the money already. Example you are trying to build your credit so you want to make a purchase that’s of let’s say $150 dont buy that item unless you already have that money now and save it till you pay it off. So then you won’t be afraid or feel such a burden when you pay it off. Also try not to spend more than 30% of your credit card limit !!
@chichi73914 жыл бұрын
Ashley you should increase the limit cause if you spend the same as usual, but have a higher limit you'll be using a smaller percentage of the credit each month which is good for your credit score. Having a higher limit doesn't mean you need to spend more. But you know yourself best so if it would tempt you to spend more, I guess don't do it then haha

Debt card is way safer than a credit card ,yet they put us in worrisome place still 😅
@user-rt3kf7ru9g4 жыл бұрын
It's safer in the sense that it holds you back from overspending, but when it comes to fraudulent charges, you're much more protected with credit. With debit it can be a hassle, or just plain impossible, to dispute depending on the situation. If someone gets a hold of your debit, they can wipe you clean whereas with credit there's a max cap and they'll just consider it fraud, so no charges. Either way, the biggest thing is as long as you regularly keep an eye on your account(s) for any suspicious activity, there should be no problem.
@nappylappy4 жыл бұрын
@@user-rt3kf7ru9g actually got debit card it: 1_substrates from your own balance 2_there's daily limit actually,and notification too (( phone_email etc ) 3_won't worry about growing added fees for late payment like for credit card. I actually have a lot to say about credit card. 1. Get a credit card with a good reward program. ( Good introduction bonus: 0% interest first year + spend a certain amount to get intro reward bonus money) 2. Have this mentality. Use a credit card and treat it like your debit/check card. You are spending that amount of money anyways if you use your debit card so why not use your credit card instead and get them cash back reward. It might not be a lot but it's better than nothing and over time it builds up. ( I bought my plane ticket with only reward points.) 3. Every month payoff the WHOLE ENTIRE balance!!! Don't be tempted by the minimum amount due. Credit card company be out here trying to tempted you into paying less but in the end you are paying more because of interest. Ex. originally $5 🍕 after months of interest 🍕 now costed you $10 . INTEREST IS NOT MONEY YOU SPENT buying things you like and etc. So why you gotta pay extra. I think owning a credit card is great! I don't know how does building credit work but I having one because I like reward/cashback. It goes without saying you should exercise good spending habits. Budget and planning. What's your income minus your fix expenses every month. How much money you have left over to enjoy life and save?
@slalomie4 жыл бұрын
Yep you’ve got it down! When I was a teenager, I was a bit hesitant to get a credit card bc I saw how much debt my brother accrued overspending and I was afraid. But if you treat it like cash/debit card that you have to pay off in full every month, it’s great. Like you said, the points and rewards can be pretty nice. Building credit is exactly what you’re doing 😄 As long as you don’t use more than say 40-50% of your credit limit every month and pay your card in full monthly, your credit will be great. Good credit is basically saying that you’re good with money and likely to pay your bills on time. It can be useful in the future if you make a big purchase like a car or house that typically require monthly payments, so you can get favorable lower interest rates.

Bro how is BM 28 years old without a credit card?? Maybe it’s different in Korea, but in the US you have to have credit in order to buy things like cars, or to rent in most areas. I got my first credit card when I was 19. That being said, I would suggest paying as much of it off as you can every month, and always do it on time. They can charge late fees, and the money leftover that you don’t pay off will accrue more interest the longer is sits unpaid in your balance. That’s how they trick you into spending more money in the long run.

What's a check card ?? Why does all your money go out at the same time for a whole month and doesn't appear on your account for every purchase ???" Haha Get Real reminding me of the little, less known difference and things to be mindful of when you want to visit / live in another country !
@slalomie4 жыл бұрын
A check card is a debit card. It’s linked to your checking account - it’s immediately deducting money from your bank account for each purchase. With a credit card, you’re borrowing money to use and ideally you pay it off in full every month. If you only make the minimum payment, you get charged interest on top of the money you owe. It’s how credit card companies make their money. Korea has both. I think BM and Ashley were talking about being more comfortable with debit cards because the money is immediately taken out of their checking accounts, so they see the balance difference in real time.
@semsclassic17504 жыл бұрын
@@slalomie Thank you for the great explanation ! Both are called credit cards where I'm from. Debit cards can only withdraw cash from ATM. But it does make a lot of sense that they wouldn't want one indeed, how is it advantageous ? I think Ashley mentioned building up credit ?
@slalomie4 жыл бұрын
Sems Classic Ashley talked about recently getting a credit card so she could build up her credit. Credit is a score/rating credit agencies use to determine how financially responsible & reliable you are at paying off your bills each month. You build good credit by using your credit card regularly and paying it off in full every month. Credit is important when you want to make a big purchase - like a car or house. Since most people don’t have the cash to buy these big purchases outright, you borrow money from a bank to pay it off in monthly installments over the course of many months/years. Banks charge interest or a percentage fee to allow you to borrow money from them so you can pay these purchases off over months/years. The better your credit, the lower your interest rate is. Overall, the cost of your big purchase is lower if you have good credit.
@semsclassic17504 жыл бұрын
@@slalomie So your loans interest change depending on your past history ? That's actually fascinating. Most loans I've encountered here have fixed interests, and banks / organisms determine your eligibility based on submitted files. It does make sense to have a credit card in Korea indeed if they get you such advantages, but it seems like a rough patch or a sudden illness would make a serious dent in your ability to make a loan afterwards. Interesting. I guess both systems have their pros and cons !

I'm 30 and I still don't have my own credit card that's entirely mine. I have a Costco card that I use for gas and for getting through the door and paying for my own groceries, but that card is actually under my mom's membership (since Costco allows two family in the same household to be on the same membership) and so the bill goes to her, not me.
@slalomie4 жыл бұрын
If you have and use a debit card responsibly, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get a credit card. Just use it to buy things you normally use cash or debit for and pay off the balance in full every month. Building good credit is useful when you want to make a big purchase like a car or house. Since those big purchases are typically paid off over the course of many months/years, banks charge interest to allow you to borrow money. Having good credit allows you to get better, lower interest or borrowing rates. This means you overall end up paying less by the time it takes you to pay back your car/house.

A credit card is basically borrowed money you have to pay back at the end of the month. You usually pay off your credit with actual money from your checking account. A credit score basically judges how reliable you are at paying your bills off every month. Good credit is useful in the future if you make a big purchase like a car or house that requires you to split the cost into monthly payments.
