Learning just a little Hebrew and Greek is a great way to introduce a new heresy into the world.

Thank you for a wonderful video. I'm in Beginning Greek in Biblical Mastery Academy (BMA), and here is my most hated phrase in a sermon: "In Greek, this means...." Immediately, my thought is: "If that's what it means in Greek, why wasn't it translated into English that way?" Most of the time, the preacher gives us a semantic range, picks the one he likes, and runs with it. Thank you, BMA, for helping me understand what I don't know I don't understand.

I understand where you’re coming from, but the matter of “why wasn’t it translated into English that way” is a bit more complicated. For example, some people only use the KJV but there exist English words in that version whose meanings are difficult for us to understand in our modern version of English as we speak it. I can imagine that the-Greek-says-this situations might sometimes be necessary.

Sometimes I do wonder about that "pick one [secondary meaning] he likes" from a lexicon. Hear it all the time in preaching. The thinking that every word gets a strongs number and it mechanically maps to a meaning in english concerns me. I only little time studying biblical languages. Very quickly I realized this is complex and very nuanced.

"Most of the time, the preacher gives us a semantic range, picks the one he likes, and runs with it." One of, if not the most, common linguistic fallacy committed by preachers.

@@mikedawson975 I mostly study Greek to pass time as a hobby and so don’t really have any outside exposure to how this is abused. What are some examples of how these choices are ran with erroneously? Also, what are the other “linguistic fallacies” committed?

Yeah my philosophy on that is if you aren't feeling convicted/ like you have been doing wrong and this insight from the translation (Hebrew and Greek) isn't shedding light for you to see your own unrighteousness... Your probably going out of your way to make it show what you want... I do look to Hebrew and Greek for answers. Every time I find them I have something to fix about myself. I believe God used a language that would be true, that would be capable of giving messages to all who seek to know the truth, no matter what it means about them... Which means you have to be humble and actually desire the truth... But I think there's messages for individual people in the words used. If your search provides a self righteous feeling, you are likely doing it wrong. His word is useful for teaching correction, not to turn you into a self righteousing fool.

Completely to the point video. I have seen many a pastor and speaker use Biblical languages erroneously, because they only had a slight grasp of a few words and phrases. Old Greek proverb: Η ημιμάθεια χειρότερη της αμάθειας, ie Half knowledge is worse than no knowledge.

You are correct. After 4 decades, I know more Greek than I ever have, and the more I know, the more I realize I do NOT know Koine Greek. Words only have meaning in context, and learning to looks up words in a lexicon or Youngs or Vines is helpful, but as you say, dangerous. There may be 5 definitions in the lexicon, but the word only means ONE of them in THIS context. We have to be very careful. I have made the mistake many times of saying "the greek means..." and reading the lexicon, rather than doing the hard work of determining what it means HERE. Or dissecting a Greek word into its parts - as if "butterfly" had something to do with creamy butter.

Brian Simmons (the sole person who made The Passion Translation) is the perfect example of what it means to be dangerous but also careless as well as boastful. He would portray anyone who critics his work in a disparaging manner, and say when he is interviewed, "Come take my class(es) and I'll activite your understanding that I know most scholars do not know because God gave me secret understandings of original Hebrew of the New Testament." Sorry for venting but I just had to say it because I sadly have friends and family caught up in the Bethel/NAR movement. I am just frustrated because I am teaching myself Greek along with Hebrew with your guy's help.

Speaking of 'Yom', one trap to be aware of is to confuse Biblical vocabulary with words you know from other languages, like English words of Greek origin or Arabic words (I'm a native Arabic speaker) that are cognates with Hebrew words.

A lot of Christians are learning Hebrew from Jeff Benner's books. He has some pretty wild and unique ideas about Hebrew. You can see excerpts from his books on Amazon and maybe on Google Books. I think his books are kind of dangerous for people who are trying to learn Hebrew. I don't know if you ever discuss particular books like his. He has a lot of them.

In the past it seemed like pastors had biblical languages training. I mean serious in Greek or Hebrew. Now if a pastor says: "In the Greek it actually says..." He is usually wrong. More times than not, I hear this from pastors and they are misinformed.

One of the most dangerous consequences is that misguided interpretations from knowing a little about biblical languages can be extremely persuasive to those who know less, and this danger occurs at every level of mastery of the language.

When is it right, do you think, to say I KNOW a language? I'm still not sure I know English, let alone Greek 🤣 According to some around me I "speak" Zulu, and African language, but to me, I don't as I know I have so much to learn. With Greek, I read in the patristics (ish) and have had a good 6 months with Attic Greek (ish) - but honestly, do I "know" Biblical Greek? Well no, not really. Acts still baffles me, Matthew is a pain, Paul irritates me, but John makes me feel like I've got nothing to worry about! All this loops back around for me to when I learn new things about English.. which happens all the time! So when is it right to say I KNOW a language? I have no idea! 🤣 Fortunately, I know for certain I don't know Hebrew 🤣

Sometimes a big deal is made out of the deep meaning of a word when in reality that word is used simply because it rhymes or is a pun..... 40 years into Hebrew and it is still complicated, 2 years into Greek and wondering if I am ever going to be able to simply read the text.

NONE of these seminary folk tell you the BASIC TRUTH that The WILL OF THE LORD GOD is that we each have a PERSONAL Relationship with Him and that we know HIM as Our ONLY Father and Teacher - John 17, Matthew 23:8-10. The Established Principle is that The WORD of The LORD GOD is confirmed in the by two or 3 witnesses - 2Corinthians 13:1 (confirmed in Deuteronomy 17 etc.). When we OBEY The WORD of The LORD GOD (He is His SPOKEN WORD that is of The Spirit not the dead printed word - Revelation 19:13, 2Corinthians 3:6, Matthew 4:4, Deuteronomy 8:3) and go to The LORD GOD as Our ONLY TEACHER, He leads us and instructs us to HIS TOTAL BLESSING while exposing the lies of the enemy in the so called churches that reject THE INFILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT with the Evidence of praying in other Tongues (The LORD JESUS called this Reality The POWER - Luke 24:49) while NOT REJECTING the influences of PAGAN SUN GOD WORSHIP roman catholicism. We are COMMANDED to AVOID those who deny The POWER - 2Timothy 3:5 We are witnessing the CLEANSING OF THE EARTH as in the days of Noah and it is a Blessing to see, as an INTERCESSOR, many of the false evangelical pastors and teachers dropping like flies with the most recent cross dresser BAPTIST pastor exposed in Smith Station, Alabama. The man killed himself when the police pursued him.
