Hey BMAC, just wanted to take the timeout and thank you for this vid and the throttle body video you have up... my wife's 03 Turbo S alternator went out and killed the battery too... I havent done much work on it due bc well... it's a VW. But this video helped out a TONS and saved us $300 - $400 in labor costs from the dealer and local shops! You are much appreciated!
@wayneevans417911 жыл бұрын
Excellent vid - I wouldn't have even attempted this without it! Saved me $500 on getting it done at the shop. The injectors were a bit of a pain but other than that simple enough. did have a bit of a rough idle afterwards but seems to have come right. Thanks!

If anyone reads my previous comment and has the same issue check into throttle body alignment. That was my issue. Almost every thread says to use a vag-com to realign the throttle body. I was fortunate to be able to use the 'key on' method. Turn key to acc. and do not start it or touch the gas pedal. Wait 3 mins minimum (I waited 4 mins). Turn key all the way off. Turn car to on wait a few seconds and start as normal.

The description of this video says that its a VW Golf, but this is actually a New Beetle. Removal on a Golf will be similar, if not easier, due to the additional space under the hood of a Golf compared to the NB

I removed the passenger side headlight and bucket. Few hoses and no messing with the throttle body or fuel lines

I did an alternator swap on an 01 beetle turbo yesterday, I didn't have to remove tensioner or loosen injectors. That alternator will come out, just takes a little bit of persuasion :)
@geekintheshell10 жыл бұрын
Can you provide some hints of how you removed the alternator without loosening the injectors? I am doing mine tomorrow. Thanks.

I actually have to remove my AC compressor. Is it a clear shot to the compressor once the alternator is out of the way?? Great video! Very nicely done!
@b.chuchlucious54716 жыл бұрын
Can confirm, remove passenger headlight assembly to remove/install alternator. No need to remove fuel rail to do this job on a turbo bug.
@camagramps14 жыл бұрын
This will depend on your headlight assembly; mine has an inner 'can' the headlight assembly fits inside that effectively walls off access to the engine compartment. Pretty sure this will change the aim of the headlight and is more disassembly than I was willing to mess with. I did see on another video, when the headlight assembly was removed, there was no such inner shielding.

If you can't get that last part off, grind down that 1/4" bit of the panel around the opening. I did about 4" length and a little coaxing got it out. Take off the gasket first on the throttle body. I ripped mine up

BMAC VAGS hello i need help my car Golf 4 1.8T year 1998 don't want to start i have changed the new battery after 2 days the car have no battery same problem do you think is problem the alternator? I can start only with cables from another car.
@mayanalien9 жыл бұрын
The car has something taking power the whole night. If you can start it up with cables and it stays running then your alternator should be fine. Your battery was probably fine too. You have to find what is staying on.
@rexhepsaiti9 жыл бұрын
Diego Salvatierra yes i can start the car with cables or if i push the car in the gear 2 start the car and i drive but the generator must give power to battery right? you think something thief the power of battery?
@mayanalien9 жыл бұрын
Yes. That would be what I understand to be the problem. You have to find out what is stealing the power at night.

I have really rough idle after replacing alternator. I tore the throttle body gasket and tried to cheat with gasket sealer and the bug saw right through me with abnormal revs. So I replaced the gasket like a good boy hoping all is well, but it is idling so rough it makes me think the timing is off. Have you had an experience with this? Awesome video btw.

I am ordering a replacement alternator for my 2000 Beetle 1.8T and it may come without the pulley. Is it difficult to remove the pulley from the old unit and replace? I don't think fitment will be an issue as I am getting a good Bosch part. I am more interested to know if the pulley is pressed on or bolted in and if bolted can I remove it without a pneumatic wrench. Great video btw. Thanks!!!

What is the correct make and model and amperage of alternator for this car? I was planning on getting a 120amp alternator, but wasn't sure if that was overkill (I see 70 amp all the way up to 120 amp). I see different brands (Duralast, Bosch, etc.) and stuff like "For Valeo Unit" at auto parts websites. Thanks for your help! And yes, subscribed :)
@BMACVAGS3 жыл бұрын
You need to check the correct part for your particular vehicle, models will vary.

Sound I'll have look there tomorrow don't think he has any with that engine in do but I'll look round and find a 90 amp one I've heard people putting vr6 ones in think there 120 amp would that not be better?

Still got the 70 amp one in I've left that one in the old one was 90 but that is the one that melted the fuse box

Thank you so much for the video, did you remove the throttle because it was in your way of the alternator?, or are you always supposed to remove the throttle before removing the alternator? and also, do you think replacing the alternator will be similar with a 2000 VW Golf? im pretty sure it will, but im just curious if you know for sure, or have an idea thank you again! im about to watch the Throttle cleaning and Removal video, you made, after this video

You need to get the right alternator first, once you get that and the car is charging, then we can look into the airbag lights. The fact is the alternator could be causing all of your problems

wish i had seen this before i went out with mate to change alternator on octavia 1,8t 20v and he set about undoing the bolts on the alternator without releasing the tensioner? now its slightly slipped so i cant get the bolt back in place ? the other bolts are back and i saw how to relase the tension on this vid but my adjustable spanner is too big and wont go past the front of bonnet protection rail to fully lever down and put the pin in place?

Note how there is no point between the 20. It varies with each make and model that the 1.8T is installed in, but on the New Beetle, the engine cover reads 20V Turbo.
