What does a leader in building supplies and services do when faced with a challenge? Well, if you're BMC, you build a solution. It's no secret that in our industry it's becoming harder and harder to staff manufacturing sites due to the lack of labor. So to deal with a shortage of muscle at our truss plants, BMC innovated the entire truss manufacturing process in our new high-tech plant in Cumming, Georgia. To understand how BMC is leading the way let's rewind.
Okay. Not that far! Here you see today's traditional truss plant. Material handling and cutting is a paper driven process and takes a large team of people.
The assembly process requires a crew leader for the team and manual pucks lay out the truss build in a 30 minute setup. While lumber is manually picked up for each truss.
Now let's see how BMC is transforming the industry. To get here, we partnered with MiTek: a global leader in software and manufacturing equipment to co-develop innovative technology. The result is this new, highly automated truss plant. The first of its kind with this capability and the most advanced safety features in the country. Automated material handling and cutting? Boom! And a one-person paperless process.
And for assembly, the team is self-led using three digital screens to manage plans - high-tech and high-efficiency. An auto box system delivers a ten second setup and webbing is pre-sorted in containers. Up to date and up to speed - we've increase production with a third less labor than a traditional truss line and we're training new hires in a third less time, thanks to this new automated system.
All of this means BMC is at the forefront of truss manufacturing. But what does that mean as far as our customers are concerned? Quality, consistent, steady output. BMC is continuously improving so that we can deliver what our customers need when they need it.

A linear saw and automated pucks is the future? Ok.... teaching people in 1/3 of the time? We are making them technology dependent that’s all. Nice set up though.
