As a biomedical engineering senior student, we take a course in which we find a medical problem and come up with a solution during the course of two semesters. My team and I have been working on this project for the past 8 months, and it is very exciting to finally have a physical working prototype of our project.
At Zinnia Medical, we saw that there is a limitation on how often expectant mothers are able to check on their baby's health since they rely on hospital equipment like ultrasound machines. Doctor visits are limited to once a month at the early stages of pregnancy, to once a week at the later stages. Meanwhile, mother purely rely on perception of their baby's movement for months as indication of health status.
This is why we have developed an ambulatory fetal monitoring system that will be worn continuously and track fetal heart rate and contractions. After discussing with several OBGYN's, we determined that these were parameters that indicated the health status of a baby.
Hope you enjoy this insight into the culminating class of the biomedical engineering program. Let me know if you have any questions about our project.
Stay tuned for more videos on biomedical engineering, what life is as a college student, videos on bme companies, industry insights, hear experiences from students as well as professionals, and more.

Hi Meri! Really cool project! As a current BME student, I would really like to try assembling a similar project. Would it be possible if I can have your code for reference? That would mean a lot. Thank you :)

Hey Brandon, thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately I lost the code after the course was completed. But I know we based our code off another KZbin video for an ECG monitor.

Is there any sensor used to find the contractions? / How do you find it here?
@TheBMELife
@TheBMELife Жыл бұрын
Our concept was that contractions were detected my measuring heart rate. If I remember correctly, there was a specific event of heart rate (e.g., heart rate rapidly increases during contractions). We did look into getting some sort of electromechanical sensor, but we ended up just making it based on heart rate.

Hi does the AD8232 measure the contractions or there is another component. Help...
@TheBMELife
@TheBMELife 9 ай бұрын
Hey, our theory for this project was that we measured contractions based on heart rate. We interviewed an OBGYN who said heart rate would substantially accelerate/spike up during a contraction and then go down. So we were really just flagging the event based on heart rate.

@@TheBMELife Thanks for the assistance! I also wanted to ask on how it receives the signals. For the electrodes, are they placed on the belly or on the waist behind the casing as on the prototype. Which position was/is the best?
@TheBMELife
@TheBMELife 9 ай бұрын
In our case this was all theory, so we didn't get to extract signals from an actual fetus inside the womb. We only used normal chest electrodes for an individual's heart. Sorry can't really help with that! But I do recall there were several publicly available patents online. You might be able to find one with more information on that.

Hello once again how do we know that the heart rate sensor is now measuring the fetus and not a mother Can you please help me the difference
@TheBMELife
@TheBMELife 2 жыл бұрын
we were not able to achieve this in our project, but you'd have to filter out the mother's heart rate somehow.
