BMPCC - Post-Production Workflow - Adobe Premiere: 6K Pro

Here's a look at my post-production workflow with Blackmagic Raw files in Adobe premiere pro. This is by no means an extensive walkthrough but will give you the basics to editing BRAW on your own for footage from BMPCC 4K, 6K and 6K Pro. All the gear I use in the video is linked below!

I think Contrast prob after Render is not by premiere pro, try to preview your rendered video on different player like VLC or else ..I have faced same problem then I try VLC to preview and it's same as premier pro window

No difference for most files with the exception of Red raw files. For some reason they won’t appear as clips when you drag and drop, but for most commonly used formats you can do either method and it’s the same!

What version of Premiere and MacOS are you running? When I edit BRAW in Premiere v14.2 and adjust the BRAW settings I have bugs come up where my raw adjustments only apply to where the play head is at and forward in the timeline on that clip but not before. It looks like it runs smooth on your system which is why I'm curious. Otherwise, BRAW adjustments are fluid in Resolve for me but I'm faster and more familiar with Premieres workflow so I want to figure out why I'm having issues. Any suggestions or insight would be appreciated!

So sorry I should have thought to put that info into the video! I'm running Catalina version 10.15.7 and Premiere version 14.5. That sounds really odd that it's only affecting footage at the playhead. Have you updated the BRAW plugin from blackmagic recently? I have been running into some issues with Premiere with the Raw footage, like when I save and quit Premiere then reopen, sometimes all my BRAW settings are locked and I have no way of changing them. I've also just been having general issues with Premiere which really makes me want to switch over to Resolve but I'm in the same boat, I'm definitely more familiar and faster with Premiere than Resolve. Something else you could try is reverting to an older version of Premiere!

@@jordanvp Thanks for your insight! I'll have to try some updates and trouble shoot some more. It's good to know that there's other problems you've had some issues with when editing Raw in Premiere to be aware of. Hopefully Adobe has some updates to fix these problems soon, but in the meantime I guess I'm going to try and get comfortable in Resolve when shooting Raw.

Is there a trick to viewing the 6kRaw clips in a log aesthetic? We received footage shot on BMPCC and the color appears baked in. I can changed the source settings as you show, but the footage overall doesn't feel Flat. Is there a conversion lut that I need?

Within the raw controls where you can change those source settings, close to the top of that window should be a drop down menu where you’re able to change from “video” or “extended video” to the Log film look!

Did you use proxy? I just bought my 6k cam black magic, n playback with 6k footage is lagging. Any suggestions? How did you have such a smooth play back here on this video.

I don’t use proxies, I typically just change the playback quality to one half or one quarter. I do also make sure that the external drive that I buy has fast enough read/write speeds otherwise you’ll encounter lots of lag.

Tbh I don’t know which would be particularly good for BRAW but I do know that it runs well on my Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB and running on my intel i7 8 core with 72GB.

You can add a LUT 'QT Gamma Compensation.cube' to your footage on export which will give you the same colours as what you see in the edit. It also drove me mad for ages as well until I found a solution online!!!

It's insain that adobe wont fix this and they are the ones that 'advise' the workaround. So annoying. Even how it shows up as NONE when you select the gamma lut.

Yeah I agree, this is one of the many reasons I dumped Adobe and switched to Davinci and I know at least a half dozen editors personally who have done the same. Adobe needs to wake up.

It should act like a standard external drive that mounts and you can then drag and drop the files or you could also edit directly from the t5 if you like!

Something I’ve noticed with the most recent release of premiere, as soon as I color my footage it instantly slows down my GPU, no matter where I’m scrubbing the sequence, even viewing clips with no coloring at all 🤦🏻‍♂️

What are the specs on the Mac desktop you are using? I’m trying to edit bmpcc footage on my MacBook Pro 16gb and it’s not as smooth as your workflow?

I have the 8-core version with 72GB RAM and I also got the upgraded video card that has 16GB RAM, I knew I would need a lot of power for that BRAW footage as well as editing the occasional Red footage or heavy motion graphics.

You’ll need the BRAW plugin from the blackmagic website to view them, but you can just drag and drop the files into premiere.

Hi Jordan. I'm using a 1TB Wise SSD to shoot and then connecting this to my laptop. (Omen with Nvidia corei5) Can I attach the G drive to my laptop? This may be my main issue. In the Black magic provided free version of Da Vinci I create transcodes so I can use in Premiere. Edit in Premiere then send back to Resolve to color grade. Then in deliverables export prores 422. I send to Vimeo for viewing. Its not the quality I am aiming for. Are you editing in premiere without creating transcodes? I couldnt do that. I need to shrink down. Are you using the free version of Da Vinci thats given with the purchase? Thanks I realize this is an old post I hope you see it.

Hello! Yes I am editing directly in premiere but I do reduce playback quality to half or 1/4th while editing and both my iMac and my laptop are able to edit. Do you know what read and write speed your ssd is? That would be the first thing to check and if it’s not quite fast enough you could get the G-drive and transfer footage and edit from that one. I would also check to make sure you’ve downloaded the latest Blackmagic raw plugin for premiere. If those two don’t seem to fix anything, you may want to just shoot prores in camera to save time and quality. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

Tbh I haven’t actually tried proxies with the BRAW footage...I don’t know if the raw settings would be available with proxies...you can definitely just do your editing and do coloring last, that’s a good question, I’ll try to cover that in another video!

Are you importing from within premiere or doing drag and drop? You may want to check your version of Blackmagic Raw for premiere. I have run into an issue a few times where it seems like the BRAW file is corrupt and it will force premiere to freeze up. I just restart my computer and try it again and sometimes that works, sometimes not.

Oh no! My only other idea would be try dropping those files into media encoder and change the format. It sucks to lose the raw capability but it would be worse to loose the footage altogether! Hopefully that works!

I have spent a short amount of time playing with resolve but not enough to be proficient yet so I’ve got to stick with premiere until I have the time. I would definitely like to make the switch, especially since Adobe subscription is just so expensive.
