The new BMW 1 series sparks a major change for the German brand. Front wheel drive, 3 cylinder engined, it will have BMW fans outraged! For the typical 1 series customer though, it is going to be a serious step up in so many ways and in this video, I'll explain why.

Am a Merc person and traditionally a BMW hater, but this vehicle changed my mind! All new same category cars seem they stepped bck in build quality (interior at list) except BMW. Audi - VW - MERC new models reduced or vanished physical buttons and interior surfaces are full of glossy piano black plastic..., BMW is the only one in opposite direction! I think new BMW series 1 have the most balanced package and made me loving it!!!

I totally agree. VW group cars have dropped the ballon quality after being leaders for years. The Merc cabin is smart but not as robust.

I went so see bmw 1s Audi A3 and golf 8,very disappointed in the interior of the last 2 are not looking premium car ,the bmw inside its great I felt the quality and the storm bay gray it’s amazing!

Same here I’ve had the A45 2017, then the A250 2020 and now decided to get a 2022 135i and it’s definitely my favourite. The A45 was such a beast and I miss it but it’s too old for me and I hate the new A Class. I also hate Audis although the RS3 is a machine

Great in depth review! I've got the m135i and came from the f20 m135i and 9 months in, loving it. My brother in law has the 118i in this storm bay grey, looks awesome. Quick note, the parcel shelf fits under the boot floor which is really useful sometimes and the bmw assistant (voice control default is set as "hey bmw" but when you pressed the activation button and said "hello bmw" it renamed itself to that, as you can all it anything. I've changed mine to "Alexa" only as eveyone is used to that at home, sorry bmw). You don't need that button pressing on the steering wheel then, you just say the activation word you set and then the command you want such as "Hey BMW, I'm cold" or "I'm stressed" or "bbc radio 1" or "navigate me to etc...". Instead, just can just press that voice button on steering wheel you pressed then say the command as above instead. To get average fuel info, it's the top button of the 2 on the indicator stalk which cycles g meter, spotify track artwork, power/torque disls and average fuel consumption. Took me a while to work that out lol. Enjoyed your review, thank you 👍

Looks like a big improvement over the old shape. Never mind the badge, BMWs are so much better to drive than a VW regardless of which wheels are driven. As you suggest, I’d avoid the large boy racer black wheels though unless I was buying the M135i.

I had a good look at one of these while my bike was being serviced at the BMW dealer. The interior is shockingly good compared to the rest of the class. Genuinely surprised at how fancy it is inside.

Coming from a Volvo V40, this BMW-1 is really fast in terms of gear shift. Most of the time I didn't notice I was going fast in second or third gear. Interiorwise, the plastic isn't quite up the standards of a V40, but this has modern features. The app is lacking though, no location/fuel/mileage log. Despite the corona, they did manage to deliver mine within 2½ months.

I wish I had gone for the rear armrest and perhaps the glass roof too. I am so glad I have the rear view camera though. So useful where I live. I was sold on the dashboard after driving the new 3 series around Ireland...

@@mrwilliamhope I went for the MSport Plus, tech pack 2, through loading, and parking assist (that gives you the rear camera and the fancy automated parking gizmo!). I went on Carwow to get the best price and then rocked up to my local dealer, who matched the cheapest dealer!

Greetings from Scotland. Wonderful review. I took delivery of a 118i series auto just before the lockdown here. I didn't go for the M sport trim but I did go for 17" wheels and full digital dashboard.

Drove a late 2020 manual 118i m sport today. Opinions: + well refined, nice ride, very nice quality interior, nice handling -heavy clutch with low bite - hard to set off smoothly, quite heavy steering, gearbox is a bit “springy”/could be nicer to use. Felt a bit slower/more boring than I expected. 7/10 from me.

Xdrive eliminates any torque steer. Go for a nearly new 120d (xdrive) instead of a new 118i.

I tell you what-I want change my old golf mk5 from 2006 to THIS!. I though about golf, but potentially have a lot of software issues. Yesterday I spoke with BMW dealer (UK) and I been inside 118i M sport...i have no words. Quality, strength, generally design just big WOOW! Seriously. I'm just worry about automatic, but this is my decision. One think I recognised in all videos even cars from this lvl still have door lock pins! I'm surprised. In my old golf they wasn't exist already. Well, don't worry about pins. Good video and nice to see again this car. Ah two questions-indicators are dynamic or standard flashing? Side mirrors folding when you lock car or not? All the best in 2024, Tom.

You can spec a spare wheel in UK models.The firm ride on country roads puts me off a little, was thinking of M sport with 18 inch wheels but a lot of my driving is on small country roads so may have to go a lower trim for a softer ride.

We’ve just purchased one of these in Storm Bay grey….118i, it’s a stunning looking car & I think the interior is the best in its class too. Also, our car has the M Sport Kit, rear spoiler, 19in upgrades & full heated leather & the black grill. The dealer said it’s like the Shadow Edition of the previous model, which is what we previously owned. Great review, keep up the good work👍

First thing to do when you buy a BMW 1 series is to change the run flat with normal tyres. It makes the difference!

The BMW badge is sometimes considered better than VW, that is why VW upgrade their vehicles and call them an Audi and if thats not a good enough badge then they will upgrade them some more and call them a Porsche or a Lamborghini Uris. I am typical of most drivers of high performance cars, in that I have no skill what so ever and generally find front wheel drive much more forgiving than when my limited abilities are inadequate in a powerful rear wheel drive and I wipe out my entire family.

@@NobbyOnCars Hello, thank you for this review. I am considering buying exactly this car with a manual gear box. Most of my trips will be in the type of UK roads you drove and tested this car. Would a M-sport suspension with 18" wheels be comfortable enough to drive trips in the British country roads or would you advice to go for the 1 series Sport trim higher suspension with 17" inches? I drove tested the M-Sport with 18" wheels and I found it managing surprisingly well the bumps and potholes in town, but not sure how it would be in long trip in the countryside. Would you also would like to suggest me another equivalent cars to the 118i (I am interested only in manual) that I should also drive test before deciding for the 118i? The statement that the new series 1 is "more BMW" than the old one is disturbing. The old 1 was technically and visually a baby version of the 3 series car, the archetype of the BMW philosophy. The new Series 1 has nothing to do with the 3 series anymore except the similar interior design.

Well, I’ve personally owned about 15 BMWs and it’s my opinion. I cover the lack of RWD but when you’re plonked behind the wheel, the occasion of all that surrounds you feels more premium than the last. That’s all 99% of 1 Series owners care about. A heritage BMW fan/owner probably wouldn’t go near a 1 typically anyway.

I have the old BMW series 1 and would take the Mazda 3 too. Excellent design. I saw the new series 1 several times on the street, the front and shape reminds me painfully of the Active Tourer.
