This is an acceleration video with a chip tuned BMW 116i F20 with the BMW N13 engine, which is also used in the BMW 114i and BMW 118i. This car is tuned by BR Performance, the car now produces 219 hp and 300 nm (measured on a dyno) on RON 95 or EURO 95 petrol.

The 0-100 is not that fast because of the soft launch to save the clutch. I think a 0 - 100 km/h time under 7 seconds is possible with this car. The 100-200 is comparable to a Volkswagen Golf GTI.
This engine is also used in the BMW F30 316i and 320i Efficient Dynamics.

Normal oil temperature depends upon the type of fuel used in the vehicle. For gasoline vehicles, this varies from around 230 to 260F (110-126.6°C). However, it is slightly lower for diesel-powered engines, at around 200-230F (93-110°C). 137 for n13 is normal

Thats why the 200 HP version comes with a stock Oilcooler mounted to the engine. Guess you will have to replace your cooling setup, or rebuild the engine after you wasted the pistons and basically everything besides transmission. Teenagertuning.

A lot of stock cars run oil temps of 140 degrees Celsius when raced on the track on a hot day, a high oil temperature does not equal engine damage (however it is obviously not beneficial for performance or engine life). This engine is still working fine, with no signs of extra wear. That said, if you drive this car hard on the autobahn every day; I would definitely upgrade the cooling setup (oil cooler and intercooler) and also fit a upgraded downpipe (118i has a bigger downpipe).

The 114i, 116i and 118i share the same engine (pre-facelift). The 118i with 170 hp has a bigger downpipe and an oil cooler, which both the 114i and 116i do not have. If you do not live a warm climate and do not drive faster than 180 km/h on a regular basis, an upgraded downpipe and oil cooler isn't necessary in my opinion.

A good oil can handle that temp but pistons o rings are getting wear faster and problems begin...there is not the oil cooler that makes the difference but cooling map is defferent too..if you check 116i with oil cooler has a bit less temp nothe same as a118i ....so its not the same 116i with cooler and a 118i...all this excess temp make the solinoids to wear faster the high casket die earlier so the first shine is oil in spark plugs and oil leak on turbine and other parts like oil plug on the top of the motor..all this high temps makes cooling system to work harder..the first shine is a broken water pulley and solinoid leak on turbo..and excesive loss of water cooling...bigger tempreture makes zf8 die earlier too because it has the same oil water cooling system as the turbine same circle.

Hi, I chiptuned my 116i in 2019 (went from 109hp to 179hp) and at the end of 2020 my engine blew up. 1 piston had split in half and therefore my dealer had to do a complete engine revision. It cost me a thousands of euros. I read your comment and it sounded familiar because my dealer's mechanic said the piston broke because of burned oil. However I always changed oil in time. So you think this kind of remap caused the oil to burn faster and important parts to wear faster ending eventualy in my blown up engine?

But I want to take action and prevent the over heating in the future... I think the remap caused higher oil temps and therefore maybe the other problems...

Sure,i own one,it's the same engine,i have only stage 1.219hp,305Nm it's enough for me.Stage 2 is about 240hp wagner IC,downpipe,but the costs(about 1500-1800 euro) it's not worth in my opinion,here in Belgium you have to change the downpipe every year due the emission norms(if you have a stage 2)..kind regards

Hallo! Ik heb een vraagje... Heb in 2019 mijn 116i laten tunen bij BRP België en hij is toen van 109 naar 179pk gegaan. Eind 2020 motor in de soep gedraaid. Verdict: piston gescheurd en ze dachten dat dit te wijten was aan verbrande olie. Na dit filmpje te hebben gezien en de reacties te hebben gelezen, vermoed ik dat het dus toch verband houdt met de chiptuning. Motor volledig moeten laten reviseren en software werd teruggezet naar fabrieksinstellingen. Nu mis ik het vermogen enorm, dus heb volgende week een afspraak om opnieuw te laten chiptunen bij brp. Dit keer wil ik wel voorzichtiger te werk gaan, dus ben ik op zoek naar nuttige aanbeveling betreft type olie of eventueel upgrades in onderdelen om de levensduur van mijn motorblok nu wel te vrijwaren. Ik las al iets over een oliekoeler? Heb je nog andere aanbevelingen waar je van denkt dat ik mee rekening dien te houden? Alvast bedankt voor de reply!

Thank you for your detailed story! I did not have a problem with the car in the video for 2 years and 30.000km, and I sold it without problems. The engine in this car (the N13) is different though compared to the engine in your car (the B38). With tuned cars I think it is very important to warm up the car before using the extra power (stay below 2500-3000rpm with low throttle the first 20 minutes), wait until the oil (which is not the coolant) is at least 90 degrees Celsius before using any power. Shorten the oil interval to 15.000 km’s instead of the 30.000. Also, only use RON 98 or higher fuels.

This is a manual. If you have an automatic 1 series, you will have the ZF 8HP45 gearbox. This gearbox has a torque limit of around 450 nm, so it will easily handle the amount of torque this engine produces (only 300 - 330 nm).

if you buy the older f20 with 4 cilynders sure but the newer ones with 3 cil and the new tail lights a tuner told me that the clutch silps at more then 170 hp with manual 190-200 should be fine he said :D

The auto is actually a lot stronger than the manual, it's a ZF8HP45 which is rated for 450nm

Planuje zrobić chip na ok. 190 KM, bo więcej się boję, że silnik, sprzęgło, dwumasa będzie za dużo wysilone i długo nie wytrzyma. Jaki przebieg ma to auto i ile jest przejechane na tym programie?

This car covered about 15 000 km / 1 year with this chip without any problems (no oil consumption or mechanical failures for example), mileage on the car is around 50 000km. Overall impression is that the car takes the power very well; no drivetrain shocks for example. If you want to tune your car extra safe or drive a lot on the German autobahn, I would recommend a downpipe and intercooler upgrade to keep the temps down. This car is rarely driven above 180 km/h so normally oil temperature never exceeds the standard 120 degrees Celsius with this tune.

The disadvantage of chiptuning is that you have to be more careful with the car in comparison with a standard car, warm up the car (+- 20 min or km) before using a lot of power and let it cool down before switching it off (to cool the turbo). With doing this I never had mechanical trouble with tuned cars, but of course mechanical parts (brakes, clutch, etc.) will wear faster if you use the power a lot.

This car is equipped with a manual gearbox. If you launch the car aggressively 0 - 100 km/h will take around 6 seconds. With an automatic gearbox the car will do 0 - 100 km/h faster than in this video.

Some facelift models are equipped with the 'old' N13 4 cylinder (as 118i with 136hp or a 120i with 177 hp), they are hard to find however. I would save up extra for the newer B48 4 cylinder in the facelift models though.

Der 116i hat in den Papieren 136 PS angegeben, kann aber nach oben bisschen abweichen (kann so um die 150 PS sein). Habe auch einen 116i F20. Übrigens rate ich nicht wirklich so ein Chiptuning zu machen 😅 Dieser Spaß hält bestimmt nicht lange an.. Wenn dann VIELLEICHT mit einem tadellosen, einwandfreien, top Motor 🤷‍♂️. Ach und unter 500 Euro findest du keine Stage 1 Tuning dem du erst recht trauen solltest. Lohnt sich alles nicht um auf einem Motorschaden liegen zu bleiben.

Hello, a few weeks ago i remapped my F20 with Br - performance too, everything was going nice until my radiator started to leak, and lost alot of power, my question is if that is the reason why i lost power or there could be another important reason? Its completely stock

A radiator leak sounds like an issue which is not related to tuning. I would replace the radiator and see if the tuning still gives problems. I think this ECU remap is pretty reliable, I guess more than 500 to 1000 cars run this tune without problems.

Let me explain, the 114i, 116i, 118i an 120i are the same engines the n13 engine wich is a 1.6l twin turbo. In the 114 the ecu/engine is dialed down so it's pretty easy for a tuner to unleash all those held back horses and even put a little extra with. This is a stage one which as you seen get you around 220hp, some a bit more some a bit less, stage 2 (over here in Belgium) is 240 to 245hp, this includes a full exhaust and normaly downpipe and bigger intercooler. I know places where they tune this 1.6 engine to 300 a 310hp with bigger turbo's on it.

Le 114i, 116i et 118i ont le même moteur. Ils ont juste une bride électronique pour pouvoir avoir du coup différente version. Les 3 montent à 220cv en stage 1

Well the b38(1, 5L) engine will produce about 170 horsepower and 270-280nm after a stage 1 remap. Estimating top speed is a bit tricky, but i would guess it would be around 220kmh ish.

For a stage 2 remap I would change the intercooler (around 800 euros), downpipe (around 1000 euros) and fit an oil cooler (around 400 euros). These prices exclude labour to fit the parts and also software (around +-600 euros).

the clutch is exactly the same of 125i.check on realoem.The limit is on the gearbox that cannot exceed 350 Nm. Said by more experienced people on forums.

Nicht schlecht für einen 116i, aber wenn man überlegt, dass mein Serienmäßiger 184 PS 120i ca 0,5 Sekunden schneller auf 100 fährt mit 35 PS weniger... Ich weiß nicht, was BMW da gemacht hat, aber dieses Getriebe schaltet so unglaublich schlecht und langsam, das kann man sich ja gar nicht anschauen... Alleine durch das Getriebe wird soviel verloren, weil es unglaublich ineffizient arbeitet
