One note I should mention is to loosen the back bolt first. That way not all the pressure is spread to it if you remove the easy one at the bottom of the starter.

2010 E92 335i here. I wasn't so lucky; those guys at the factory torqued my bolts super duper hard. I got the lower right one out with E12 socket using brute force (just like in this video), but the back bolt I wish I had done differently. use a 3/8 curved wrench with breaker bar since the bolt is an E12 head (smaller than the E14 bolt you will use to replace it). do not use 10mm wrench because if it's torqued super hard and seized in there you will strip the head. you got one shot at this, if you strip the head you will need to cut the head off or break the starter housing near the bolt. I ended up cutting the head off with dremel flex attachment and carbide burr bits (was not fun). I did all of this without removing the manifold fully (I just removed the hose and intake; the cable clipped on in the back of the manifold I removed after the manifold was off).

THANK YOU for this. Seriously - I had my starter go down on my last week - I found your vid and you gave GOOD directions. Not 100% how I did it...but I had lighting issues and had some connector problems as well (little bastards don't always want to come off easily - so I removed my throttle body instead of keeping it on the intake manifold). But for the most part - your vid was VERY helpful!

My starter's last start was right before I drove 3h away. Wish I could have known. Anyway here I am in my mom's driveway tearing into this thing. I found that if you use a breaker bar you can pull up on an E-torx socket from behind the rear turbo intake pipe. It's important that it's a bar, 12-15" long, because they afford you a few degrees under 90 socket to handle. That was the only way I could do the job, because although I could buy e-torx sockets at the parts shop, no luck with any wrenches! Anyway, any recommendations where to get some of those wrenches? All I find online are these Gearwrench brand with bad reviews.

i have a huge problem (i guess) i got a bmw 335i n54 2007 automatic gear box And 1 week ago i had fuel issue, because i did a modification on my fuel tank pump, on the climbing road (fuel pump sucking more air instead of gasoline) That night i insisted even so running my engine like 10 times, i insisted with the starter till it stopped(my fault) Trying to run the engine i could hear a noise like ''dling''or'' tling'' coming from the engine compartment (that moment starter won't kick anymore) i replaced the starter by a new complete one and also replaced the battery by a new one i still hear the ''tling or dling'' and engine still won't start What could it be?

@nOshi2x3 жыл бұрын
If up top is not working out, use some extensions and a wobble socket to get at the bolt from under the car going up through the driver side of the transmission. In either case top or bottom make sure the socket is secure on the bolt and carefully about stripping the bolt.

can’t figure out a way to reach in to the long back starter bolt. regular ratcheting wrench stripped the bolt. i have the etorx but can’t fit a ratchet or anything in there. ideas?
@nOshi2x4 жыл бұрын
Since you have the etorx. Your best bet would be to use some extensions and a wobble on it from under the car. So jack the car up and put it on jack stand and from between the driver side of the transmission feed the extension up and have someone up top guide it onto the bolt. You will then be able to loosen it.

If I recall right you just have to pull it towards the engine to get it off the 2 prongs on the manifold. When it’s stubborn I usually walk away and come back and give it one good yank and it comes off.

That sounds like a charge pipe leak, not enough boost. Old gaskets leaking or something not tightened. That sucks. :-(
@nOshi2x3 жыл бұрын
Yea definitely sounds like a boost leak of sorts, just have to go over everything again. It’s usually the vacuum line that goes into the throttle body that gets forgotten, but upon start up it will generally set off a code. Easiest way to know is to scan the car with a bmw specific scanner and it will put you on the path to check for a boost | vacuum leak or possibly a misfire.

Thanks friend for doing this video. I'm thinking about buying a 335i or xi and before I do I wanted to know how difficult it is to replace the starter, water pump, and power steering pump. If I can't maintain it myself then I won't buy one. Thanks again.
@nOshi2x4 жыл бұрын
No prob hope it was off some help. I would lean more to the 335i, the xi can lengthen maintenance times by a lot for anything that needs to be accessed underneath the car, such as the oil pan gasket or even replacing the turbos. The starter, water pump, and power steering pump on a scale of 1 to 5, is lump them around a 3. I would definitely recommend you have extensions and a wobble socket, since most of these jobs are straightforward but the bolts are in odd angles and orientation. Such as one of the starter bolts in this video. All in all the biggest job you would have to do to fix leaks etc, would be the oil pan gasket and just for that I’d recommend going with a 335i. If your doing the work yourself it’s a whole lot less headaches.

When you open that fucking star-headed bolt in the back. Put it back in with the opposite side so next time it’a easier to remove.
@neinscheisse95355 жыл бұрын
may not want to disconnect the battery though cuz then you would have to do a reset with a special scan tool, not a code reader, otherwise your battery will die over night and most likely take out your footwell module which controls the lights and turn signals etc. i would recommend disconnecting the cable at the jump start terminal that way it no power to starter but still to the rest of the system. had my module go out like that and apparently it's very common with dead batteries or disconnects. thanks for the vid though.
