Just did this on my 2010 335d & WOW was that a job. I purchased the car knowing that I would have to replace it & thought it wouldn't be that involved. Boy was I wrong. Not hard just very involved with many other parts of the motor. Anyhow it's in & I have put 3500 miles on it & holding like new. So glad I did it myself because giving the valve train an inspection while in their was an added bonus...

Thanks for the great DIY. This was the first big DIY I ever did. OMG! It took me a 1-1/2 days then I broke the vent hose and had to wait till the next day for the BMW dealer to open so I could overpay for a replacement lol. But to qualify this, all I ever did before was change a few tail light bulbs, air filters, and wiper blades. Lots of things were stuck, lots of things to figure out when it’s your first big DIY. So this was definitely jumping into the deep end for me. It definitely helps to have a friend help you. There is a lot of stuff going on with trying to get the cover off and back on, making sure wires are clear, etc. I watched this video - and some others - over and over to get an idea of what tools I needed. Then went out and bought the tools. The next thing I did month later was the LUX Angel Eyes upgrade when a bulb went out - I watched Justin Buice’s DY for that. Definitely a learning experience and very glad I did it. Appreciate all I learn on your channel. 2007 BMW 335xi Black Sapphire Metallic. 93K miles. Original owner. Black Apex SM10 8.5 x 18 wheels. I bent 3 VMR V710s in a year. Not buying VMR ever again.

Mate, great diy! Took a while but your instructions were clear as day. Little things are a different due to rhd and lhd placement differences but nothing major. The only issue was needing to buy an extra deep well socket for the 3 valve cover bolts. A deep one wouldn't latch on. Thanks, you're a legend!

I didn't have a long enough socket for the valve cover studs in the center. I drilled the center of my 10mm deep well with a 5/16 drill bit. It worked. Couldn't put the extension into the socket fully, but it went in far enough to use the extension.

Hi Lee, I really enjoyed watching your video, very descriptive, easy to follow. I have a 2009 335i x drive. I have all kinds of leaks and trying to fix it my self. Dealer is asking lot of money for it. I have leaks from the Oil filter gasket and cooler gasket, also leak from the engine head coolant hose. Would you recommend fixing those before I change the valve cover gasket? Do you have DYI video on how to change oil filter gasket and cooler gasket? I greatly appreciate your response. I am trying to save some money. Thank you.
@heliosdawnsong
@heliosdawnsong 4 жыл бұрын
Head coolant hose will break suddenly leaving you stranded... The end in the head is plastic (like everything BMW) and it crumbles (ask me how I know). As this is the point where coolant is at its highest temp, it is the most fragile coolant connection. You can buy an aluminum hose barb for $20 from FCPEuro or eBay and replace the plastic piece. (be forewarned if it's crumbling, chunks of plastic are already in your waterpump and/or thermostat--another expensive repair.) replacing the barb will prevent future fuckery though. www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-aluminum-coolant-hose-flange-rein-chc0609?ads_cmpid=1586640911&ads_adid=59893888775&ads_matchtype=&ads_network=g&ads_creative=298302526031&ads_targetid=pla-317976287412&ttv=2&gclid=CjwKCAjw5vz2BRAtEiwAbcVILwTyuDoACo0a2fDEwo1wRmwUz0D1AbbAgdhbWi7xmvnCa1DAt1lgEhoCzMYQAvD_BwE Also, oil leaks (which can be ereywhar on BMW) especially oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket, can leak oil onto serpentine belt, causing it to slip, which causes it to shred, which may then whip into front mail seal, possibly destroying the engine. There is a front main seal guard you can buy to prevent the damage, but not the leaking onto the belt (I may devise such). These are great cars that didn't finish R&D. Bean counters have destroyed sporty car longevity through plastic parts, snap fit time saving construction , and smaller parts that are only sold as part of a much more expensive, larger assembly. If BMW used metal in the cooling system (they do on some engines omg), cared slightly less about beating competition on purchase price, and designed for enthusiasts (no special tools, smaller parts available, etc.) with efficient repairability and common sense engineering-- literally everyone would buy and drive the ultimate driving machine. Sales would go up, folx would be happier, spend less on service, and promote the brand to every friend. Japanese common sense and pride in proper craftsmanship are several levels higher, alas they have no autobahn and a younger culture of motoring etc., so the driving experience isn't quite the same. The collaboration between Toyota and BMW is a step in the right direction, but didn't quite get us there. Germans need to stop making electronics, they suck at it, whereas Japanese electronics have always been top notch. If they focused on design, driving dynamics, and concept and left parts execution, quality control, and manufacturing to Japanese, Elon would go broke, 😂

I''m looking at getting the tools I need for this job and the link to the digital torque wrenches shows that thee wrenches have a range of 30-340NM yet most torque specs listed for this job are less than 30NM? Great diy, dealership told me that my vcg was lightly sweating oil about two years ago, but wasn't enough for me to justify the repair. Now I finally saw a drop of oil on the driveway, so need to replace it.Question : the torque wrench on amazon as per your link is for 30-340 nm, how we're you able to set it to 8,5nm? I'm having a hard time finding a torque wrench with such a light torque spec. Thanks!

Great video bro. Love the fact you named each tool in the bottom left corner. I will have to watch the video over a few times before I will work on my e92. Speaking of my e92, are the steps about the same as yours?

I'm going to be doing this job next weekend. Also, a bit off topic, but how hard is it exactly, to do a transmission fluid and filter change. Shop quoted me 1800 dollars. I about fainted. I figured it would be expensive, but damn. My car now has 141,000 miles, and I have no idea if the transmission fluid has been changed at all. I am assuming it hasn't. I bought the vehicle at 129,000.

After watching this I now realize I prolly need to take my n55 to a mechanic. This is a bit much. Coils and Plugs were easy enough. This on the other hand is a headache. Why did you stop running the cowl deletes?

Is this a similar process for the n55. Smoke seems to be coming through my vent on my F15

A local shop told me that the bolts for the valve cover are single time use and should be replaced when dismantled. Is anyone able to confirm the validity of this?

Great video; however, there's another gasket you don't talk about... the inner oil filler cap gasket. Of course, I have a 2000 528i and this could be different on this vehicle, but I was directed to this video which doesn't cover how it is placed (I remembered if fell out when I took my valve cover off, but I didn't replace it and have a continuous check engine light even after smoking the engine to find leaks.

Is this also applicable to the 328i? I’ve taken everything apart to get the plugs out and found oil in the cylinders and on the plugs and coils.

I did not, figured since pcv was new, there was no point. Now I have an upgraded spare.
