The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is basically a mashup of the 3 Series sedan, 3 Series Touring wagon and the 4 Series coupe. Don’t overthink it, though, because in the real world, the fastback form factor works really well. It’s slick like a sedan but allows you to load stuff into the boot - and fit child seats - far more easily than with a conventional four-door.
You can spec the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe with three petrol engines and two electric powertrains here in Australia. The electric version is called the i4.
Key rivals to the 4GC are the Audi A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback, plus the Kia Stinger.

Appreciate the review giving a local road perspective. A couple of questions: Where would you rate the BMW overall versus the Audi S5 Sportback, and particularly for rear seat space and ride comfort? Similarly you rate the RS5 quite highly in a recent review, which would you choose of the three?

Compared to the m340, s5 sportback, or the s4, I thought the m440xdrive was best to drive. The adaptive suspension is a must-have and currently, in the states, the M340 can't be ordered with the park assist package (topview or 360 camera). I thought the s5 was more tamed to drive and the tech was a bit finicky. Android auto/apple car play doesn't display in the HUD or cockpit screen as the BMW does.

Lots of mechanical grip from the chassis, lots of chemical grip from the P Zeroes and lots of traction from xDrive… though we’d also strongly consider a 430i with RWD for more pure steering

I’ve seen a few 4 series coupes on the road now and thought it looked quite good after not liking the design on paper. Sounds like a great car. Big fan of the lift back. I’ve always liked the idea of a 3 series but the impracticality of a sedan and rarity (availability) of wagons in Aus has always put me off.

@@loving_dad_explorer The letter M in BMW stands for Motor in German, meaning Engine. Kia managed to build a coach-builder copy of a car from a company that is known for it's engine excellence while using a crap engine from Hyundai-Kia's own parts bin. Kia should have bought the B58 engine from BMW, spending $55k on building each car then sell them for $35k each in order to compete against 3yr old lease returns from BMW and Audi. I'm actually all for Hyundai-Kia ripping off Korean car buyers then use the loot to subsidize overseas car buys in that fashion! Despite potentially getting a chance to lose more money by being fined by the US for "dumping." Unfortunately, Hybdai-Kia decided to use a crap engine from its own parts bin, so a car built around such a crap engine is worthless.

On the design question, I have to say that the Alfa Guilia is the benchmark in this class. BMW has done a reasonable copy of a Guilia to suit the Chinese market, but it looks like the work of a committee that could only agree by compromise: nice enough but not compelling.

The problem with asking people to subscribe is that they may post a comment, sorry. So, 122K as tested. The styling is fine. But, "the whole thing is quality". Great, what does that mean? Objectively? My impression from watching, it is over priced, my decision to buy a car from a "lesser" brand was a good one. I mean a boring interior and no redeeming features and why don't we all pony up? I am no Beemer hater, have never owned a car but have had many of their motorcycles.

It means that the build quality observed on test, breaking down the cabin materials and driving the vehicle over sustained rough roads, was better than average. It is a comment we’d bestow on any vehicle that we make that finding in, luxury or not. BMW are doing a good job of it at the moment. No need to apologise for commenting.

Value is perceived differently by lots of people. I like the driving dynamics of a BMW and I enjoy driving around mountain roads as a hobby, so I'll happily pay around the 100k mark for a car like this, given that my lifestyle and occupation allow me to buy a car like this. On the contrary, I might not see value in a vacation, or fine dining, or motorcycles (such as you).

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as well as other subscribers are and I don't know your age but the fact that you have never owned a car but have owned many BMW motorcycles begins to tell a story. You may well think that any car in this price bracket or for that matter, in a dearer price bracket and there are many, is a complete waste of money. Also keep in mind that although there is a big increase in price over a 420i or 430i, much of that increase is taken in additional tax including a huge LCT bill. So for those who don't want the full performance but still want the style and looks of the coupe with a BMW badge, it is available for a far more reasonable price.
