BMW 5 Series review
With more than forty years of development under its belt, the 5 Series just gets better and better. This latest model is a technical tour de force, plus it delivers class leading refinement and comfort. Yet like all BMW models, it’s surprisingly efficient and great to drive. We’ll have to wait until we get the car in the UK for our definitive verdict, but on this showing the executive car class has a new king.

Except the S90 can't fit in the same sentence with the XF. It's SUCH an overrated car. I prefer my 6 year old 530d in every single way. It drives better, it's quieter, it's more comfortable, more refined, the interior feels better put together and definitely uses higher quality materials, etc. Even looks more modern inside and out. The Volvo minimalism is dancing on a line between being minimalistic and bare, and it's leaning onto the bare side. On lower specs, the S90 literally feels cheap inside. The plastics on the dash and doors are rough and not particularly expensive looking, and in certain lights, have that cheap grey look to them.

When you're driving the car the engine cools down and you do not want to retain heat, any normal person understands that. but when the car is parked and turned off there are flaps that closes to retain the heat so the engine doesn't have to warm up again. those are mainly found in the grille

Just because it looks good in photos doesn't mean it feels the same irl. And most of the times Mercedes interiors don't. The fact the the G30's interior is driver oriented makes it feel better for the driver. I've not been in either so i can't say for a fact which is better and you neither. The E-Class does look better inside, but is it better ? Idk.

The new 5 series interior is similar to the current gen X5 interior, feels solid and well made but not as aesthetically pleasing as current mercedes line up (or even the new gen Audi's for that matter).

Well, just to clarify, BMW only updates their cars (not including facelifts) every 6-7 years for the 5 and 3 series, and it has been that way for ages. For an example, a 328i from 2012 with only 100k km still looks and feels up to date. This gives confidence when buying a new car, that the car you spent all your life savings on will be up to date for the next 6-7 years which is well inside the boundaries where most people keep their cars ~5 years. Unlike with a Mercedes, where you buy a new car and a few years later a completely different undistinguishable model comes along and makes your look old, but with the lease plan most people get, its hard to keep up with the CONSTANT updates... Audi, well, those who always buy a new one, needs serious help and maybe eye surgery.

I know BMW like the back of my hand. I worked there. They are very shinny and feels like a million dollars when new then a few months after you see how poor the interior quality is. From experience I don't trust it. The e class right now is the most technological advanced vehicle on the road. Gimmicks such as gesture control don't count.

Oh my god. This isn't the first time you've "guaranteed" that BMW doesn't have a particular technology and it turns out that they do and also had it before merc. Stop embarrassing yourself. I don't have time to research that right now. But they probably have it. They had a technology that even moves the headrest forward to cushion your head in case of a rear collision and this was as far back as the e60 5 series, so I'm sure they have the "flashing light" tech too.

I would have to disagree, i've sat in both and the volvo is very nice but feels like another car with a big screen in the middle, the mercedes feels very unique and special on the other hand. I will agree with you that the 90-series interior is especially the multi media is much easier to use than the mercedes. Mercedes has a complicated infotainment system.

Actually it goes very well, to be honest when i stepped into the volvo it felt very nice, unlike any volvo ever made but it just felt like an interior similar to other cars but very upmarket, but when i stepped into the mercedes it felt like a different class, everything works so fine and they have perfected the interior, driving one in the night felt like you were in a bentley or something with the widescreen and the interior lighting, to me there is no comparison honestly because it is so unique and it works so well. It does not have the interior similar to others where ypu have a dash eith a screen in the middle and gages infront of you

Leather is an option and wood is also an option. U can go to the mercedes website and see the trims and u can see that they have open pore wood which is actually wood. FYI it does not uses fake aluminium, the aircon vents are made from real aluminium and it is freezing cold when the air-con is on

Interesting comment about the interior. As a BMW fanboy, I still think the E-Class has the most luxe interior and the A6 has a better "sport" interior. Please do not quote BMW fuel and CO2 figures. Up to 65 mpg? You are joking. I have a six month old 515d Touring estate. On mainly motorway driving it has never averaged more than 42 mpg, and that is with the 8 speed auto box. This new 5 series looks too close to the outgoing model. The 5 series is a boring car. Boring to look at and boring to drive, well the four cylinder models for sure. For the money, a Mondeo is a much better drive and rides/handles far better than a 5 series without adaptive dampers. Don't be fooled by the BMW badge. The advantage the BMW has is in PCP deals, where high depreciation is exposed in more lowly competitors. The 5 series is cheaper to lease than a high spec Mazda 6. The new Mercedes E Class has moved the game on with its svelte good looks, but the BMQ 5 series is stuck in a time warp. A missed opportunity to lead the field once again.

I have seen both the e and 5 in real life. This might sound off but the E class interior is really bland and immature. The big stretched digital dash is cool but beyond that there is nothing there. The BMW interior is much more dynamic and uses more interesting materials, shapes and the night lighting is less club (like the e) and more sophisticated. For example the lcd in the speaker housing looks like it belongs in a Rolls Royce. And as far as the A5, I think even Lincoln has surpassed them. Have to see the redesign.

Mr Kruger the fact is everybody knows that bmw interior quality is a step behind from the ones of mercedes and audi. bmw focuses driving dynamics and handling, not the posh interiors.

The exterior and interior are so predictable, doesn't catch you by surprise at all with dramatic change if you compare to the E Class. All BMW did was to use better quality materials on the same old layout on the interior and lighter materials on the slightly bigger body, then put more computers on the car to make it more efficient, that's it. For that kind of money on a new car, I would rather go for E Class or Panamera. Or a second hand S Class or XJ that is still under warranty.

I also like this interior more than the new E class's. Mercs' interiors of late are so fancy and polished that I feel that I have to drive their cars in a tuxedo to the opera on every single occasion. How about driving to the market every once in a while? BMWs instead look modern and functional while also retaining this old school's flare of a proper driver's car. Don't get me wrong, I don't take any effort of the Munich car maker to be great. E90 and E60 for example had absolutely horrible, bland and ugly interiors. But this here, it's the perfect suit for any occasion in my humble opinion.

Just another BMW fawning reviewer... how boring just like the car. The e39 was incredible but every 5 series since has never captured that amazing balance.

why does he say that the 5 series had been overtaken by an audi a6. from my personal view, the audi is shit to drive when compared to the f10 5 series. i also think that the new model wont be as good to drive as the old model, as it will be more set up for comfort than the driving experience. the new model also doesnt look as good as the old model, it looks quite depressed
