It's a lovely car to drive my G31 520d M Sport but there are some small annoying things that you would take it for granted in a premium car. It's not easy to turn on the fog lights while driving (the steering wheel covers the switch), operating the back windows from the driver seat will make you hit the pillar with elbow, don't have a place to rest the right foot next to the pedal while the car is on cruise control on the motorway (other cheaper cars have that) and other few small things.

You didn't mention the Gesture control that the G30 came with. Not sure if it an option there in UK , but standard here in Australia. People think a 520d is too slow. But if you look at the stats its on par with s MkV golf GTI for HP. the 400 nm is just addictive on highway runs. My dad has just bought an 68 plate S213 E220d - we looked at both that and the 5 series G31. The G31 was indeed an excellent car. I think the 520d felt a bit 'quicker' than the E220d, and less cumbersome on the road. Mind you, it's a 5 metre long estate car so driving dynamics are definitely a bonus rather than a need. The advantage of the E Class is the equipment 'packs'. Some of the things that come standard on the 'Premium/Premium Plus' packages in the UK are very rare options on the 5 series. Memory seats, Panoramic roof, Park assist, Reversing camera - all standard on the E Class - we found barely any with some/all of these options in the 5 series. I also think on the used market, the E Class becomes much better value around 2 years old than the beemer. They are chucking out top spec E220d with 10k miles for £24-28k depending on spec, which frankly is a steal for the car you're getting.

I am boringly on my 5th 5 series currently a 2019 530e.in the last 10 years I,ve had tourer then saloon followed by yes yo can guess. I have lived the evolution and agree current car is so much better than my last and I can’t understand hoe BMW do it. I adored my first one and love the current one even more. A Luxo barge I know but my 60 mile drive to work is so much fun. Best thing on t.he car is without doubt that 8 speed box of tricks.

Great review, which couldn’t be more spot on. I have the 2018 xdrive M sport model in selenite grey. Looks absolutely great and drives fantastic. I opted for the smaller 18 inch alloy wheels, allows for a bit more cushioning for the pot holes on the Uk roads. Would highly recommend this car!

All what you say is true. But you don’t need a car to go 140, if I won the premium bonds I’d be tempted. However I’d pick a mondeo, odd I know but all you need is there. Just think of who you could help with the difference?

I know someone who has the 530e as a company car & It's really good in my eyes. Good looking, spacious, has enough power for everyday use & it's a wonderful place to sit inside, The only thing I would change is the saloon to a Estate & the price is quite high. (So is everything else)

Here in Finland lots of 2 liter diesel four-bangers nowadays, thanks to expensive fuel prices. Yeah I’d love one of these but right now my heart is pumping towards stupid looking JDM cars, well that’ll be over in a few weeks and then I’ll be wanting something else again lol. 5:07 ”Richard, do be careful parking the car in front of the manor house. Yes, park it next to the Mercedes, so it looks better! My Sheridan would be appalled if you’d park it next to that awful old car! Mind the horses dear! Sound the horn!!”

Another great vid. I've been wanting an estate version for years, always loved them. I looked at one recently and was astonished at the physical size. I don't know if I've been going around with my eyes half open in the past but I may have to consider a 3 series because I actually found it quite intimidating. Or I might be getting old.

Not at all Neil, i do find the 5 series and the E class intimidating in size. I have an old B6 Passat estate and the difference is measurable. I got scared when lifting up an E class on axle stands - that's never happened before!

Couldn't agree more. I brought my G31 530d Msport in December 2020 with 1400 miles on the clock for £30000. I was worried about the steep depreciation after losing £27000 in the first 6 months of it's life, but after 15 months of ownership, and 15000 miles it's hardly lost anything and never missed a beat! The 6 cylinder is so smooth, sounds awesome and gives excellent fuel consumption averaging 38.5mpg mixed driving. Tax is expensive at £475 per year and service cost £400 for a oil change and cabin filter. Overall its the best all round car I've ever owned after 30 years of volkswagens and many hot hatches. This is a sheep and wolf's clothing and takes many of performance car by surprise. The torque from this engine is unbelievable and pulls my caravan with total ease, holding 8th gear at 1300 revs. Only down side is th msport seats are a little harsh on the thighs!
@paulhann32883 жыл бұрын
Wow, Andrew why is your road tax so expensive? Emissions are very low for a 3 litre so I really cannot understand why you paying so much! I ask the question because I have been seriously considering buying a 530d SE (I prefer a softer ride than the M sport can supply) but now I am not so sure. Maybe I will have to downgrade to the 520d, which I have been told is completely adequate.

I was thinking the same surely your tax isint that per year on a 20 plate !! Im paying way less on a 435 d x drive ???
@andreww95742 жыл бұрын
It's the luxury car tax, anything after may 2017 over £40000 pays extra tax for the first 5 years of its life, then it goes down to roughly £170. A government rip off tax. Still after 2 years it's still worth 29975 on we buy any car, so can't complain too much. Still can't think what I'd replace it with. I've been so impressed with it!

You don't need to put premium fuel in a 520d, at least if you use it regularly for motorway runs. Just put quality oil in it and keep up with the serving and maintenance.
