This electrical problem has been intermittent since completing the work to repair the broken timing chain. As usual, you should always do your fundamental checks first, before getting caught up with complex fault theories....

Good one! My motto used to be 'to measure is to know', nowadays it is turned into 'know what you measure'. I've seen a lot of people just connect the black wire to a chassis point and then starting to troubleshoot measuring 12 Volts everywhere without realizing that there might be a chance that there is something wrong with the ground connection. Fixed my wife's Renault like this 2 weeks ago. Corrosion in the connectors. 12 Volts showed up like a champ but the ground pin had a serious resistance making it a Xmas tree. The fix, twisting the prong in a connector. 15 Minute fix .

Many thanks fixed also. Came up as a 8040B6 fault in my scanner regarding starter relays etc. I have recently swapped engine and gearbox of a F31 335d following a flood incident. I had done exactly what you did. Managed to test it with a jump lead from engine lifting eye to the chassis negative post and Bingo it worked. Saved me lots of beer vouchers! Well done, nice video.

So I'm doing a complete engine trans and sub frame removal on my 2011 f10, I have everything removed off the engine and complete front removed. Ex. Dme cable main battery etc... so I moved under the cat and started with the ground strap then moved over to the dive shaft and tried to put in neutral with the side lever which worked but forgot I had the pbrake engaged so I got all the way from under the cat and try to disengage and to my surprise I couldn't lol duh battery was undone so I recon the battery and nothing then I think maybe dme recon dme nothing and for 2 days now in the rain I've been trying to figure it out and with your help I do believe the answer is my trans ground strap is just dangling in the wind 😂. Tomorrow I will gives this a go and see where it lands me thanks👍🏽

Spot on fix...also just to pitch in , I had a stranded f07 GT in the fast lane after a traffic jam stop start..no start just click and info telling me not to turn it off lol. It turned out to be the main high amp battery feed cable. It goes through a bulkhead fitting near/above the diff...it was corroded and not making a feed. Also i had no charge. Easy check if you ever get the same fault is to use a long jumper lead from the positive battery to the jumper point under bonnet. If you get a start its the main positive lead. I bought one ebay and spliced it in and heat shrank...now perfect. I must add the fault cost me a alternator battery and starter test just through corrosion.

Good find , as you know earth fault can create all sorts of funny faults , i recall a work transit with a dodgy earth where the wipers horn and headlights were coming on when the central locking was activated re fob - turned out it was a bad earth and not the body control module

Relay in the boot is for the air suspension. I had two fail in quick succession which after the replacement failed I discovered was due to water ingress and hence resulted after a week or two of the failure with zero suspension! To date I have not worked out where the water was getting in but it pools out of sight in the void below the battery box. The voids quite deep and can hold enough water to slosh about e.g when going up a hill and drown the relay. I have since relocated the relay higher up but to date haven't found any more water in the boot either. Halfords do a perfectly adequate replacement relay for about £8

The infamous BMW bong.... drove me up the wall. Absolutely everything has the same bong. Inserted keys into ingnition.. "BONG". Turned ignition.... "BONG BONG BONG". Low on washer fluid.... "BONG".... Car door open.... "BONG".... Engine failure imminent.... "BONG". I am pretty certain my car was trolling me, it used to bong sometimes just to annoy me.

@@bigkification Maaaybeee the car want's a Bong. Just a suggestion. Or the engineers had to much sniffled at a Bong. Questions that may never be answered. I like the bong in a certain way, because my E39 does also a "8 bit-ish" bong, but when it does that you are really "What the hell is broken now?!" Oh, bulb is broken or it is less than 3 degrees outside.

My 2008 520d was always having low battery warning and frequently wouldn't turn over. Disconnected the IBS 2 years ago never had a problem since then. Original battery too

We see that allot at BMW, on 3 and 1 series the earth strap corrodes.

Hi we’re is this ground cable come from do you think this will be same on my 520d 2011 f10 I replaced engine and there is bolt to the body looks fresh but I don’t have ground cable only one coming from gearbox to the body and don’t know if there was one car was robbed and a lot stuff missing basically done this car from the scratch and looks like I am missing ground cable I got n47 engine and car not starting nearly all electric stuff o checked just feels like I am missing ground somewhere??

He removed the ground strap on the transmission and when he put it back on he didn't tighten it all the way........I did the same thing on my channel 2 days ago and drove my self up the wall until I came across his video 😅 but all is good now and the tear down continues

Hi I have an 2013 F10 and it cut out on a hill and now cranks but does not start ,the following error codes are coming up 249300 , e12c03 and cd9433. Are you able to shed any light on this please.

Those codes are tricky to find much on, however I believe e12c03 is related to the fuel level sensor (part of the fuel sender unit in the fuel tank). I would investigate if you’re getting any fuel from the tank to see if the fuel sender (pump) has failed or if the fuel filter is blocked?

When you have a “No Start” problem I find it’s best to begin with the basics & rule out each part one by one. Does the starter motor activate & turn the engine over, or does nothing happen when you turn the key?

Remember that in my video from where my engine failed there were camshaft error codes, but this was because my timing chain broke while driving. Did something happen while the engine was running (like a sudden jolt?) and now it won’t start? If so, your timing chain may have failed & you get the camshaft error code because the camshaft isn’t turning anymore when the starter turns the engine over. Hopefully this isn’t your problem, but it is a possibility.

Long shot here but going to ask anyway. I have the F10 520d (2012) and am failing to get it started. No crank whatsoever. Broke down on me with a driveshaft fault. Current error codes D91410 and E09424. Any idea what I'm dealing with here? The brake pedal is also very stiff.

Hi there. It’s pretty hard to diagnose problems remotely, but I’ll try to help... The first code appears to point to a problem with the CAS module (car access & immobiliser system), and the other seems to relate to the instrument cluster. However, the fault may not lie there - they may have just logged faults because of a bigger problem elsewhere. A problem with the CAS could give you a ‘no crank’ situation though as it won’t allow the ignition system to operate. Your brake pedal will be firm because you have no hydraulic pressure at your brake booster - don’t worry about that.

Will the dash light up & things generally turn on when you press the Start button? Did you have any work done on the car recently? I would probably do a few basic voltage checks to see where power is getting to & where not. Use a test lamp rather than a multimeter if you can because a test lamp will actually draw a little current (unlike a multimeter)

@@Nut_Job. Thanks for the quick response. Yea, the lights do come on on the cluster. The confusing part is that I hadn't done any work on it when the drive train problem first presented itself. The car wouldn't start up then. I gave it a quick lube change at the time (because it was due) and somehow it got going again. After about a day or so it died on my wife in traffic and I haven't been able to figure out what the root issue is. I'll take your advise and do some voltage troubleshooting with a test light.

Ok, I think it’s going to take a bit of careful fault finding. If you have a decent diagnostic code reader then that will be really useful too. Don’t put too much faith in the iDrive message about a ‘Drivetrain Error’ because it tends to say that with almost anything engine-transmission related.

I’m not sure, sorry. I think generally BMW try to put things in roughly similar places across the range, but I can’t be sure.

Hi My gearbox has been changed , everything worked good now car wont start, they say as i told them what happend with you, that the screw is not tight they say it thats not possible because They even marked it to make sure its tight

Need to try some basic fault finding. Use a 12v test lamp to follow back where you’ve got 12v. See if there’s a permanent 12v at the starter, then if the signal voltage is present when you try starting etc... 👍

Nut Job man you saved me a bunch off money , what i did for other people to help is , grab a Very thick jump starter cable Attach to the negativ pole on the chassie , and To yhr engine and my car started So its their fault for not making that screw tight , god bless you sir , im waiting for the Oil cath can video please do it

You’re right - I do love a good ‘tinker’ with a car!.... and actually it’s slightly unfair to say this BMW is troublesome (yet...) because it’s only big issue was the snapped timing chain. The electrical headache was caused by myself, so really there’s just small jobs to tidy it up a bit now 😀

I dont get it...yes german cars all drive nice but theyre sub standard quality now and have been for years...its well documented on line...folk must just love fixing them and spendig money needlessly...buy a Lexus...loads to pick from...youll find something you like...drive it fuel it service it...no dirt under your nails

George Austers agreed, but many original parts are not quality - that’s my point, unlike Toyota and Honda, BMW you’re paying for brand and initial performance but not longevity

​@@mrbigvanlife7130 Well, partly right and also wrong. The F10 and F30 with the N57 engines are known to run 200-300k kilometers mostly without any catastrophic failure. Rarely a snapping chain or blown out rod bearings. And to be honest: Nut Jobs F10 had a rough life before he owned it. The timing chain might have come from that. Also HOW the car was driven makes a great difference in what goes south. I mean, some guys drive their cars everytime from the cold into the revlimiter, their engines might fail 100k earlier than a well taken care of engine (driven warm and cold, driven with brain and not a constantly heavy foot, regular oil changes every 15k km and so on) which outlasts the beaten engine many kilometers and years. I agree, with german brands you pay a extra for the brand, but also older cars have many problems. But there was no internet to document them like nowadays. Every brand has problems, but with a cheaper car you can say "Well, didn't cost as much as a bmw, the failure is then not so bad".

Well this can also be because of a bad ground strap so don't knock him we all make mistakes in the moment.
