It's like watching a horror movie. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the snap! I'm not looking forward to when I have to do it.

Thankfully no studs snapped! But I was feeling uneasy when removing the nuts. Drilling into the head is not my idea of fun... I suggest taking your time when doing the job.

Awesome job as always! Very impressed with the camera angles as well, excellent presentation!

That’s one of the cleanest engine bays I’ve ever seen, not hard to tell the car hasn’t seen winter weather. Did you torque those two studs back into the head to a certain spec or just go hand tight? Do you feel using loctite on the studs or anti seize on the nuts would be beneficial? All but one of mine came out with the nut attached, my poor M30 has been daily driven in Canada since 1990.
@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr Collett, thanks for the nice words! I did not torque the two studs, I just tightened them by hand until they were at the right depth. I used some foam on a pair of pliers to tighten the studs but I didn't want to overdo it, to not crush the threads. Is there a way to torque studs that have threads on them? Maybe using a special gripper tool... Copper antiseize probably wouldn't be a bad idea yes. I should have used some but didn't think of it at the time.

So, just for the record, which brand penetrating oil did you use in advance to loosen the nuts? There are a few types but I want to use the one that you did! Thanks very much for doing this video.... -Robert
@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) I believe I used PB Blaster that time. That was before I ran out and switched to Kleen-Flo branded penetrating oil (it's what my local Napa store had; I bought a case of it). I did a few jobs with the Kleen-Flo and it works just as well as PB Blaster. I think you'll be Ok with any reputable brand out there. The important part is to let it soak.

Another terrific intelligent preventative maintenance video. Do you think you could do this with the exhaust still attached? Some of us might not have removed that. Nice to see the bolts reused too. Did you look at cleaning the inside of the manifold or that wasn’t needed? On the springs to come- I know why you are doing this- they do naturally ride a little high in the front. Less so at the rear (especially with the tank full). Not bad at all for minus 25! What else had you removed to get the access? Lee
@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee thanks for your comment. I'm not sure about doing the job with the exhaust in place... I would want to jack the exhaust a bit to relieve some tension, but even with the exhaust jacked, I'm not sure if the long studs that bolt to the downpipes could slide out. The manifolds would need to be raised up to slide out the studs, and there isn't enough room because of the head of the engine. It would be worth a try, but ultimately I think dropping the front of the exhaust would lead to less frustration. To get access for the job I only dropped the exhaust and removed the air cleaner. I also unplugged the spark plug wires but that was mostly to gain some room when cleaning the head. I did clean the insides of the manifolds with a caliper brush and it removed some deposits. Then I used a file to make the mating surface flat. Yes the springs will only be used to balance the look of the car. The rear is fine as you say, and it can even be adjusted with the LAD suspension.

Amazing job once again. The rocker cover is so clean, did you apply any clear coat or do anything to it to have it look so clean? Plus, have you ever adjusted your valves before? Thanks again for sharing, great video.
@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes the valve cover is quite clean. It still has signs of yellow cosmoline on it but it's not bad. I only cleaned it using Purple Power (Canadian Tire) and some scrubbing. I adjusted the valves twice, the first time was to get familiar with the process (I had never done it). The second time went quicker and I think I was more accurate. The engine seems to work ok.
@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
Sorry the cleaner is called Super Clean, not Purple Power.

@@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec oh yes. Good stuff, I use the same. Thx again. I am going to try the valve adjustment next month.

@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec2 жыл бұрын
