Take spin in a 1980s classic BMW with me. The '86 635CSi (not restored) with the manual transmission. Not everyones cup of tea but a car I have always wanted to get my sticky hands on.

Luv it! My uncle had an 1986 635 csi in red! Awesome audio system ! Soo sleek! He let me drive it when I was 16! What a thrill! It was an automatic! Thanks for the memories!

A 635 CSI was my first ever car! I had an employer who said “you buy the car, we pay the petrol”. So naturally I hunted for the biggest engine I could afford! I found one of the last of the line which at that point was 12 years old. I loved the car but it eventually broke on me and I couldn’t afford to keep running it. Wonderful machine though. Great memories.

So happy to see the love & appreciation for the E24 remains alive and well. I almost sold mine recently, but changed my mind shortly before listing it. I will probably never sell it. Please do buy one if you so desire. You will not be disappointed my friends. Cheers! 🍻

I had a Euro M635CSi. The previous owner had a Euro spec 1993 M5, M38 3.8 liter 340 hp. The head was reworked ported and polished race head with stainless steel valves with 3 angle valves. It had Schrick road racing cams. It had a custom header 3 into 1 with a custom 3” diameter exhaust system. It also had a Gettrag dog leg 5-speed gearbox with 5 th gear being 1:1 direct drive. The differential had 3.73:1 gears with limited slip. I had it dyno’d and it had 375 hp at the rear wheels! It really shocked many M3’s and M5’s. Top speed was 165 mph at 6,800 rpm and it pulled like a freight train all the way to 6,800 rpm. I regret selling that automobile!

I'm only 8 years late watching this video Nick - can't understand how I missed it. Bought a 1986 635CSi here in the UK back in March. 1 owner car with a full main dealer BMW service history and 72000 miles from new. Got it up on the ramp at my mate's garage and it's solid underneath (e24s had a bit of a reputation for the old 'tin-worm'). Mechanically solid, got all the fluids changed and renewed the brakes (it didn't have much left in that department...). Interior is practically untouched and it drives like it should. It's a 4-speed switchable auto, which I actually prefer since it's a 'cruiser' rather than an out-and-out sports car (unlike my 1996 993 Carrera 2). Joy of joys, even my wife 'quite likes it' , comfortable, quiet, big boot. Happy wife, happy life! Going to take it up to North Yorkshire in a couple of weeks to give it a good blast over the moors (cue Kate Bush and 'Wuthering Heights'..). Keep up the good work mate, we're looking forward to going back to NZ next year for a little trip in a campervan (RV in the states), love the scenery, the beer and the uncrowded roads. Cheers from a rather wet Otford, Kent, UK.

BMW 635 CSi has always been my favorite car. A beauty and a design marvel. I really never watch cars on youtube, but thanks to Nick I am getting into this. Thank you for a real insight to an original conditioned car. BMW were feinsmeckers, and still are. I never owned a car, other than a 'Beetle' for two months twenty years ago. I am riding my bicycle where ever. But I would love to own a BMW 635 CSi. Wow...imagine that! ; )

A man after my own heart Nick - Growing up in the 80s in NZ, if you looked beyond the V8 Holden's etc these and the 3 series BMWs were the aspirational cars to have! I remember watching the E30 M3s dominate the Wellington Street race (Nissan Mobil 500?), beating cars with twice the displacement - been obsessed with BMW's ever since. Last year I finally saved enough for a 335i - not quite as nice as your M4, but plenty fast enough for me! Enjoy your vids, keep them up.

I love those 80's vintage BMW's also. My Dad had a 1982 E28 528e, then a 1985 E28 535i. The 535i was an absolute blast with the 5 speed and posi rear end. In 3rd gear it would pull from 40 km/hr to about 130km/hr and on to a top speed of 210 km/hr. ERR, so I've been told :-P One night I surprised the hell out of an IROC Z28, LOL My dream car was a 1988 E28 M5, but they are extremely rare, especially now. Only 50 were sold in Canada. Anyway, great video as always :-)

The most famous E24 owner I can recall was Cliff Barnes, portrayed by Ken Kencherval in the TV Series 'Dallas'. Where bobby Ewing drove a Mercedes SLC and J.R some American iron, Cliff Barnes' choice of an E24 635CSi as his mode of transport reflected the car's status fitting with that of the young, successful and dynamic lawyer. And talking of lawyers, I am in the process of buying my lawyer's late husband's car; a 1986 ultra low mileage I owner since new 635CSi to add to the E30 M3 Evo2 which I have owned since new.

Nice Video, Nick. I'm German and this is one of the dream cars of my youth. And yes, in Germany this car look much better than in the U.S. and our streets are not so monotonius. If you ever come to Germany near Cologne or to the North for driving on our "Autobahn" or the legendary "Nürburgring", tell me. I can offer you an apartment here or a house at the Northcoast, perhaps with some connections to nice cars here.

What a great car. Bmw's from that period allow a remarkable interaction with the road, even the 3 or 5 series...the way the chassis read the road and the feel they provide trough the seat and the steering it's amazing. The engine note's great and Aesthetically wise that 6 it's one of the beautiful cars ever...Totality get your enthusiasm! Great review!

Hey Nick, after spending the last half hour watching your E30 and now the E24, I'D like to express my gratitude for you sharing your experience with the rest of us, I really enjoyed watching these old machines perform - there is some relaxed ambiance about driving/owning these older models. Seeing that I've grown up in the 90's, my favorite BMW is the E39 which I'd love to purchase in mint condition after university will finally be over. This brings me to the question whether you'd be interested in reviewing one- provided you find a nice model? cheers David

David Singer Yes I have a friend in the UK with a E39 M5. I like that shape and of course it being the first M5 to hit the 400hp mark it is pretty special. The only down side is that they don't feel that fast even though they are, the S62 did not have a lot of torque so for such a big car it never really presses you back into the seat like you think it would. I would love to find a E28 M5 as well.

Great review as always Nick. Those old E24s are really beautiful cars and synonymous with the 80s. I drive one of the current 6ers the F13 which I think has retained some of the heritage of its illustrious lineage. Would love to try an E24 myself one day to see how they compare. Interesting you mention the rear windows on the coupé. I think as recently as the E46 coupé the rear windows opened (albeit in the horizontal (and very slightly) rather than the vertical). It's a little bit sad that BMW no longer has this feature on their coupés. Looking forward to your next video. Keep up the good work!
