BMWs Equipped with automatic transmissions regardless of whether they are ZF or GM are what is called adaptive and learn to shift in response to your driving style. I bought my BMW used a year ago. Always noticed it shifted a bit odd at times especially when I was in traffic. It would shift down as soon as I let off the throttle sometimes aggressively. I was worried I was going to need a new transmission. I did this throttle reset. Runs smooth as can be and much better over all. Thanks so much.

I tried it on my E88 convertible when I thought I had a faulty transmission, but after having BMW test it it came back negative so no faults, however I could feel it didn’t drive as good or just didn’t feel right, so I tried it and it worked for me! I'm sure I'll be mocked but my e82 is manual transmission and I did this for giggles. To learn how I drive normal and start stop places all over my city. Before I did it, I am the cars 2nd owner FWIW, leaving from a dead stop before following directions here, I was perplexed why my roll out was being sloppy/jerky. After this the car is perfectly driving from 1st and smooth as butter through all gears. Don't think it's an illusion or delusion at all. I'm convinced it helped,.

I think BMW standard tools or ISTA+ is actually required for resetting adaptations, tried what this dude said multiple times and no changes. I used the software and it worked. Also if you want to reset oil wear after an oil change on your transmission (GM6 in my case) BMW standard tools or ISTA+ is a requirement. I tried using my MaxiCheck 808 and it said it doesn’t support transmission adaptations or oil wear reset.

Okay so you're saying put the key in push the ignition and then put your foot on the accelerator for 1 minute and that will reset the transmission hopefully this works cuz I get this weird feeling from the previous owner headed on 19-in wheels and I lowered it to 18 that was the only wheel that I had left forgot to mention one more thing this is good for the n51 engine or transmission correct

@@E90Mel 6L45R is a GM auto. BMW didn't go to 100% ZF until Punch group bought the Strasbourg France plant from GM. Then they started making ZF boxes under license.

I'm thinking about buying a 2006-07 BMW 320d E90 with Automatic Gearbox... The problem is I'm very sceptic about older automatic gearboxes (I also never had a car with an auto gearbox), and although those cars are very reliable, I'm afraid the Auto Gear might bring me some (very expensive) issues. Could anyone give me a second opinion on this, based on knowledge/experience? Thank you in advance.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned. Of course there is always risk with any car especially a used one. Just make sure it’s not leaking and have the fluid & filter changed (not flushed).

This is actually only for the GM transmission. The ZF doesn’t do this.

No this method won’t help with that. I’m not familiar with xDrive but I believe they mean via a scan tool or something like that.

According to my personal experience, there are two different adaptation processes are identical unless you keep your foot for 5 min for throttle body and 30 min for transmission resets. Cheers.

I really am not sure. But on my e90 the shifter broke some wires that it connects to and made my sport mode not responsive. Maybe that has happened to you but is effecting the entire assembly. I would take it apart and look for broken wires.

It should be GM. If it has the N52 it most likely is. Some LCI E92 328is got the ZF. But the overwhelming majority have GM transmissions. The only sure fire way to know is to look at the underside of the car. GM transmissions have a metal pan that is grey/silver while ZF has a plastic composite one that is black.

No it’s not to activate the coolant bleed procedure you have to have the heat on the lowest setting it’s very similar but slightly different so don’t go talking about stuff you don’t know about

The yellow gear is a transmission error warning. I don’t know what the cause would be. If you have a 335i download xHP and scan for codes.

So, there's never a need/possibility to 'reset', except for changes in hardware (transmission internals). I think this is grossly overstated. It is absurd to think these cars use data from the first driver to make difference in behavior in the future. If I check on my gas mileage I get an average of recent history not from the first mile driven. Adaptive means it changes to suit how the car is driven. If I spend sometime driving my e92 hard and abruptly change the circumstance it appears to change gears at higher revs, as the car "adapted" to my driving at the time. What is described as "adaptive" is locked to the first driver unless someone has this trick which is the "key" to the lock. BMW has some strange ways to non-Germans maybe but this is not one of them. No I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

this method is for electrical water pump not transmission reset...you'll need a DIS to reset transmission adaptation value.

The water pump bleed procedure is similar but not the same. For the water pump it needs to be on 84 degrees heat and the blower must be the lowest setting. They are two separate procedures.

Is there a drive cycle afterwards? Like don't floor it for a certain amount of time? Or put it in traffic, or highway, 1 mile, 100 miles? I got a TCU flash, and it was awesome, I was told to drive it soft at 1st. The moment I felt it was enough, I floored it, and now I'm shifting at ultra low rpms and I hate it. I'm always in sport mode just to not get mad about it. But D is terrible but not until I floored it. I waited about 10 miles before that. And It was perfect. It's like i messed up the learning process. So i need to know how long to wait after i do your neat trick, do need to wait before I hit the fun pedal again. Thanks. Sorry so long.

Yes probably about 20 miles is probably about right. When I got my xHP flash on the 335i it recommended 50 miles but that’s from an actual flash. Did you get the Alpina flash?

There are links that show the relearn process involves light acceleration to speed and coasting to a stop, light brake if needed. Repeat 5 times then other steps in sport mode for relearn as well.

You need to drain your transmission fluid at least twice for it to work. Maybe temperature is too hot which cause the fault light to show up. Need to stop and let it cool down and restart. Get the transmission fluid change but do not flush. Just drain. Have it drain twice. Once won't help. It must be twice. Only use Dextron VI or BMW recommended fluid. Good luck that should help. And then do this procedure to adopt to your driving. Again good luck

Mech Eng No it definitely works. The car will even act funny for the first bit of driving afterwards as it tries to relearn shift points.
