A number of points on this video are not actually quite correct. 1. The Vanos solenoid shown in the video isn’t off a B58 2. Neither is the oil filter. Oil filter failures have nothing to do with the filter being crushed through over tightening. It is due to a design flaw in the filter and the O rings at its base gripping too tightly on removal leading to the base of the filter shearing off. Impossible to crush the filter unless you install the wrong part. 3. The coolant loss common on the B58 and is caused by the use of O-rings in the coolant caps. These dry out and seize which damages them when the caps

Boost pressure is not going to be the root cause of oil pan/valve cover gasket leaks. Those have been bmw issues since forever and trust me, that's long before they were turbocharging their street engines. The root cause of those leaks boils down to gasket materials and heat cycling. It's going to happen to literally every car out there today. Coolant loss can be as simple as replacing the main circuit reservoir cap, you'll see the residue on the threads if this is the case. Worst case you have a leak from the intake manifold where the liquid to air intercooler is located and will have to replace it. Also keep in mind that these engines reverted to a mechanical water pump mounted to the engine block for the main circuit and therefore it can leak. Head gasket failure is quite rare for these engines. Pcv issues are common on this engine series. The first gen b58 has a serviceable pcv diaphragm that can tear which will cause a crazy amount of smoke at idle, luckily it's a $30 part that's easily replaced. The 2nd and 3rd gen b58 do not utilize this and if you have one you will have to replace the valve cover. Fuel injectors can be problematic for this engine and a leaky injector can cause engine damage, ive certainly heard of more than a few injector failures occurring with this engine that have caused serious problems for their owners.

Great video as always! I love the car and I find myself checking up on it. The best BMW engine yet but there are always problems if the owner isn't diligent. With great power comes great responsibility. People are willing to spend a good chunk of change on a vehicle and they want power and to not even think about it. With the simplicity of an electric system I can't see engines going on as the primary power plant for cars. Hopefully governments will see the novelty and understand why buyers want the drama.

That is very very hard to say as that depends on the owners previously to the car if the car had been looked after, then you won’t encounter half these issues. If you get a bad neglected one these problems will be imminent straight away as soon as you buy it regardless of mileage. I hope this helps its very hard to say what car a person will buy and with what mileage and from who. Therefore I can’t tell you exactly when they will fail just they are known to fail but it’s all different upon different cars

@@BMWDoctor yeah that makes sense but an average would be a good marker. Do some issues pop up at 15k or will they last for ages. I'm getting an m140i pretty soon, heard of the usual coolant loss, oil filter damage and exhaust valve spring rattle. First I've heard of the ignition coils, that was a snag on the N55 35i engines and older straight 6's, never heard of it on B58 40i engines until now. Coolant loss almost always shows up no leaks when checked so just keep topping it up and it doesn't seem manifest itself into anything. Most common is exhaust valve spring rattle, easily fixed as you and many others have shown. Only other thing I can think, servicing wise I don't think they have a service interval for the ZF gearbox fluid, but ZF themselves recommend something like 60k miles off the top of my head? Worth considering if you're going to be owning the car long term as I believe even at an Indy you're looking at £300 minimum. And that's one thing you should be careful with who you trust to do that gearbox service. I'd only take mine to a BMW Indy that's done plenty as there are quite a few things to go wrong by all accounts.

I can't understand why BMW persists with the silly plastic valve cover. Mercedes does not do this madness and doesn't have these silly issues with valve timing solenoids etc. I think a Merc might have similar "issues" in terms of quantity to a BMW, but the Mercedes seem to built for better long term durability. On VANOS solenoids, change the oil every 7,500 to 10,000 km instead of the silly long recommended interval and you can avoid that issue in my experience. The oil filter issue is shocking. They never had this issue in the past in my experience but they also never used to bury these under the freakin' intake manifold which BMW chose to do on this engine for a reason that is beyond comprehension. On ignition coils, I swapped all of mine at 180K km when they didn't fail on my N55. With BMW's failure to address these issues and the stupid oil filter and timing chain locations, I'm thinking it's time to switch to something simpler and better thought out.

All the same crap as the older engines. Amazes me BMW cannot fix the same issues they had forever.

No your wrong ! It ain’t the engines that’s unreliable, it’s the owners.

At this rate, it’s more of a feature, rather than an issue

Been driving an N55 in a 2014 535xi GT. The car weights over 4K pounds, and no catastrophic issues.

Not so sure about reliability after just 105,000 miles... This is not spam... I really need help with this. My 2017 BMW 540i G30 just burned a valve #4 cylinder. (105k miles) I had the vsfr high flow cat, upgraded charge pipe, k&n air filter, new B58TU Fuel pump, and Bootmod3 Stage 2+ 93 octane. I am beyond depressed!😢 I am a Single Dad with 1 special needs, child. I was told I need a new engine that will cost 21k installed. I just can't! 😭 I still owe 25k, and it is my only car. I have nothing right now and am about to lose my job. I can't get my kids to the doctors, etc... If you can please reach out to your connections and see if they can help, I would be forever grateful 🙏 (Huntsville, Alabama USA) 🤔A rebuild and breakdown of what went wrong with my B58 might help others with B58. (Content Idea) God bless you, brother!!! ~J. McCall
