a year later and some people see this engine already as the new 2jz or a better n54 since it is closed deck. 600 and more whp just with bolt ons and ecu so no problem there. and already forged internals are great anyway

I know with my n54 I hated it having an electrical waterpump. But living in Phoenix, AZ I love having it to still pump coolant once I park and shut off the engine. Especially after driving in rush hour for an extended amount of time.

I have a 440i and it has a b58. I chose it because I get 370hp with the MPPSK upgrade. Literally almost an m4 for 20K cheaper and sounds better than the S55 Lawnmower

Most of air to water intercooler don’t have upgrades to the intercooler (air charge cooler) itself but the upgrades are done to the radiator for that intercooler (heat exchanger) with something that has more coolant capacity and surface area

I drive a N55 and having ridden in a B58 I can say the lack of top range power in the n55 is definetly noticeable. Both amazing engines powering amazing cars.

I’m the owner of a N55 M135i , and i agree with your opinion about the power! My brother drives an M140i with the B58 and it definately pulls harder, but the sound of the N55 is soo much better ...

BMW tech here Fun fact. There is two b58 engines There’s the b58 high out put With 6 exhaust ports. Which is shown in the video And the b58tu which is a technical update and that’s the engine in the Toyota Supra.

I thought the B58TU was the one with the 6 ports. The one in the 2020 Supra also only has 2 ports, the 2021 gets the 6 ports. The Technical Update didn't come until 2018 (First one was 2 port which which debuted in 2015)

@@davidgul5394 So I did some research and the Technical Update did improvements on the 6 port, but also introduced the 2 port version, what I said before was wrong. I thought the 2 ports were used in other vehicles too here in the U.S but they're only used in vehicles from places with Emission regulations like Europe, and of course the 2020 Supra

There are couple of people running 750-800whp out there. And one with 940whp :) with a lot more room to go 😃. You should consider forged pistons going above 550-600whp as that’s a weak point

My friend has one and it makes 510 hp and 693nm on stock turbo all what he did is stage2 highfuelpump stage2 ecu stage3 gearbox 4.5inch downpipe and full straight pipe.

a more interesting question, that I’ve yet to find any information on. Does the gen 1 and gen 2 B58 still use a BorgWarner turbo from factory like they did on the N55? Thanks!

Does anyone know what the stock head gasket material is? B58 and B48 specifically. I can't find anything specific.. one page says aluminum, the next says multi-layer steel etc.

The N55 in the M235 and M2 have forged cranks and beefed up bearings. The B58 has a rear mounted timing chain and VANOS. That means the motor has to come out for any timing chain, VANOS, or tensioner work. The B58 shares it's block with the turbo diesel varients. That's why it's closed deck; not specifically because BMW wanted to make a overly robust block for the gasoline turbos. It's to save cost.

Yea I heard about that how it shares diesel components, either way it is strong. But the VANOS, timing chain, etc will be a PAIN in the ass to deal with if it goes out. Pray you have a warranty if you own one

And I have a platinum warranty since 2016 is the first year of B58. So if there are timing chain problems, I'm covered. Currently saving for MPPSK

remaps are available for around 600 of your U.S dollars included Options: Exhaust flaps open, enhanced exhaust overrun burble with bangs, cold start off, recalibrated sports dials, speed limit off, torque by gear, switchable power levels via driving mode. Original Power: 340 bhp Remap Power: 440 bhp Original Torque: 500 Nm (387 ftlb) Remap Torque: 650 Nm (479 ftlb)

The B58 DME can’t take e85 well at all and caps out/backs off power at 400whp, so that’s a bummer since it limits the potential! It notices the increase in boost above a certain threshold and bleeds the boost off. Terry Burger is still trying, but no new update yet 😔

It doesn't "bleed the boost" off, it cuts the fuel/timing. Terry tried running 24 psi with meth, but it was too lean. You can safely run 20-21 psi with meth.

Not all n54 motors had forged internals. It was only the earlier released motors. I believe the first year or two.

H Simple Water pump is in the front of the engine So no on the pump. But timing chain and oil pump is in the back. Hopefully those don’t have any issues. Only time will tell.

Why? You can already get an upgraded turbo that is designed to fit the n55 with huge power potential. Why try to take an already expensive turbo from BMW and tack on a costly manifold adapter to try and retrofit it onto a manifold it doesn't fit?

because these cars have auto stop/start, they have to have an electric water pump to keep the engine cool at a stop. when the engine turns off at a stop light, the serpentine belt stops so the mechanical pump is now off. the electronic water pump can then kick in to cool the engine until the engine starts again.

Figure out what the guys at Primus Auto did to make their E92 n54 sound so deep. Supposedly same set up as you but your 335 sounds more of the “normal” n54 tone and less like an n55. Maybe different piping? Not sure

have a stock 740 with the b58 she's not slow and underrated for sure like any bmw engine (feels years faster than a stock n55I've driven), power doesn't teeter off towards the top end and plenty of low end! not like i'm gonna tune a 7 series anyway lmao

Slightly bigger turbo wheels keeps it from dying off at the last 1k rpms.. Also the shorter intake tract with the Water-Air intercooler increases efficiency and cuts turbo lag, a lott!

The M240i is the only 2-coupe equipped with the B58. M2 runs the last N55, with a forged crank and pistons.

I think the turbo in the n55 is the same as the b58, it’s a borg Warner b03, sane turbo in the a45 amg

Same turbo, but slightlyyy bigger Turbine and Compressor Wheels. Not really even worth mentioning considering its such a small change. If you max out the stock turbo on an N55 or a B58, you're going with a turbo with much bigger sized Turb/Comp Wheels...

They are the same exact engine except one is 4 cylinder and one is 6 cylinder.

awesome videos but reliability turned out atrocious esp accessing the rear of the engine. Too many VINs replaced. No surprise, BMW B58TU1 is essentially almost a new engine, reinforcing cylinder walls, simplifying the serpentine functions and overall 30 less moving parts. And more, changes so substantial that tell us the original B overreached. there were DD simple folks with smoking replaced engines, RIP B58 after only 2 years. And shame BMW for trying to compete power figures with AMG..

@Simply Car Things BMW forums, e.g. f30bimmerpost, f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1292652. Some members went as far as listing entire VIN recall (as in replaced) lists, bulletins. Problems started early on for 340i members- definitely a scale unseen on the N55, and even less so on the pre-turbo generations. As I read through the original posts, took a 1 year break and went back reading, and the list of issues (cracked turbos etc) went on and on. X3 owners got hit to. Some forum members warned in 2018, that they foresaw problems. These appeared confirmed. Push the car, and the engine will not last- and not discussing tuned cars. No surprise, as soon as I read the TU1 update it predictably matched the bulletins and the chief owner complaints. In the end, the TU1 update is significant enough to call it the B58 that SHOULD have been released, not chasing AMG's tail. Take the closed deck figures. People forget that 360Hp and above are supercar figures, the supercars of 10-15 years ago. Well, as closed as that deck was, it turned out fragile. Crankshaft in the TU1 will be forged- high difference versus flow formed. As closed as the deck was, and heavier, its metallurgy and critical area thickness was not enough in key areas. With the TU1 modifications (a new engine essentially) we are now talking proper race tech that the B58 able to handle the boost and temperature and thermodynamic forces that the B58 could not handle. BMW was thus unusually Honda-ish like in its B58 design and release. They took S class engine tech and diluted it down. Traditionally, they build upwards (N55, S55) etc. It really was the drastically sales pressure and competition with AMG that forced their hand to push it though as the LCI. either case, they learned their lessons, I just hope people bought the 6 years warranty.. But no, these will not come close to the N55 bulletproof reliability..

At 5 minutes and the quote that air to water charge coolers being better in high performance cars isn’t accurate. The air to air inter cooler on track is far better because it is positioned directly in a high flow direction of air and the greater surface area can cool the act’s quickly compared to a charge cooled setup which does have a few areas that are going to make it more consistent for a performance road car and that’s the generally more compact size and placement as it can take up less room and the water cooled design is better in traffic and urban driving where the airflow to the front of the car is blocked by other vehicles and not moving even temporarily allows the act’s to increase. But I’m making the point that in the highest performance terms front mount air to air coolers are more effective and the water cooled charge coolers on a road car are more efficient

Lost all credibility when you said n55 didn’t have forged parts. Bmw themselves on there website and many press releases said n54/55 came with forged cranks from factory. And that’s it. All 3 gens of n55 and 4 gens of n54 have forged cranks.

@@lovepreetkular2264 all n55b30 motors have forged cranks and those came in most of all the bmw n55 cars. 2012 335is had a b20 series which was a testing period and had forged rods and crank then they realized they didn’t need forged rods.

good no open deck is just a cheap ass bad way of doing thing its like a timber frame vs a stick built house no real good engine has ever been made with open n liner less cylinders they just will not last a long time bmw twin terdblow v8 is a great example of this crap 150,000 miles ill bet its burning oil . open decks and bs plasma aluminumspayed seal or what ever coating they lie and say is a good replacement for iron cylinder liners

With the knowledge gained from the n54, once the dme is cracked the b58 will make great power... but at the end of the day, you'll be able to pick up an n54 335i for under 10k and put 10k into it and make 700whp no problem.

youve got to cut the belly cord to the n54. obviously it was and is a great motor. but newer motors and concepts doesnt mean its bad(im sure the technicans at bmw knows a whole lote more about engines(especially theirs) than the average Joe like you Pat Iwan ). eventually when the tuners get their hands on it for real im sure in a near future people will embrace the B58 as the best so far.
