BMW E24 635CSi - 0-230km/h Acceleration

My all original 85' 635CSi flat out from a standstill.
4-speed automatic transmission and 3.07 Limited slip differential make for some serious speed in each gear. Not that good for acceleration, but comfortable when cruising at higher speeds. This got the EH transmission with the Sport/Economy/3-2-1 modes. I think it was in the economy mode when I shot this video.

You haven't got the fastest, but you definitely got the nicest. I love the 850csi better, and maybe the batmobile E9, but... I would have a very very hard time choosing if I had this 635csi in front of me. And in my opinion, if you'd ask 1,000 people who haven't seen any car in their whole lives, the majority would chose this one to be the best looking thing they've ever seen, for sure!

John Callaghan I like the 850csi and the E9 a lot, I wouldn't have said no to owning one of each. But the 850csi is more than double the price of a 635csi (except the M635csi maybe) and the E9's are hard to come by that aren't rusted to death. And a well preserved E9 will be as expensive as an 850csi, or even double that if it's an original batmobile. But they are definitely cars I'd like to own, if I had the time and money. I could afford a 850ci or a csi even, but I would have to let go of the 635csi then, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to do that.

Of course, but I have several other cars with manual so I think it's nice to have a car with automatic as well. This is just my summer cruiser and the automatic does a great job on these cars (lots of torque down low) so I don't mind :) I have other cars for spirited driving.

Lately I've found myself very fond of this model. Long time ago someone gave me a lift in a 635, and I was suprised with the ride and comfort. His was in full Alpina bodykit with 18' rims. Plus, I don't think the auto box makes you any slower in the corners, it just makes the driving more relaxed.

Yes, they are very comfortable and relaxed cars to drive, lot's of torque down low and low rpm's at speed, sharp handling for their age. Not to mention the nostalgic sound of the engine. Normally it's just a quiet deep rumble, but when you step on it, it's growling at you. This car got an M635CSi frontspoiler, and stock rubber trunklid spoiler. I have a 628CSi as well, with complete M635CSi bodykit, front and rear + sideskirts and trunklid spoiler. But that car is in need of some mechanical work before I can use it.

Super mais pardon, j'étais à 250 au GPS, 260 bloqués au compteur, et 30 litres bloqués aussi à l'économiseur. avec ma 628csi et le son était bien moins rocailleux que la 635csi. J'aurais pu faire mieux mais je savais ce qu'elle valait. ( Great but sorry, I was at 250 on the GPS, 260 blocked on the speedometer, and 30 liters also blocked on the saver. with my 628csi and the sound was much less gritty than the 635csi. I could have done better but I knew what she was worth)

Manual or auto and was it down hill? I have a 628csi too, and it's considerably slower than the 635csi. I have had 250km/h on the speedometer in the 635csi previously. But the 2.8 can be fast too, with some mods. Camshaft and exhaust mods will make them more lively, and they tend to be more rev happy than the 3.4 since they have shorter stroke.

It's a 4 speed automatic. Enjoy it a lot actually, it's a comfortable cruiser with lots of torque down low and long gears. I have a 628csi with 4 speed automatic aswell, that's slightly underpowered and should have been a manual trans car. Also have a 745i turbo, with a 5 speed manual.

Superbe 👍..cette BMW série 6....pas besoin d'une dsg.7/8/9🤣..une boîte automatique a convertisseur de couple a 4 rapports.. c'était le Top..en 1977 / 1978 La BMW 633 CSI n'avait que 3 rapports de boîte automatique...😂.. assurément une des meilleures grande routière de cette periode..fluide et confortable...superbe automobile 👍...la 635 CSI a coiffé la gamme..avant la M635.. Sur les autoroutes..de préférence allemande..😂.très peu de voiture pouvaient la suivre la cadence a cette époque...Le 220km/h était sa vitesse de croisière, les sportives lâchaient prise au bout de 15 minutes...les Mercedes S.. suivaient...les rares Opel commodore 6 cylindres aussi ...et bien sur la Porsche 928... Malheureusement la consommation a cette vitesse..obligeait un ravitaillement tous les 350 km...🤣.... La série 7 equipé des même moteurs était extra aussi ....mais la beauté de la carrosserie revient a la série 6..plus désirable mais plus chère... d'où sa diffusion plus limité... C'est du vécu ...👍mes parents ayant concervé cette voiture de nombreuses années..au regard de ses qualités incroyables..et du plaisir de la conduire....bonne route a tous 👋👋

@@gokturk232 nope, got one in automatic as well. The early versions had a 3 speed gearbox but the ones after had a 4 speed gearbox from ZF. If you keep it in sport it will never shift into 4th otherwise if you floor it even with kickdown it'll be in 4th at around 200kph.

@@jonathanparle8429 No, it actually does 100km/h in first. It does about 250km/h in third, that's the most I have ever had with this car. It shift to fourth when I let off the throttle. If it had enough power it would do more than 300km/h in fourth. This thing got really tall gears. Cruising at 200km/h on the autobahn in fourth is about 4000rpm if I remember it correctly.

@@Enko063 It's an early version of a electronic speedometer. If you floor it from a standstill there's a delay until it picks up the signal, thats why it jumps to 20km/h right away. The car usually starts moving before the speedometer does on these cars. Of course they aren't as sophisticated as cars that are 30-40 years newer, but it doesn't mean they are less accurate at speed though. Todays cars also show a higher speed than a gps would, it just varies with brand and model how much. I have seen modern electric cars show 10km/h more than a gps would, so It's not just older cars that do this. Manufacturers do this on purpose for liability reasons.

Not as a NA engine, speedometer stops at 240-250km/h on the autobahn, or about 230-240km/h according to the GPS. But with a turbo it should be possible to reach 300km/h. In theory this car should do 340km/h or more in fourth, if the engine were able to. Gear ratio is definitely ment for the autobahn, it keep's the rpm low at higher speeds.

nice top end speed and demonstration that 3.07 ratio diff with 1st gear is way to long. have u thought about going up to a 3.91 diff ratio for beter acceleration off the mark.

stellios Stakos No, this is my summer cruiser. Cruising at higher speeds at low revs are very comfortable. I have an E23 with turbo and manual transmission for acceleration and top speed and a turbo mx5 for the more spirited driving. I like having a car for each purpose :)

I still have it, it's reliable as long as it's getting serviced. But it's a 30+ year old car, so it will need some fixing every now and then. I use it only in the summer, I don't daily it.

Most cars show a bit more than actual speed, I guess you'd get slower numbers with proper measuring equipment. It may not have been 100% flat in that area.

I have other bmw's and a mazda trackday car with manual transmission, so I actually prefer the 635 to be automatic. I only use this car in the summer when the weather is good, and mostly just cruise around with it. These transmissions are comfortable and shift very smooth when they are working properly. I like how it's handling the torque down low, without the need to rev it that much. Doesn't most M30 E34's have getrag 260 in them, except M5 that have getrag 280? Getrag 260 is a rather weak gearbox, wouldn't recommend it for spirited driving or turbo applications.
