This is a great example of a proper engine swap, engine and chasis are designed together, you can't take any engine and put it in any car and end up with a good preforming car, it's a lot more work than people think. Edit: Additionally, yes it does seem pointless to tear apart an m3 chasis when ultimitley with all the work they did, it woulda been the same with even a 318
@dokterkarel5 жыл бұрын
Some people strip their entire car to it's naked chassis, but this dude even tore apart half his chassis to rebuilt it. How much time did this project take? I bet more than 2 days ... :D Btw, 1 word: respect!

Stunning level of skill involved in this and those who complain about a M3 being used probably never had one. If you did you would know the S14 was crap. Had over 40 of them incl Evo 1 & 2 and back in late 90s swapped several S38 into them. It had the balance and looks but never the go. Did a few with S52 and that was the sweet spot. The S85 is the best M engine and I would squeeze it into any BMW possible if I was still doing that. This car is how it should be done when money is no object. Kudos to all involved.

It pains me to see this beautiful, rare, iconic car being axed and cut to leave nothing original about it!! ... I don't see any sense in doing this other than it's an M3 and after all of this work is still an M3 because it still has the M3 VIN.. I would do all of this work to a normal e30 coupe and yet save the original one to then pass it to my children.. None the less, this final piece of car is amazing.

@Boris_V4 жыл бұрын
First of all buddy, don't go around calling people dumb whilst talking like a fucking cartoon. Second, no, an M3 might not be very rare, but a good one is still worth 50 to 60k. Whilst you can pick up a simple 316i for a 1000. There was no reason to use an M3 for this project whatsoever. Other than the shell, which they then heavily modified they didn't use any of the M3 parts. For the amount they modified the shell they might as well have used a 316 and made it look like an M3, it wouldn't have been that much more work. I'm guessing this project cost them around 200k. Well that could've been 150k, if they didn't ruin an M3 for it. Third, no this is not how they would do it in the factory in Germany. They way they put in the suspension might be very nicely done. But I'm pretty sure they didn't do any proper measurements or strength calculations on that. And whilst I'm pretty sure this is strong enough and the car will handle fine, in the factory in Germany they could've done it better.

That's Piper Motorsports. Located in northern Virginia. Funny story. Several years ago, I needed a cage built for a Nissan Sentra SE-R road race car. I towed my Nissan about 3.5 hours to that shop. It was stripped down to a rolling shell. It was a little beat up when I bought it and I have to tell you..... my car looked way out of place to the GT3's, Vettes, M3's and other incredible hardware that they were working on. But that ended up being a good thing. I was told on the phone before they saw my car that they would have my cage done in 3-4 weeks. But after it got there, they called me back in about 4 days saying that they were done. I can only imagine that they wanted my POS out of there ASAP. LOL!

While i agree that ruining an M3 for a project like this is stupid, the weight distribution is nowhere near being that bad. The chassis came with m20 engines which are only 65 kg lighter than an s85 because m20 is an iron block engine. Also the m20 is longer (6 cyl long) so even though the s85 is heavier(5 cyl long), its closer to the center of the car due to it's V design.

Awesome build but why a stroker instead of overbore? I would think with the stroker that piston speeds increase calling for a reduction in rpm limit. Yes, more torque definitely but with an overbore you get to keep the higher rpm’s which is where V10’s and V12’s are really appreciated. And you get more hp.

Mighty impressive cost is no object build. The fabrication, execution, and craftwork of this project was like a work of art in progress. I'm sure it's a fun track car although I'd be concerned about excessive nose heaviness. I'd say there will always be more power than the rear tires can use as the car can likely break traction in 5th gear (at 100+mph!). I've been thinking more regarding light weight. The E30 and E30M3 are nice "compact" cars creating a great start for a light weight project. Were the M3 hoods and trunk lids already carbon fiber? If not they need to be. Go for CF front fenders. Same for the sun roof if the car has one. Forget the heavy V10, heck, forget the I-6s with their heavy cast iron blocks. Simply go with a turbo on that M3 engine. But what about a modern direct fuel injected all aluminum V6? Blasphemy? Yes. But then one keeps the weight down, the mass back away from the front wheel line, retains a nice level of smoothness, and if one could fit a dry sump could even lower the block further into the chassis. Brakes? Source carbon ceramic rotors and machine to fit. Attach with aluminum hats. That will save a good 8 lbs per corner of unsprung and lower rotating inertia mass. Light weight calipers for sure, but on a light car they don't have to be huge (more weight savings). Stay with the theme and install very light weight forged wheels. Let's not leave the corners yet. Go with titanium springs. Carbon Fiber drive shaft? Yes. Anyone see that Alfaholics GTV? Alfaholics is supplying CF doors! Anything like that available available in the BMW after market? That would be a nice additional reduction in weight. Lithium/Ion/Phosphate battery? I think they are mature enough now. That's a big reduction in battery weight, plus when located in the engine bay will save on a long heavy gauge battery cable. Oh yeah, titanium exhaust from the headers to the rear tip. I don't know enough about these cars, but wonder if the front sway bar can go hollow? And of course, CF seats. But keep an interior so the car can be enjoyed more than just on a race track. Heck, with that much weight reduction I'm thinking the stock E30M3 4cyl is plenty good enough. Any thoughts E30 enthusiasts?
