Another fantastic restoration! One item everyone seems to miss on these though: check the throttle shaft needle bearing seals for air leaks, people. The factory bearings are single seal designs and almost all start leaking a pretty good amount of unmeasured air into the intake, preventing your M20 from idling completely smoothly and impacting your MPG. The bearings come out and there's a company that makes a dual seal replacement but you need a bearing puller, blow torch and patience.

Oh and for the mating surfaces (TB to intake plenum or the little throttle body-heating-pipe) lay down a glass plate, tape on some medium to fine grid wet emery paper (400 up to 800) and do circular-8 motions. As you might see the discoloration at 12:58 the surface is not flush.

Free tip for adjusting the throttle position sensor: When closing the throttle in rest position you should hear a light click in the black box. This way the ECU knows it closed and it adjusts several parameters. Most importantly it actuates the stepper motor for idling the engine . This will make your engine idle smooth. Awesome job!

Awesome job!!! I watch mesmerized many of your videos, even this one that is a little bit old, still hooked on the E30 project of yours... Few things that I can point out that could improve your restoration: 1.- tap out the screw-holes and studs if you plan to keep/re-use them, as well as cleaning the pits of holes. This will improve the removal of the screws later on and reduces the chance of cross-threading or even worse, bottoming out the screw and making a hole or deforming the piece and the end of the screw. 2.- when doing pieces that have gaskets/flat seals, sand them with a flat piece of sandpaper on a block of wood or table (something stiff) to make a new plane so the gasket fits much better. 3.- Bolt down that grinder! It's dangerous already with the speed and you working directly on it with your hands, also I don't know if you use a face shield but in the videos, there is no shield in front of what you are doing. 4.- for sensors/electrical connections, try to use CRC cleaner even to clean the outside, you never know if a drop of degreaser with junk can fall into a crevice and stuff-up your sensor.

The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) at 10:20, has a specific rigged position with regards to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). It needs to be properly positioned on the throttle body during installation (10:58). That is the reason why the mounting holes on the tabs are elongated to allow for small adjustments. I think this can only be achieved by the dedicated workshops with proper equipment for the BMW engine tuning. The "stopper" (13:45), must also have a locknut to prevent it from drifting away.

13:50 Now I'm not an E30 expert, but after some googleing I think that's the throttle stop adjuster. According to my search it should touch the throttle arm and then 1/4th of a turn in. The whole reason behind this stop is to prevent the butterfly valve to hit the body every time you close the throttle. Also I doubt this needs loctite :)

I have been looking everywhere for a video or even pictures of the m20 throttle body taken apart. This is the only place I found it. Thanks for making this video! The reason I'm searching so hard is because my throttle body has a vacuum leak. Air is getting between the butterfly shaft that protrudes through the bottom and the top of the TB. I wanted to see if there were any rubber seals or O rings hidden under the spring on the top of the TB before taking mine apart. Were there any seals I didn't see in the video? I was hoping I can replace some O rings to fix the problem before junking it and getting another one.
