Hello Timm, thank you for all the valuable knowledge you've shared over the years!! Just 1 question: is it not necessary to fill the oil housing with fresh oil before putting in the new filter?

Thanks! No, if you pour oil into the reservoir it will go straight into the engine as there is a release valve at the bottom!

Been driving with bmw full synthetic 10w60 oil for 4 years previous owner told me he was on that oil for 3years so kept going with that with no problems. Should i change or continue with that one? I don’t drive that car in the winter only summer the car as never really drive in winter if that makes any difference

Hi Timm, your videos are an amazing resource, you are my go to expert! I have a 97 840ci which is being revived from several years of storage. I used 0 40w synthetic oil though, is that not recommended?

Hi Timm, it's always nice to see your informative information. I have a 735i e38 from 2000, with the m62tub engine. It has the genuine MAP controlled thermostat, and running pretty hot at Summer season, approx 104C on the OBD, and approx 10 degrees colder in Winter. So only due to this, I've chosen to use a good fully synthetic 5w-50 oil all year round, instead of the recommended 30 or 40, as I believe it lubricates better, and helps prolong the life of the chain guides. It's been running great for the couple of years of ownership. I change the oil and filter once a year, driving only approx 5.500 miles during the whole year. What's your opinion on this 50 oil, is it too thick for this kind of engine, could it possibly block any oil passages due to thicker weight?

I would prefer to retain the same oil weight, the small oilways may well slow the delivery of oil to things like the Vanos solenoids....

Hi Timm, would you recommend a 5W40 fully synth oil for higher viscosity at running temp? What's the main reason you go for 10W? Do you find the higher viscosity at cold temps helps with warm up noise?

Hello Ed, I went with a higher viscosity to reduce the valve noise at high revs. It really is a horrible sound, and I threw away the 5W40 after just a week on my first oil change because of the noise, and went with the 10W40 which quietened it down a bit!
