BMW E39 Guard Rolling DIY & Tyre Problems: Are 19s Too BIG?
With less than 24 hours before we plan to leave, we got the guards rolled on the 540i ready to be loaded up for the trip. However we had a very unwelcome surprise once we got the rear wheel off.....
This is the guard roller i purchased. - ebay.to/2TOugR9 It says it ships from Australia and i did get it pretty quickly from memory. If you are based in the states this is the same item from Amazon amzn.to/2XauQux .

Just want to point out, that you have to put something below the wheel.bearing knuckle part whatever it is, and either lower the car to make it sit like the wheel sits, so you can roll your fender right way. Not soing excess work by not adjusting the fender roler

I had the same problem,in order to fix it, I purchased the original rims designed to be used for the car.

I truly hope your trip goes without issues! I can't see any problem driving these cars longer distances when they are cared for

Yes, it should be fine. This was serviced about 6 weeks ago. Mind you thats when the tyres were last checked...... surprised it got burnt through so quickly hehe. Just loading the car as we speak, so should be on the road shortly.

Hey Guys, just a point that you may wish to look into, My 2001 540 M sport has 19'' x 245x35's on it and I have the same scrubbing issue you had on the inner walls of your tires! Turns out that the lower section of the rear spring contacts the inner part of the tire when it is travelling in the arc it moves through during loading and unloading. You saw how the wheel travels away from the outer guard after you flared them, well problem is with 19's that movement transitions the wheel to rub on the lower spring coils at the top part of its travel which needles to say does eventually damage the tire to a point where it is unsafe to use...…..Bit of a bugger when rest of your rubber is pretty much OK, but it isn't something you tend to notice until you go down a big dip or over a substantial bump, only to find the inner part of your side wall has now got a nice rip through it courtesy of the ware caused by the constant rubbing of the spring coil on your inside rubber. You can confirm this issue by checking the springs as they will have the paint worn of them on those points that contact the tire...……….I replaced my stock M sport springs with a coil over kit which had substantially narrower rear spring diameter's …….Problem solved and it looks a lot nicer being slammed every now and then when I drop her down...…...good luck with the trip...and lets hope those nasty BMW plastic cooling system parts hold up for you! :)

We did check that with we fitted these wheels on the blue car, but would definitely be worth looking in to again just in case.

I’ve never done this job but wouldn’t you set up the hub to a road level position instead of a no-load setup. The radius size would be be the same but the radius would be in a different plane and the gaps would be a lot nicer when the cars on its wheels. ????
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
I guess that would be ideal. Well ideally set the hub where it would sit in the bottomed our position. But with the spring in place it’s difficult/sketchy to be working around the area while it’s all under tension. What we find is to just work on the areas of the guard that stick out and that normally gives clearance needed. Even the matter of the wheel arch not being the same circular shape as the wheel comes in to play with the areas you need to work on.

Hi, is the tube you remove at 5:42 (that you reinstall at 16:44) really important? Can I drive without connecting it? I inadvertently reassembled everything without reassembling this tube and I'm worried it's really important.

How wide are those tires? What’s the widest wheels and tires you can fit on an e39 if I wanted to do a staggered fitment? For an e39

I wanted to upgrade to m5 wheels on my bmw e39 530i 2001 but didn't know what size wheels will be suitable. Any chance someone can help?
@komentatorius69
@komentatorius69 7 ай бұрын
Sure. If youre oem everything 265 might rub in the back under very heavy load. Also probably depends on tire manufacturer. If you dont want any hassle probably go with 255/35? Fronts i did 235/40 with reara being 265. If rear wheels are 255/35 fronts should be 225/40.

Could you of taken the bolt on wheel spacers off just for the trip?
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, but the guards needed to be rolled, this was a good excuse to stop putting it off and with them rolled, they fit really nicely.

You absolutely destroyed the wheel arch, poor job, that will rust out like hell, sorry guys but, I would not be happy if that was the finished result on my car.

So I got a 530i witt 17’ do I need to get fender rolling if I want 19’ or no ?? Does your car rub wen it hits bumps or a loaded car??
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what offset and tyre width you go for. With out getting in to the numbers, these will rub if the car is fully loaded with 5 people and luggage. This trip we were prepping for where we were towing a trailer and only had 2 people in the car it did not rub. If you want it to look good and have decent fitment, its pretty safe to say you will have to roll the guards.

would it not have been easier to find other wheels?
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
It would have been, like the original ones I have sitting here 🤣 . But these wheels are the look I want on the car. So the guards needed to be rolled at some point. It’s not too bad, we took our time marking sure no paint was stretched too much in one go.

Lol, what's the glory in that? Sure a person can put the original wheels on, but then you're not Bling'n it bro!! Asides, I mean, besides, this is a great tutorial for us e39'ers no matter what continent we live on. I'm watching these guys roll the fenders because after I finish writing my essay here to you, I've got to go tackle my 530i with the Series 95 rims and 265/ 35s in back. I'll most likely leave the plastic but clean the lip valley. Out here in Arizona, it's over 105F, so I may not need a heat gun (although I will have one plugged in and ready). Ok, wish me luck, and thanks for the vid!!!
