The BMW E46 is the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series, which was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1997 to 2006. The E46 was available in sedan, coupé, convertible, station wagon and hatchback body styles. The latter has been marketed as the Compact.
In tune with BMW's core values regarding handling dynamics, the E46 was initially available with a rear-wheel drive, front-engine layout and a 50/50 weight distribution. All-wheel drive, which was last available in the E30, was reintroduced for the E46 on some models. Six cylinder engines (M52 & M54) are the best for drifting, with plenty of torque and power to spin those rear tires even in naturally aspirated form.
While the E30 3-Series has become somewhat of a collectible, the E46 has become cheap enough where drifters have begun to adopt the platform as well. It is slightly heavier than the E36, but just as balanced as the previous generation. And it is easy to upgrade thanks to the extensive offer of aftermarket parts. This car would be a good low cost entry into the world of drifting; it is possible to build this car for drift for less than 5,000 dollars. And if you decide to get into professional drifting, the E46 is a very good platform as it has a very competitive chassis. If your budget is higher, a BMW M3 E46 is a good option; it has a powerful naturally aspirated straight-6 engine (S54B32) and a limited-slip differential (LSD) from factory, perfect for drifting. With solid German engineering underpinning every aspect of the car, high performing naturally aspirated engines and great looks it is no big surprise that the E46 became a great drifting platform. #E46 #Drift #Drifting
