Very well-done video for a DIYer that enjoys maintaining his beloved E46 Coupe! This is a question to FCP Euro about cleaning up the mess left by a leaky OFH gasket: Can the Oil Filter Housing be disassembled and safely immersed in cleaning solution (even the acidic "Purple" stuff) to fully soak and clean the exterior of the housing body? Specifically, I'm curious about removing the (2) Torx-70 plugs (and what's behind them), and the plastic pressure valve (shown in the video at 19:57). I have compressed air to blow solvent out of any passages after cleaning.

Best video out there for this job. The pressure switch in the housing - why is this the first I've ever seen or heard of it? I just changed my oil (LM), not keen on dumping it. Can this be done w/out changing oil? I don't see why not, as oil level in sump is lower than the filter housing port. Loosen filter cap to drain any into sump, and maybe I'll loose 2-300ml, but don't see why (E39 - M52TU)

For anyone watching this a couple of years later.. The gasket problem will persist so long as it's made from the same material (which I believe is ACM, but it could be NBR) and it still goes hard and falls apart. I've bought a new genuine one direct from BMW in 2021. and after just 13 000 km and less than 2 years it sprung a leak because it didn't have the adequate compression set resistance or the ability to handle high temp cycles. And no, it wasn't any of the common errors during install such as not cleaning the channel properly, pinching the gasket or inadequately torquing the OFH. just a quick question. i discovered oil in my coolant tank (bmw x5 e53 3.0i) isit possible that the oil filter housing gasket has been worn?
@fcpeuro2 жыл бұрын
Hi Allan, while that is not usually what happens, there is always the chance that the inner portion of the gasket has degraded to an extreme over the outside of the gasket, causing the intermix to happen. Before the worst is assumed, a compression test and leak down test should be performed to rule out a possible head gasket/cracked head issue.

Saga, you can attempt to rethread the stud with a tap and die set. If the unit is serviceable, you may be able to replace the regulator itself if the post is contained on it. Otherwise, you may want to look into a replacement.
@doofwop4 жыл бұрын
BMW TIS has the 6 M8s for the OFHG at 22Nm. So yes there is a torque spec. Also, you are recommending replacing a lot of items that do NOT need replacing. I understand you are in the parts selling business, but this is excessive. The six M8s do NOT need replacement. Those bolts will NOT corrode. The banjo bolts do not need replacement. EVER. VANOS line maybe, but you are treating it as always. The sensors don't need replacement unless they have failed, you do not need to replace them "while you are in there" they are easily replaceable with everything buttoned up. Those rarely fail, if ever.
@SmartsmileGT3 жыл бұрын
okay I understand the bolts not needing to be replaced but the banjos do have an oil passage so whats the hurt in replacing them? also the VANOS line is a BMW oil line it should be replaced 100%. And isnt replacing any sensors reasonable? the coolant temp sensor and level sensor are known to fail right?
@murphworks3 жыл бұрын
Can’t hurt to replace these things, especially if it’s a high mileage motor
@blackpassenger2 жыл бұрын
yeh, i was wondering about that. im in the process of replacing my OFHG too, but my car (2000 320) only has 60k miles on it (im in japan), so i was wondering if i should change those sensors. But then again, even though the car has low miles, it IS 23 years old.

you should really add a notice to this video, since the torque spec in TIS is specified and its maybe the most important part of the whole job to the the torque correct and not having missalignment - especially if the person doing the job doesnt have that much of experience! The oil leaks problem is NOT BECAUSE it is BMW. Problem is dealership who is changing your oil. Usually dealers put 7bottles of oil into E46 engine. If you check the level, you will see how high it is on the dip stick. When I put 6 bottles it is on the MAX. 7 bottles is too much for that engine. The high RPM create high pressure inside of the engine and that oil pressure is trying to escape from it. All seals are not classified for that pressure and create leaks. So, the bottom of the line. Do not overfill your engine with the oil.
@ve24302 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. I change my own oil properly on my 2003 bmw for over 15 years and still get oil leaks. It's because they use these silly rubber gaskets that turn to plastic over time. My old Nissan used metal gaskets as I'm sure Toyota uses as well and they don't have leaks as often as bmw.

I finally found a robust, well made replacement connector for the piece of garbage plastic connectors being used in BMW Vacuum Lines. These GARBAGE connectors OUTGASS, BECOME BRITTLE, CRACK, LOSE TOLERANCES, in as little as 3 to 4 years of ownership of your new BMW. They are a real pain in the ass because they must be dealt with when you are servicing other parts of the engine. AND THEY WILL BREAK when handling them by you or the mechanic working on the car. They are ONE of the many causes of LEAN CONDITIONS, LIMP MODE, and ADDITIONAL unneccessary COSTS when working on the engine. Do yourself a favor and use these connectors and you will never have to buy new ones again. The best part is you can find these connectors rated for: 1. Very high temperatures, >200 DEGREES FARENHEIT! 2. Rated for HIGH PRESSURE 3. RATED for OIL, GAS & many other corrosive liquids. 4. Are made of TOUGH, ROBUST Plastic and Metal. 5. Much better design mechanism to CONNECT & DISCONNECT. 6. OH AND THE COST!!! How does spending ONCE ONLY ~$25 for both the bayonet (Male) & receptacle (Female) for each end of the hose/ pipe/ tube. 7. They are made with a BARBED end to slide easily and grip securely inside a hose/ pipe/ tube in many many diameters, 2" to 1/4" 8. They also come with a Threaded end in many Thread Pitches, Metric & Standard dimensions. Just a MILLION TIMES better made than the GARBAGE, ORIGINAL, OEM German design. There is only one catch they are ugly as all hell. But, they will out last the car!!! They are Type-E & Type-C Camlock Connectors. Do yourself a favor and replace the garbage that came with the car and never have to replace another connector again.
