Is the BMW E60 Rod Bearing failure overhyped?
Should you replace them preventatively and at what mileage?
Is there any value in getting an oil analysis done?

Great advice. Typically, I change cars like most guys change underwear. I bought a 2006 E60 M5 in 2022 for $17,000. It had 6 prior owners and 78,000 miles. Even though it ran well and sounded ok, in an abundance of caution, I had the rod bearings replaced and the vanos pump and high pressure line changed out. I change the oil every 3,000 miles (with 10w 60 - which may or may not be a mistake). The car has purred like a kitten and growled like a lion (in M mode) and been an absolute joy to own. There have been a few modules that have gone out and other minor issues. The decision was fiscally irresponsible and stupid (I have about $50,000 into a car worth about $25,000). However, I'd do it over again and again. I absolutely LOVE that car.

Thanks for sharing, good greeting the rod bearings sorted with the uncertainty there of 6 previous owners. They are a phenomenal car, I’ve owned mine for 5 years and like it more and more the longer I own it. That’s a reasonable maintenance investment you have there (modules aren’t cheap!) but there’s much worse things to spend your money on!

I have a California E60 M5. My rod bearings failed after putting about 25k miles on it. I bought the car used with 50K miles on it. I don't know what the previous owner did to it but I made the mistake of following the factory oil service recommendations. I had no clue about the rod bearing issues before I bought the vehicle. I was able to find someone (TroyJeup.com) who rebuilds these engines without spending 25k on the engine . Thx Troy!

The factory service intervals certainly have contributed to unnecessary wear on many M5 V10’s I reckon. Stick to 5,000 mile oil change intervals with the rebuilt engine 👍

This is a great video and the only reason it popped up is because I searched for actual cases of rod bearing failure via Google and could not find one single case! This was mainly done as I smelt a rat with the bearing theory a long time back. The simple answer to do these or other M engines have common failure and the answer is no! Of corse there is always the odd exception but cars with no or poor maintenance records answer the question for you in this case.. Maintained at regular intervals there a tons of these still soldering round with in excess of 100k.. As per usual it’s internet hype which has panicked people and made techs thousands of pounds. Coincidence? I think not.

Hi again👍Its almost all about historic maintain of the car and how the owner used it. Its a car that has the owner specter from the worst to the best and the engine makes the drivers want high revs to hear sound and feel preformance. Bad maintain and use with high revs on cold w60 oil = failure... But if you change them even if the car is used gentle, you are still gone sleep better👍😅 Thanks for the video👍

I had mine priced for the future: Rod bearings ( APL plus bolts ) Engine mounts Vanos pipe..... £2000 This was from a guy that replaced my throttle actuators nearly two years ago for ( £620 ) which was a great price , I know 2k is a lot of money to lay out for some people but when you consider what this car is with that v10 engine plus your future proofing the car for years and years to come then it’s quite a good deal plus their becoming collectible future classics now .... it’s a no brainier. PS: a sobering thought for you guys , a similar car in power and speed from the mid two thousands say a Ferrari , research a clutch or gearbox or maybe a bottom end change then you know what I’m talking about .... Personally, I believe with all my heart, it's a maintenance issue, and previous owner neglect, proper warm up, proper oil etc. I have two, both 2006, both smg's. One I knew the previous owner since new, took care of it, I checked rod bearings at 75,000 miles. One had a tiny scuff.

My thought on that is, if you read posts, many people don't want to pay the money 10w60 oil costs, so they make excuses [stock V10] and use different grades of oil, BMW gives a ridiculous mileage between changes, like 15K I believe. They don't warm the V10 up properly before taking it 8K rpms, In other words they abuse them for awhile, then sell them to unsuspecting customers. 2nd or 3rd buyer ends up buying an abused, and neglected car @@KubanKevin

I am the original owner of a 2007 M6 e64. Never had a problem except a voltage regulator failure (intermittent). Diagnosis disaster that led to $6.5k repair because the dealer just kept changing sensors, etc. I believe the real issue is as the price came down, young guys jumped in their cold car and started showing off. We got our M5 at 54k kms, replaced the rod bearings at 61k kms as insurance paid 70% of the bill. The bearings are ok, but worn enough to make a claim. Car didn’t have any issues but we inquired if it will be covered. they said yes if it has signs beyond normal wear. Luckily it was worn enough, but I think it may still safe to use for 10-30k kms more. My friends M5 had about 140k kms, his bearings are worn but no issues. There are enough people who have lunched their VANOS pumps with bits of bearing. Rod bearings have to get really bad before they fail on their own - it's all the material going around damaging other parts that cause expensive failures. I had the rod bearings replaced on mine at 100K and the bearings were quite bad, down to the copper in many places, but fortunately they hadn't fragmented so the car lives on. I bought the car prepared and budgeted to do the work.

I had injector failure on mine and it chewed the bottom end up. Still got me home but it was rough as. Bought another engine and had shells done as a mater of course before fitting it. I also bought a new set of Bosch injectors. I don't take it past 3k or put it under load stress until it's warmed up. The engine and bearings cost me 6.5k. Fitted it myself and just done the NC500 in Scotland. I've done over 6k trouble free miles with the car. Far from putting me off I love the car more than ever. And let's be realistic, it's basically an everyday supercar. You'll spend upwards of 4x what these cost to go as fast or have that many cylinders. It's NOT an ordinary car and you got to treat it with care to see the best from it

I will add though, having the rod bearings replaced is a good peace of mind but more importantly will make it much easier to sell the car if it has higher mileage. My friend had his 6 speed manual m5 with 130k miles for sale for over a year and no one would buy it after finding out the rod bearings weren’t done. You would think being a manual, someone would’ve quickly bought it and just spend the $2500 to change out the bearings. But people are too scared. He ended up having to sell the car for extremely cheap because it would NOT sell.

After seeing a bunch of particles in my oil filter housing I genuinely freeked out and my heart dropped. I drove the car very gently 4 times in the past 6 months because of it. I then saw m539’s video when he tore apart the engine. The chunks of metal I saw in my filter were exactly the same as what he had. His bearings looked fine with 146k miles. The metal fragments and shavings came from his pump. I have 99k miles on my car so I’m now done worrying about my rod bearings. I’m going to think about the pump now. lol. Jesus it doesn’t end cheap with these cars. He spent around 10k euros on all the parts. Sadly I don’t think I can afford that. If I’m in there replacing my pump, then might as well do the bearings. I’m not fortunate enough to have my own lift so I’d have to pay a shop. The e60 M5 is a toxic relationship. You want to get out of it but you can’t.

It’s possibly not your pump, more likely rod bearing material. You can get a basic rod bearing replacement, new vanos hp line & pump inspection done for much less than €10k. It just depends how much extra stuff you want to do while your in there. New vanos pump isn’t cheap though!

Had my bearings done at 61k purely for piece of mind. The bearings certainly weren’t the worst the specialist had seen but some were down to the copper and was worth while changing them out. I had the fuel injectors and filter replaced and the tank cleaned out at the same time as there are some stories of hydro locked engines due to injectors getting stuck open. All done for my own piece of mind and the M5 should be good for at least another 80k miles with the proper treatment and enhanced maintenance intervals.

My 2005 E60 M5 is on 104,000 miles and my rod bearings have replaced twice. Once on 83,000 before I owned the car, and I had a small hole in the oil pan ( sump ) so while I was having the oil pan changed I had the rod bearings changed again on 101,000. It was surprising how much wear was on these rod bearings with only 18,000 miles on them. So I would recommend to any owner with 80,000 miles on there car to invest in getting them changed for piece of mind

In my opinion... Oil analysis is a waste of time and money to the average M5 owner. If your car is on the original big end shells change the oil... often, by the time you hear that infamous "knocking" sound its already too late for those bearings. Change them out asap if you intend to keep using the car.. oh and did i mention to change the oil... regularly. By the time you you've had 4 or 5 oil analysis tests you've probably forked out more than half the cost of replacing them anyway. Another good vid MTG..

Hey there brother, I hope you are fine. Just a question, so in short I’ve been looking at e63/64 m6’s recently… and there is one in great condition, only 59,000 to 60,000 Miles. The owner is a close friend of ours, and he has been taking care of the car very well. Every morning he would let it warm up properly, he does oil changes frequently… always at the time. And oh one more thing, it’s not a daily driver. He drives it sometimes only. We asked him regarding rod bearings, and he said he took perfect care of the car and he didn’t do anything to the engine, so I’m not sure if the rod bearings have been changed or no. Should we get the rod bearings checked before buying it? Even after he has told us of how great he took care of the car? And let’s say we check the rod bearings and we see they are fine, not in bad shape… we could change later right? This rod bearing issue kinda has us scared, Hope you give advise.
@MTechGuy
@MTechGuy Жыл бұрын
There’s only one way to check the rod bearings with any certainty, that’s to remove them and at that stage you would replace them anyhow. I would say with the car being relatively low miles, and it sounds like it’s been looked after and driven properly, I wouldn’t worry too much about the rod bearings, but make a plan to replace them in the future as preventative maintenance, along with the HP vanos hose and check the vanos pump

Yep will defiantly getting the Vanos HP line done. It’s actually already been done once the early 2005s where recalled for it. Also going to get the hella gear on the Vanos pump done, oil chain tensioner on the oil pump, they where updated in 2006 for better engagement I believe. Might do the oil sprayers as well they where updated in length to slightly longer and replace the engine mounts as well. Would have liked to have done the oil pan for the one with both plugs, but they are stupid money at the moment.

@MTechGuy 3 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting it was done that early on, but good you’re getting it sorted while you’re in there. VANOS gears and chain tensioner are a good move, it’s a great opportunity to inspect the VANOS pump too. New style oil squirters are a nice to have but not essential. The duel drain oil pan is overrated, you can get nearly all the oil out by running the engine right before you drain it, and if you change the oil super regularly it’s not really a concern

Yer I was surprised about the Vanos HP line also! I had heard that the early ones where recalled for it. I recently managed to find someone in my local dealer who was able to track back the cars BMW history all the way back to delivery and print it off for me! And there it was June 2006 13082 miles. This was after I had phoned round loads of the dealers who had stamped the book and got little out of them. Thanks for the advice about the squirters and oil pan! I remember you saying in one of your vids! Hopefully the Vanos pump is all ok it’s very expensive 😫 Thanks for the great advice 👍

Bearings have now been replaced: Vanos pressure was low on pre replacement test 10 Bar at idle! I did find metal in my filter when I initially got the car and I thought it to be bearing material. I flushed the oil and had it sampled from then on, filter and samples have always been clean. Bearings changed after 4k of ownership. Unfortunately looks like the metal was from the pump. They checked the Vanos oil line for leaks using HP air and found none. They inspected pump and recommended replacement. So I now have: New BE bearing New Vanos pump and oil line New updated crank and pump gears New chain tensioner and springs whilst they where in the area I had them replace the pre cat Lambda sensors. Also turns out my rear brake lines where heavily corroded so both where replace front to back! Wallet has been emptied but the car is running great. Only other thing I had was code: 27B6 Vanos oil pressure, but showed as non existent. No EML I have the old Vanos pump so will strip it down myself.

i have 94000 miles on my e60 m5. quotes from BMW for rod bearings were between $15-20000 for parts and labour to replace them. im never replacing the rod bearings the car will rot before i replace them.

Getting it done at BMW would be done to the factory procedure, using genuine parts include all the bolts that are supposed to be replaced, plus dealer warranty. There are plenty of independent places that can do it cheaper. At 94,000 miles they might be OK, it all comes down to how the car has been driven previously

@@MTechGuy I drive the car like a granny. Never go above 6000 rpm and change the oil ever 7-8000 km . I’m not worried about the rod bearings

@@MTechGuy Aye lad is Scottish , not English. I watched Trainspotting dozens of times, CWO nearly a hundred. I am sorry I could not stomach The Doctor, and could not laugh at Faulty Towers. Benny Hill only made me laugh at those speeded up sequences. Except for Ministry Of Silly Walks and Dead Parrot , Monty Python humor is over my head. Point is, I learned English speak from BBC and BBCAmerica. So I am an expert. That's how British from London to York talk. Welsh are slightly different. I also add 'Right then...' to expectedBrit talk.

@@MTechGuy I have visited England. Rented a car, a Mini Cooper, and ALMOST DIED! I had a hard time figuring out how to operate a British car while siting in left side seat. As we do in America. I finally did figure it out by watching old Mr.Bean episode . I used broom stick , cricket bat , and rubber belt to steer and press pedals. I don't understand why steering wheel and pedals are on opposite side of driver seat, and why traffic goes in opposite direction. I deduced, that U.K. is located in alternate universe bubble that intersects our Earth in our universe.

I have two m6,one have 70k km,the other have 111k km and I changed rod bearings at 104. I used both harder,but well OIL change every 3000 /4500 km and inspection,oil shift every 40000 but the thing I think most important to prevent issues is a good warm up:I do so start up and first 10 minutes the engine warms up, then tooled out of the garage first 15 minutes I drive on a max of 3000 rpm even the Rev counter says 8250.I put Bardhal XTR Competition 10W60. That’s all

Yes proper warm up is a big part of looking after these cars properly. It takes some restraint keeping it under 3000rpm though!
