In this video I show you an overview and some time saving tips and information related to removing the Bank 2 Turbocharger on an N54 (E60). The job will take you a while to complete, but with a little patience it isn't too bad! Unless of course your fuel pump is dead when you finish the job!

They are usually labeled left and right turbo so which one would the back turbo be?

i just had a turbo seal go out, i'm going upgraded 17t's on my 08 535xi. i'm also doing oil pan gasket, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, pulleys, oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, diff seals, and diff service while i'm in there (i'm honestly terrified and looking forward to it at the same time) Am I forgetting something? Is there anything else you'd do if it were your vehicle?

Hey Troy, the only other weak points I felt needed to be addressed were the chargepipe and the intercooler as both of those in stock form leave a lot to be desired in both reliability and performance. In terms of maintenance items you seem to be hitting the major items, I would inspect all coolant hoses and P/S lines, etc. while I am down there. For sure replace the thermostat to water pump crossover hose, they get lots of heat from their location.

Hi i have a 2008 bmw 535xi and i replaced the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket but when i do a pull on 2nd gear after been stop on stop light the car smoke from exhaust blue smoke help this is the turbos?

Blue exhaust is usually the turbos.

Dumb question but did you have to drop the subframe at all? Debating whether I should DIY this or just have a shop handle it.

@@mogulme6190 Clearance. I tried without dropping the subframe and there's just no way. Specifically on an x-drive car at least. Passenger axle is in the way and it's nearly impossible to get your hands or tools where you need to. I ended up having to remove the passenger strut, axle, swaybar, and water pump. That's how BMW recommends you do it at least. Probably more work than just dropping the subframe a few inches which it seems you can get away with.

In what state do you live??? Would love for you to change the 4 water hoses connected to the turbos.

Beyond visual inspection, it can be hard to single out which one exactly it is.

Sometimes you'll have codes associated with either Bank 1 or Bank 2, say perhaps misfires, etc. If you have a 30FF code or the car makes a pronounced "Whoosh" sound while in boost you should start investigating. If you notice misfires on say Cyl 1,2, and/or 3, you can pretty much isolate it to that Bank. This method depends on how bad the turbo is. With this vehicle the turbo was seized acting as an obstruction/restriction to exhaust gases, which caused misfiring in all 3 cylinders on that Bank. Very telling. There are other methods too, but this is just one.

I was quoted $10000 by an independent shop to replace my turbos here in connecticut Unbelievable

I was quoted $1600 if i bought my own turbos at my local independent shop $10000 is ludacris you can buy a new motor for that price lol.
