BMW E70 X5M - Transfer Case, Front & Rear Diff Service - Part 2

All fill and drain plugs are 14mm allen - access to transfer case and rear diff outer cambers is very limited. So I had cut 1" and 2" pieces from large a 14mm allen key and it worked out great.
Front Diff:
BMW Final Gear Oil C-SAF-XO SAE 75W-90 - P/N 07512293972
Fluid Capacity approx. 750ml - Fill until it drains from fill plug.
Transfer Case:
BMW DTF1 or S-Tec Transfer Case Fluid (From FCPEuro)
Fluid Capacity approx. 850ml - Fill until it drains from fill plug.
Rear Diff:
Outer Chambers - BMW SAF CARBON MOD GEAR OIL - SAE 75W-85 - P/N 83120445832
Middle Chamber: BMW Final Gear Oil C-SAF-XO SAE 75W-90 - P/N 07512293972
Fluid Capacity:
Left Chamber: 540ml - Fill until it drains from fill plug.
Right Chamber: 580ml - Fill until it drains from fill plug.
Middle Chamber: 970ml - Only add 970ml.

Hey there! Thanks for your channel and showing your work on your E70. I just purchased an E70 X5M (2012) with 110k which is in great shape and for what I can read and see has been serviced quite well. I’m not new to servicing/repairing my BMWs over the years but this is my first bmw with 3 rear gear oil chambers. As I’m going through all my fluids and replacing, I just did the rears and used the same BMW specified oils as you. I also replaced all the drain/fill plugs and replaced the 3 drain plugs with magnetic ones purchased from ECS Tuning. Unfortunately, the 2 outer final drive drains seemed to get very tight before they bottomed out and I did not want to mess anything up so I didn’t force them to get completely seated. They didn’t leak so I thought I would see it that would suffice. However, after driving it, I saw they did leak. I was able to seat them finally as I’m sure the heat from the drive casing made it easier. My question to you is about the outer chambers’ fill capacities. All that I’ve seen and read indicates they must have the precise fill quantities … Passenger side = 580ml, Middle = 950ml, Drivers side = 540ml. It was the two outer ones that leaked on me AND it was a pain to know that I had the right amount in there but I’m pretty sure I had it right. However, my 2 outer final drive chambers did not overflow as you said yours did when filling with that “golden $$” SAF carbon oil. So, to be clear, are you saying that when you put the 580ml in the right side and the 540ml in the left side, THAT AMOUNT caused it to come out of the fill plug area? That would make it so much better for me now that I don’t know how much is in those chambers but I’m just not sure, based on what I’ve read that I should chance it. Your thoughts? I may just drain them and do over. I have another almost full 500ml bottle of the SAF Carbon mod. oil. Thanks again for your channel and comment. Ron

Hey, yes, with the correct quantity, outer chambers did overflow for me. If they did not for you, I'd say go ahead and fill to a point where it overflows, let it stop, and you should be good.

Did you do an F85 X5M brake caliper upgrade?

No, they're E70M factory calipers with brakenetic rotors.
