BMW e90 2008 engine misfire fixed fuel injector faulty and replaced

in this video i have this BMW e90 2008 and it suddenly started misfiring, so I had to investigate and found misfire in several cylinders using diagnostics equipment Launch X431 , the car had new coil packs and spark plugs 5 years ago, but only covered 10000 miles. So I decided to go with checking the fuel injectors, as I had some spare ones from another BMW, the injectors cost are £371 + VAT so a fortune which is why it might be a good idea to make sure its an injector problem. It was in this car so I replace it with the second hand one I had.

Great video. Cn you just clarify that you suspected injector 1 because switching it off in a test made no worsening of the misfire? Also, many DIYs emphasise changing injector seals which need compressing with a special tool - don't you need to do that or is that just for new injectors? Finally, do you have to code the new injector?

Hi, to be honest I never come across anything that states the injectors need to be compressed, so can’t really comment much on that. Yes the injector in number one cylinder was not working and switching it of just confirmed that the misfire was in number one cylinder though the misfire could be caused by a spark plug or coil pack. But those have been changed in this car. You would have to check that too. And yes technically the injector need to be programmed. Though I didn’t do that I think, don’t remember, it is advised to do so. I just get to many BMW of that era with injector problems.

Is there any interim maintenance one can do on the CAT if suspected, before replacing NOX sensor? Thanks.

I don’t think so, looking at the BMW diagnostic software it says if cat 🐈 is suspected to be causing a problem then needs to be replaced. But often the fault code referring to the nox can be ignored. Unless there is a fault that causes an issue with the running of the engine. Hope this makes sense sorry.

i need your opinion : my bmw e90 with the n52 engine sometimes have a stuttering start. so if i do a cold start it stutters to a total shut down or it correct it self again and after that it runs fine ? when the car is still hot after a drive and lets say i start the car again after 30 minutes the rpm is all over the place and after a while it is normal again ? is it a sign of a failing injectors ? there are no engine lights or warning ...

The car in the video had a similar behavior, so it is very possible that a fuel injector is playing up, they cost an arm and a leg so as long as you have checked spark plugs and coil packs, then you can start looking into injectors..or as did i used second hand injector, which till now since i made the video the car has not presented the same symptoms so all is good.

IIRC BMW made over 11-12 varients of the injectors for these engines as they couldnt get them right. The version is the end of the code which i think yours states 10. People also forget these need to be programmed into the ecu, not straight swap.

You can recode the injectors with your Launch. I did it with my Launch Creader X431 elite. Made massive difference.

I looked up the parts numbers. The injectors are from a 330i and you put them in a 318i. Is the car having any issues?

Hey I have an issue with my e90 N43 engine. On cold start the cars engine vibrations can be felt inside the cabin, when D is engaged vibrations worsen then when put in N it calms down a bit but still can be felt. After idling for about 30 - 40 minutes the vibrations completely go away and it operates as normal. I don’t think it’s a engine mount issue because the vibrations go away after it warm if it was the mounts it should stay also No codes on the car or flashing engine light to indicate a misfire. It’s done 111k miles got the car at 80k haven’t replaced the injectors since my time owning it just had a service a month ago fresh oil and spark plugs and coils. Any advice is appreciated

That engine can have issues with fuel injectors , which cause slight misfire on start up that is not enough to cause a fault code. and then it runs well. The things each injector costs an eye and a leg, so if it’s not majorly causing you any issues I would keep using it till a real misfire is detected and then you can at least see which cylinder may b at fault. Please take advice with a pinch of salt as with cars nothing is ever black and white if you know what I mean.

is ur mpg very low as well, i have the same issue i haven’t replaced the fuel injectors but have done an engine rebuild

Did u replace the seal of new injector or no?

No , I just use the seal that was on the second hand injector.

Hi to be honest I only replaced the injector due to a misfire on the engine. I don’t think bad fuel consumption would relate to injectors. May be the car is running rich for a different reason.
