this is very time consuming DIY. not easy but it can be done with lots of patience. this is a 2008 BMW 328i with automatic transmission. blue colored bolts are aluminum, that means one time use only.
WARNING: floor jack is only for lifting the car...always use jack stands to support the weight of the car
⚠️ i'm not a certified auto mechanic...i just love to work on my own cars...so DIY at your own risk ✌️

Probably the literal best video on how to do this job step by step. I’ll definitely be using this when I have to drop mine to check my bearings and pick up tube.

I just did my oil pan, water pump and thermostat. I noticed each hole in the engine block where the oil pan bolts were removed from had a decent amount of thread lock compound remaining from the old bolts. This gasket was original and the holes definitely needed time and patience to clean each. I'm now convinced that this would contribute to snapping bolts on installation. My pan gasket replacement went without a hitch and this video helped a lot. Thanks.

Just want to say a BIG THANK YOU for this video. It saved me a lot of headache after I installed the new gasket & set of bolts on an N53 and was left with 5 extra bolts that got me thinking I was sold the wrong set of bolts. Thank you for highlighting the extra bolts, it is such small details that differentiate this excellent video from others.

thanks for watching. yes, it's a lot of work but it can be done. just take your time and make sure you don't skip any steps and follow the torque values. make sure you have all the parts and tools before you start your DIY. i recommend to pay your repair shop (if you have the cash) to do this job if you don't feel comfortable doing it. remember, safety first.

Wow! One of the best and most detailed videos on the oil pan gasket. I have been undecided on the DIY repair, as most of the content I've seen so far have left things out of their videos (probably due to struggle and issues with the repair they didn't want viewers to see and lose credibility) that it made it difficult to understand what the hell they just pulled off or how they got the component off. However, your video was a breath of fresh air. I like how you detail every bolt spec and size, how you torqued each piece down, which tool you used, and MOST valuably how you organized everything. WELL DONE Randy! Thank you for your hard work in producing this video, it must have cost you a week's time to do it. Please keep delivering more.

They screwed with me alright.. lol In any case, you video and explanation was superb and spot on! Great, informative video. There are several out there on how to replace the oil pan gasket but most do not include the correct torqueing specs for the various components that have to be removed and reinstalled to complete the job. I crossed referenced your specs because the reinforcement brace torqueing spec you listed seemed low but you are correct on all accounts. Thanks. You probably kept me from breaking some bolts in some places you never, ever want to break a bolt.

Thanks for this video. Used it for my 2007 330i Auto. You did make one mistake, or perhaps you didn't show it in the video. The longest aluminum bolts at the back of the oil pan have to be torqued to 180 degrees, not 90 degrees. It's because they are much longer and will need to be stretched more, to acheive the same torque. See BMW TIS manual if you want to check.

What is the worst case scenario for leaking oil pan? In worst case scenario, can it leak all oil and damage the engine, or it kind of leaks a little bit for years? Essentially, if it leaks little bit, I can just leave it until I sell my car. And if it leaks bit too much, I just add oil every couple of months. Essentially, I'd like to know if oil pan gasket can catastrophically fail and just leak all oil out in matter of minutes.

Nice video! I must get one of those engine support braces!! A question about the tow hook - on my 2006 Z4, the tow hook is the right size and thread pitch, but the eyelet shoulder bumps into the valve cover gasket after only seating about halfway. Is there another source of hooks I might pursue to fulfill this function? Also, the engine support is rated for 1000 lbs, but I have no clue if this is sufficient. Any idea on the weight range of the N52 engine? thanks again!

Great explanation and video - hopefully I can accomplish the task before me - id love to know what other tools u used such as the torque ratchets and also did u have a vehicle lift? I’m currently on ramps because of changing the water pump and the repair guide said the ramps was the best way to support the vehicle but I’m thinking it’s not possible to do it that way for the oil pan gasket . How much of the front end was removed ? Thanks for everything

Anthony, I didn't post the video and it may be to late for me to help you. But I too have found it difficult to jack up and safely set my BMW 3 series convertible on jack stands. I finally found some conversion adapters on ebay. They are specifically designed to adapt a 3 ton Torin jack stand to the OEM lifting pads on the BMW. They are made by FoRSVARA spelt just like I wrote it out of Ohio and are about 50 bucks a pair. A little pricey but they are well made and anyone that repairs or services there on BMW should have a set of four. Good luck.
