I have a 2011 E92 M3 6 speed, just did rod bearings at 36k miles. There was surprisingly a lot of wear. I would recommend getting it done especially if you plan to keep the car long term. Also installed an Autosolutions short shift kit, takes all the play out of the shifter and makes it feel extremely solid and high quality, with more direct feel. Its custom made to your preferences, so you can choose how much throw reduction you want and at what height. Highly recommend. Hope to see more videos on your M3 in the future, thanks.

For rod bearings there have been cars with 100k+ miles and showing minimal wear. It's honestly different for every car and the main determination for wear is if the car was correctly never pushed hard before reaching oil operating temp
@brandonpainter7085
@brandonpainter7085 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasdoherty5104 That's really only partially true. Regular proper warm up procedure surely does not make you immune from rod bearing failure, and is only a small part of the picture when it comes to S65/S85 rod bearing failure. Those who know these engines, those who build them, all agree that there is too little clearance int he rod bearing design from the factory, and recommend increased clearance spec rod bearing replacement. There are many examples of S65's s/p 50k+ miles + track days on proper spec bearings that have been taken apart and show zero wear. Less internal friction and more reliability is a win win.

@@davson15 It is a very personal choice and I think their can be good arguments to support either side. I think it comes does to what you are looking to get out of this car, and how much do you love driving stick. For me, I’m not looking to be the fastest E92 on the road, I’m not looking for something that will be a daily. I bought an E92 M3 because it’s a drivers car and I love the engagement and feel it provides on every level. And I absolutely love driving manual - I love rev matching, heal toeing, having complete control, the extra level of engagement. So manual was the clear choice for me. While the E9X M3 manual surely isn’t the best manual I’ve driven, and may leave some to be desired, I do not think it is “bad” or “cheap.” My car is relatively low miles so it felt pretty solid as stock, but I’m sure a higher mileage car could have a little more slop. However regardless of mileage, the auto solutions short shift kit really improves the feel and makes it a great 6 speed, but keeps that nice OEM look that I prefer. If you don’t care about OEM looks then you have the option of getting a chassis mounted shifter.

@@davson15 With Automatic VS Manual: Manual all the way. Same CANNOT be said with DCT VS Manual: It is a tie. I personally went with DCT on my M3 competition pack because this car was built and meant to be driven as a DCT vehicle. It really shows. This car shines with DCT. Better yet, these transmissions take a massive beating. A plus when you tune it with the GTS software. I don't see too much of a point to get the M3 in manual. It just makes the car a lot slower, like Audi R8 V8 slow.

Great down-to-earth, non flashy, informative video. Love videos like these. First of all, your car looks great, and I actually like your seats. I think they keep it looking fresh and not dated as well as the navigation screen, but that's just my preference. Currently looking for a well maintained E90 or 92 myself. I have a 2017 428i, and it's been a great car, but I'm not getting that ultimate driving machine experience I was looking for. My only real concern is the lack of torque down low and am hoping it doesn't give that sluggish feeling driving around town or from a stop, as I really don't like that feel. Going to watch your mod video now. Best of luck!

Spot on!! I had an interlagos ZCP e90 6speed for 2 years and no issues on my end either! Just basic maintenance. Rod bearings weren’t done either. With that said tho I think really all depends on the “type” of driver we are. Weekend warrior/non track. There’s going to be the other batch of car guys that will fight you on your review but they need to be reminded the factor of how the driver intends to use the car

Great review video it helps me a lot as soon to be owner!🙂I use to have a 1998 E36 M3 Manual sedan (still miss it). Got married, sold it in 2012 and bought a Lexus RX. Still have the Lexus as my old golf beater. Have had a 2013 E93 335is DCT (loved it), 2015 535i M sport and a 2015 Audi RS5 Cab (also last NA V8) in the past few years! We do have an X5 M Sport currently but I miss the manual! So I just bought a 2008 E93 manual in Sparkling Graphite Metallic (only year offered) with Fox Red. With 90K on it, it's been well taken care of but had the rod bearings replaced and other subtle stuff done. I too am not big on bunch of mods. It's in route from Florida to California. I already know some cosmetic stuff I want to do like rear LCI tail lights, LUX head lights and the leather carbon fiber trim. I will post once I get comfortable with it. Thx again!

Excellent summary. My 2008 E93 Cabriolet has been a pleasure to own since new and I hope to keep it forever. Watch for any minor leak on the rear diff and replace the seals. If it fails it will dump all the fluid and fail spectacularly. Common fault is the passenger airbag module which senses a passenger's weight in the seat. It will fail, just a question of when. I routinely send an oil sample from an oil change to Blackstone for analysis, as an early warning system. While I prefer a manual shift, the double-clutch on my car means that everyone in the family can drive it (when I reluctantly let them).

Hey great review and As a 4 year owner of an e90 M3 Comp Pak MY11 I could not agree more with all you have said. Mine has 38k and I drive it daily and commute to the city. It been 100% reliable and is my 3rd M3 and definitely the best. My Son hav a F80 but while it is ballistically fast it does not drive as well as mine and I think it will age and the interior is very plasticy and it creaks. My Mods are similar to yours but X Pipe Sports exhaust without primary CATs and a BPM stage 2 tune which did make quite a difference to the car in that it woke it up quite a lot over the standard car not a huge HP gain but it was definitely the best mod to make and sounds fantastic which I think is something only owners for e9x am3 can understand and appreciate. Agree on the Rod End bearing issue. It is a fact of life but once you get them changed that is is. Throttle Actuators are basically a time based issue as a whole (There are always exceptions especially on the forums etc 😂) but their issue is more a time and heat soak issue given their location in the middle of the V and boy does it get hot under that aluminium bonnet. But as you said treat them right with good regular servicing, warm them up properly which probably caused most of the Rod End issues anyway and run the correct oil for you part of the country or world and the S65 is an amazing engine that is totally reliable. Just look at how many e9x still run around the Ring without any issues and are amazingly fast still after all this time. These cars are classic and are collectable. Great review it’s just a shame about the E9X haters out there, but as you said most of them have most likely never owned one for real Jp

Love my white '13 6 speed Comp. Never selling it. A few more thoughts: 1- The clutch length is just a bit too far. Put the $5 slightly bigger 'stopper' in (look it up) so you can press it to the max while still sitting comfortably. 2- The yellow halogens are yuck. Easy switch to put in white LEDs, which actually make the car look "younger", in addition to improving night visibility. 3- An X6 donut spare will fit the e92 M3, which thus allows one to get rid of those awful run flats for proper Michelin PS4S'. PS I also swapped out the gear shifter for the M5s. Game changer.

Nice video, I do love the M3, but I love my 335. Basically the same car (sport package etc.) but with the N55. They are very similar but the turbo makes a big difference. Mine has been quite unreliable, but I drive it hard, plus it is my dd with 120K miles, and the infamous electric water pump issue has bit me twice. But honestly, if I had a 4 car garage like yours I would have an E92 M3 or maybe E46 M3. Or maybe the new M2 CS.

The rear seats give the passengers a great seating position, which I think is the key to it feeling so comfortable. You are also 100% right about 335i owners. I have always said it. 335i owners are the worst group of BMW enthusiasts out there. And unfortunately, that “335i mindset” has also infiltrated into all the newer regular 1, 2, 3, and 4 series owners.

I'm glad you made this video....I think most you tubers go on contagion mode and repeat what the other KZbin said and soon people like me, who wants an e92, find myself wondering how could BMW make a rolling turd, an unreliable POS, how could they knowingly make a bad car and why do I want one....thank you.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to present this documentation of your E90 M3, along with a well presented detailed list and supplies to preserve its appearance and maintenance. I also own an E90 M3 manual,although I've only driven it once very modestly after purchase for about 30 Km just to simply say I've experienced it.At purchase, it had merely 735Km on it. It was originally owned by BMW Canada, who used it as a release vehicle for the various dealers in Canada and for the public at events throughout Canada such as the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in Toronto Ontario and other similar events in various provinces throughout Canada (in British Columbia,Calgary, Montreal ,PEI etc). A dealership in Calgary Alberta ultimately acquired it & whom I gained acquisition from.Other than may test drive,the vehicle has remained stored indoors under controlled climate conditions by a BMW dealership whom also perform the necessary periodic maintenance that still requires to be performed even under these conditions. I haven't had performed any of the major issues such as pro-active rod bearing replacement, nor the throttle body actuators.I'm not sure what I will ultimately do with respect to these; however, I will continue to monitor information.My most likely decision on these will be to do nothing but monitor and observe once I do begin driving it.However, due to it's low mileage I would perform periodic oil analysis, regular oil & filter changes well before BMW recommendation,most likely well within 5000 km., & also perform the correct egine break -in ptocedure, and I don't plan to ever rev the engine beyond 5000 RPM.I recognize the notable presence that it's engine demands; however, I believe that the M3 can be enjoyed satifactoraly, in many ways, such as its tremendous handling, cornering ability, safety and breaking ability, exterior and interior presence, other than simply focusing on running it up to 8500 rpm redline with every shift, it's 0 to 100 specs , and etc. !

Owned nearly identical 2011 (red interior) for 3 yrs, not a daily, 45k miles to 55k...not a lot of miles but zero problems so far, stock comp. Always great fun, good replacement for the crotch rockets of my youth. Also paid $35k, immaculate, single owner from Colorado....single owner is crucial to ME...with 4 or 5 owners they only rented it. Trans is vastly better than my old E46 but that is a LOW bar.

Great video. The most shocking part was the reliability part. I've heard that BMW has to make good cars. Considering what they'll be used for in Europe and some other parts of the world. I've never owned a BMW but I am looking into an M sedan. Here's what I have discovered from my research. If someone neglects a BMW they'll neglect you. Yet what car doesn't do that?

Awesome video! I also have an M3 and live near Indianapolis. I have been running redline 5w50 in mine the last 3 years and have been getting significantly less bearing wear on my oil analysis. If you track the car I’d keep 10w60, but if you drive it for fun I would definitely recommend 5w50. I also add MotorKote usually 1 quart MotorKote and the rest 5w50 redline. It warms up in half the time as well and the vanos system still runs good on it. I change mine at 3,000 miles. But I’m sure like you, I hit the 1 year mark on mine before the mileage mark....awesome video though! Mine is Interlagos Blue with the competition package.

Just a side-note: the E92 is actually not designed by Chris Bangle. BMW wanted to their 3 series to sell well, so they kinda intentionally avoided the progressive styling that Chris Bangle is known for. The E9x turned out to be design by a Japanese designer (can’t remember his name tho).

I sold my E92 M3 last Fall and bought an F82 M4. I miss 2 things: The thigh extensions on the seats and of course the V8 sound. I had mine 4 years and sold it for $4,000 less than I paid. Zero mechanical issues. The E92 has a more organic feel, more about driving and not just technology. And as far as the M3 vs 335 debate goes, I came from a '13 335is and yes, it was faster with way more torque, but the M3 was more refined, tighter, more planted with nicer seats. Good video Brandon!

My friend, your right the BMW is a very good car. Mine is a 2010 E92 N51 No turbo, hydronic steering, sport pak. 107,000, 8 years owned, no major problems. Oil change, plugs, fluids, plane maintenance is the key. It is a reliable car. The 335i has turbos and that is the problem. Wear and tear called thermo shock all trubo's go through this, it part of the beast. The natural aspererated engine is the best, not the fastest but so what! it has a better reliability life than any turbo car. That's just the way it is! And you know what. To buy a BMW, you did buy a very good car. O'" ya" made in Germany 2009 🇩🇪 shipped over here, for the 2010 year. Thanks

5w50 is better oil for it. Warmer thermostat 89c instead of 78c will get your temp up quicker and saved your rod bearings. I own one, I have that set up. You could 200k miles on good bearings with the 5w50 and 89c thermostat.

E92 M3 owner. Replaced my bearings at MRF with 45k miles. Severe pitting on cylinder 4 and general deterioration throughout. I feel like this comes down to risk tolerance, I spent roughly $2k out the door with new mounts and sleep well at night. Does it happen to a lot of people? No. But, I’d rather spend $2k vs. $20k for a new S65. One of my irritations with the car is the size of the gas tank, would have loved it to be 25% larger. My experienced has largely mirrored yours though, all I’ve replaced is the battery in 3 years of ownership.

It can go either way. You either HAVE to rev it out or you GET to rev it out. It’s all a matter of perspective. From a performance standpoint, having little low end torque is a detriment. But if you want the best straight line performance, an m3 is probably the wrong car for you regardless. I personally am a huge fan nice sounding engines with a high redline, so I gravitate more towards something like this over the newer m3’s with the turbos and higher torque. It’s not to say that one is better than the other, but it’s just the kind of car that I prefer. With that said, I’ll be happy if I get to squeeze these cheeks into any m3 at all.

73k on stock rod bearings. Not changing them any time soon. My M3 is very reliable mechanically but at this point I ran into a problem, my car loses electrical power while driving. Dealership said it was battery problem and that it was not coded in right, so I replaced battery. Car still shuts off and they say my throttle actuators are failing - they're not. Lastly, my cup holder came back some what broken, the spring was still intact but the cup holder needed to be pulled a little for it to really spring out. I bring it back, they couldn't replicate the electrical black out problem but they did replace cup holder and surprise surprise surprise! They throw me a 3.5k bill on throttle actuators, still! I declined. Fuck Buena Park BMW. Anyways, what could be the problem for my car blacking out while driving? Alternator? Loose connection from a wire? Computer?
