BMW Electric Power Steering Rack Motor Removal.

This BMW Electric power steering rack is a very common problem for the BMW Z4, 3-Series and 1-Series built between 2006 and 2016. The common reported fault is complete loss of power steering with no communication to the steering system via diagnostics.
The problem is caused by the failure of the electric motor part of the steering rack. In order to resolve the problem you will need to remove the motor from the steering rack. This video demonstrates how to do this without damaging the splines of the motor.

Donor rack on bench motor off in under 10mins, motor on car siezed solid in the rack, levered it hammered it cursed in ended up leaving the end of the motor in the rack after motor broke around the output bearing housing! Complete rack had to go on

When you spin that slip ring, The seal behind it must move too. Check the locators stay in line to bring seal around also.

For those that find this video trying to do this on an F30, it’s similar but actually much easier. There is no internal ring to turn and it can very easily be done without removing the rack from the car. Just remove the 3 T45 screws on the electric motor side and slide out the electric motor. (No need to open any housings or remove all 5 screws) The 2015 320i I just did had 3 threaded bolt holes in groups of two. Use the holes to the right in each group. You’ll also need to pop out the plastic cover on the passenger side so you can line up the belt properly. Takes about 2min start to finish.

Hi, help would be appreciated, when removing a Jeep Grand Cherokee EPS motor is it as simple as undoing the 4 bolts and sliding it out and putting the new one in or do I have to do anything with the inner retaining ring etc? Thanks

Great video. I removed the motor with the steering rack still on the car. Be careful keep checking the inner ring. Very good instructions. I sent it off 2 days ago to ecu testing. So far they have received it and working on it. Very good communication. Once i get the unit back I’ll do update.

@@2kDozer I dont think you can get only the motor as brand new.. Some used ones are on ebay etc. I ended up replacing the whole rack. Thought it as a safer choice.

Just to update the info here further as it certainly helped me. I've got a 2018 F30 330e and removed the motor today. I did it while the rack was still in place. To split the outer housing there were 7 torx bolts as apose to 5 in this video and there was no locking ring to rotate. 3 torx holding on the motor and then it slides out. It can be done as another post in this thread mentioned (3 bolts to remove the motor and not split the housing) but I chose to split the housing to make sure there was no locking ring internally and to help line up the belt upon refitting. Hope this helps other people.

Hi Gerard, I have the same problem with my steering...getting very hard to drive...we performed all checks, communications, re-programming and the problem still exists. I have been told that the steering rack needs to be replaced. My question is: can it be replaced with used one? Or do I need to buy a new steering rack? How long does it take for the splines to damage the gear and break a steering motor? I had the steering bolts replaced in October and the "power steering reduced" alert popped up in July (9-months later). The service center won't replace just the steering motor, or any single component of the steering rack, because they won't assess the parts. The service center says I have to buy the entire steering rack. What are your thoughts and ideas?

when changing the belt is it necessary to put it in the specific point? Or do you have no belt mounting point?

Doing mine at the moment whilst still attached to the car. There is no particular belt mounting point per se. But I believe when you come to attach the belt, the steering wheel should be centralised. I could be wrong on that centralised bit, but I have centralised the steering anyway just in case. The steering before this point was all the way to the left (which gives you more room to work during all the previous steps).

@@darth_art2101 I didn't need to programme the new motor. The Wheel Alignment of the car was way out after I finished this job. I had to get the wheel alignment done at a garage after I did the job.
