So what exactly is the point of replacing long proven hydraulic steering technology with highly-complex, expensive, fault-prone, dangerous, and non-consumer serviceable systems? Thousands of discrete and active components, computer, belt-drive that belongs in a sewing machine, ribbon-cable and connectors from a printer, delicate optical encoders and stepper motor with controller. This technology represents everything wrong in modern automotive design. Instead of focus on safety, simplicity, reliability, cost reduction, redundancy; engineers implement what can only be called a 'nightmare implementation'. EPAS system implementation in automobiles since 2008 (especially Ford) represent one of the worst engineering blunders since the Pinto. Millions of EPAS systems have failed in Ford automobiles alone, leaving consumers with hefty $2,500.00 repair bills. Most units fail due to thermal damage because EPAS units are designed using non-automotive qualified components. In engineering school; we learned one of the most basic concepts for electronic implementations; 'reliability drop-off vs complexity'. 'Wisdom lays not on the path to knowledge'.

@@ryanfreeman125 The Ford recalls for this shit implementation say otherwise. And for those not under the recall years, there are numerous complaints by those that have had to shell out the ridiculous cost of repair (aka replacement) of failing units. I for one will never again buy a car with such an implementation due to the prohibitive costs associated with it, and will outright never buy a Ford again.

Well said B Smith. I've been working on vehicles professionally for 45 years and putting electronics into steering racks has led to a lot of failures even on low mileage vehicles,at incredible expense. Progress? Hardly...

The point is not just one but several : 1. fuel savings - this is the main reason most innovations happen. You can save about 1.9Gallon of fuel per year by switching to electric steering versus hydraulic one. 2. Easier assembly - the robot who builds the cars can connect a plug and and a bolt, but has trouble installing a loose hydraulic hose, so those have to be installed by a person which is bad, as that person needs a paycheck, a healthcare, a break between work, can get sick, injured, etc. You get the point. 3. Cost savings - Yes ! its cheaper for a manufacturer because the cars are assembled faster and with less human interaction. 4. Increase of revenue - the rebuilding industry is taking millions or even Billions of dollars out of the manufacturer's pocket by providing a rebuilt low-cost alternative to the factory new product. With higher technology, complicated units this will put the money where it belongs, the manufacturer's pocket. 5. Repair process reduction - no more hoses, belts, seals, etc. Just pop-in a new unit charge the high dollar and out. Human interaction is less timely, profit therefore is increased at repairs. 6. It also takes less power from a car, so more hp is avail. for the driver. 7. With the electronic ps they can tailor the car to different driving styles and modes. Some prefers short ratio, some the leisurely soft steering, some in between. Now it is a touch of a button to adjust it. Also the cars has to self-park and the only way they can is with the properly set electronic steering which changes the steering angle instantly to high gear and able to steer fast. Also the self driving cars are almost here, 1-2 years away. (2019) and those require the same electronic units to steer effectively. I'm sure there are many more, but this is the commonly known reasons. If you think this is still BS and should have left the old, tested and tried method, you are not alone. But we are the dinosaurs and the young generation don't care about much in cars. Their most common critieria when buying a car are : 1. what type of social media interaction the car has ? Anything but the latest is considered lame. 2. How can I integrate my phone to the car and what level ? The deeper the interaction the better. The car should read all emails, texts, chats, snaps, whatever and be able to do all that your smart-phone does and take you to the places the smart phone picks out 3. How little fuel this car uses. Anything under 40mpg is in the OMG category and considered a gas-guzzler. 91.1% of the people do not care what the HP/ Torque numbers on the car, what engine size it has or how expensive is for example the transmission replacement on it. 99% does not care if any of the parts are rebuildable or not, but 99% do care that the parts are "recyclable" . They do not get that rebuildable is better then recyclable because a power steering rack should be rebuildable and I don't really care if they can melt it down to screws and nails, I want to re-use it as its original function. The traditional car industry is being killed-off. Within 30 years no new internal combustion engine will be produced and most things will be electric. Will it be good ? We don't know. We will HOPEFULLY see it and able to draw conclusions. Gas powered cars will still exists for a while, I expect total ban on them around 2100. I won't be on earth to see that but it will happen no question about it. If the oil industry changes to the electric charging field, they will just stop making fuel and that will be the end of it. Sure we can make fuel out of corn, wheat, etc. but it won't be like today. It will be a novelty and who knows what we will be able to actually do in 2100. Will we have green lands where we grow and harvest freely ? I'm happy that I was able to see the last hurray into the internal combustion engines. Awesome engines, huge HP figures, magnificent noises, great powerful cars. This is the last time we see V8 and V12 cars produced. The next generation cars are all smaller engine and hybrid models. Within 10 years all manufacturers will have electric models and as I said 30 years from now, there will be no gas-only engines produced.

There's got to be some way to reprogram these rack and pinions cuz Ford brings them back on a recall and just plug them up to a computer and give you back your car cuz they did that for me one time and then I actually had to get my replace not because of my rack and pinion went bad again but because my boot came off and bar that moves your tie rods rusted out I can't remember the name of it but y'all know the thing inside of the rack and pinion so I don't believe that you actually have to take this whole thing out of your car cuz I actually went to a Ford dealership and all they did was reset it and it was on the paper that all they did was reset it

I want to make a note that this is not a rebuild. This is a temporary fix. You built one working unit out of 2 defective ones. This get you ahead in a game but this is not a rebuild. You don't know when the other parts will fail in the unit and you don't know what caused the failure. Lets say hypothetically that you use the one that the motor was working and sensors are failed. What if the sensors failed because the motor is deteriorating and pushing the sensors out of their range ? Or vice versa ? I'm saying your newly "rebuilt" unit is a time-bomb as you don't fix the issue just simply swap the parts with an another used one that still works. It should be properly rebuilt. Sensors changed, motor changed, etc. Then we would know that all units that fails are rebuilt so it will last a long time. The one you created might last 30 minutes or 30h or 30 months, but for sure it is not as good as a new unit. Since these racks have a tendency to fail, and as we can see multiple different issues, why not sell just the components that actually fails in it, which is the motor and sensors. Ford could just sell those at a lower then complete unit price.

Do not take two bad racks and make one good one. You will NEVER get a good one. These racks are a known Ford problem due to the electronics built into/onto the rack. They get hot ! Repeatedly. They were not designed to withstand the temps they get subjected to. Take me for instance. I bought a good rack from a junkyard off of a vehicle that was totalled via a rear-end collision. It wound up going bad within 1 week of the install. So I was out a tow and the install labor. This time I went for a reman with a 3 year warranty. This was maybe a reman but the electronics were not. You are getting the old shitty electronics that are about to go out. These complicated electrical units were NEVER meant to be disassembled and rebuilt. And they aren't. So, now that I have had this REMAN rack on my car for 1 week, it is starting to fail. Just like all of the other junk. Trust me. Save yourself a lot of heartache. Bite the bullet and spend the $1,200 or so for a NEW rack. My car is now sitting on my carport awaiting the money ferry to bring me $1,700 to buy and install another rack.

Get a good scan tool and see what the fault is! Read live data like he is and figure out what it was. Mine failed due to a traction control steering angle sensor and not a good alignment. Reset power steering and works fine, turn traction control off.

Garbage repair for me too. Either new or remanned unit for my work. And if it’s new I warranty remanned I’ll do labor for half. It’s literally a roll of the dice because these videos show me insight on how they possibly rebuild it. Chances are they may not totally rebuild the unit with new components and just used working ones and paint the rack.
