Wow, after that much cleaning, I woulda left the alloy alone and maybe just a quick buff w some scotch brite on a drill r die grinder to liven it up some. I've got the US market M52 so iron block, but if my block was Aluminum I'd for sure be showing it off! Nice build and thanks for the slew of uploads.
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
I see your point but my experience with aluminium like this is that it corrodes a lot, especially if freshly roughed up and cleaned. It gives off a white powdery flaky corrosion, and I suspect that wouldn't take long. So I decided to go with the coatings to keep it looking fresh for as long as possible. Maybe doing the block silver would have created a similar effect, but to be honest I'm really happy with how it ended up looking black and gold. Glad you're enjoying the series! 😃

It won't set any quarter mile times though! 😆 Sadly the sump is not my own work, I wish I had the aluminium welding skills to do that sump - maybe one day! It was a second-hand bargain I picked up. Not really sure who did it but I believe originally aimed at an E21 M52 swapped car. Hopefully it wont cause me any issues with oiling being much shallower, but wee will sure find out! @SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin! And I definitely agree about the mask, that was unwise of me. Really hoping a slightly overtight one will be okay regarding the oil pump nut. 😅 Hopefully the lockwire and the red Loctite will seal the deal permanently on that. I don't think I tightened it enough to upset the shaft itself. I know what you mean about taking the head off, believe me I'd love to, but I can't stop myself and if I'm going to take the head off, I might as well do a full rebuild with new rings and shells etc. And at that point I'll probably never actually finish this car. 😂 With the removable front core support having the engine back out shouldn't be a big deal. I'm expecting to have it back out for a rebuild down the line. But lets see if it can be a working car first!

Thoroughly enjoying the build from Australia, and super impressed with your diligence, dedication, skills and ideas… One question and a comment… For the sake of a couple of tenners and while you have easy access with the engine out, are you going to replace the front and rear crank shaft oil seals prior to dropping it in? Unfortunately I don’t have welder or blow torch to extract broken studs, so the way I’ve dealt with them in the past was using a left-handed drill bit to drill down the centre of the bolt, combined with a ‘Ridgid screw extractor’ (and liberal amounts of WD-40). Worked really well

so since the video has one year , i'm curious about the magic honda sealant , cause a lot of people say that it's not really ok to put a sealant on a new gasket . also as i watched a lot of teardowns of engines that amount of buildup in the top of the engine makes me to believe that the engine did not had a happy life , at least not in the oil changes sector , my advice would be to run your oil to a lab every time you make an oil change

I had to mess with the thermostat housing again but I'm not sure that leak was the fault of the Hondabond. Other than that, everything I sealed has not leaked so I am satisfied. Hi, writing from my GF YT account, pro engine builder here, love this series, subbed and try to comment. Just a few tips though, engine must be cleaner inside than outside, on last video the ports and bores seemed outstandingly filthy, have a feeling you are pushing your luck and risking the motor. Absolutely no muck can enter the port and piston cyl area, specially the swarf like stuff we saw on your dads borescope. Was the Rocker cover cleaned before installing, on the edit it looks like it wasn't, this is another problem as muck can be lodged in there and find it's way into the cams and tappets... I know cleaning is a bitch but its 80% of engine reliability. I'm in the process of installing a m30 in a e30. thanks for your videos, they are very informative and detailed, love them just as much as Stretens content
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Ahh cheers! Yeah the ports had a surprising amount of dust and crap in, but nothing that should cause any damage, its just fluff really that should burn in an instant. The only thing I'm not quite as sure about it the little chunk of gasket in the cylinder. I'll likely put some time into trying to hoover out that and anything else. There's definitely no metal swarf in there. Regarding the plastic rocker cover, I actually put an ungodly amount of time into trying to clean it, and a lot came off, but its just heavily stained and will never be truly clean again. I will consider replacing it. But other than looking bad it was completely clean of any debris before going back on. I'm confident after its run for a split second it'll be golden. We'll find out of I'm wrong I guess. 😆 Glad you're enjoying the series!
