BMW F10 Trunk Open/Close Spring Replacement DIY | How To

In todays video I walk you through the process of replacing the trunk open/close shocks on a BMW F10! There is a known problem where if these shocks begin to, or completely fail, then not only can you have a difficult time closing the trunk, but your trunk can & will aggressively fly open when using the key fob or trunk release button, and in some extreme cases can make contact with the rear window, and potentially damaging it. This video goes over the process for replacing the trunk springs as well as what to look out for.

I bought and installed a couple of springs from A-Premium after watching your video. This is for a 2011 528i. The driver side spring snapped after 10 minutes. The head came off the piston. Terrible quality - basically junk. I returned everything to Amazon and I’m looking for either OEM or a reputable brand. But thanks for making the video.

They don’t matter which side as long as you have one with the shock inner dampener, and the other is just a solid plastic piece if memory serves me

The springs aren't the issue here so the old ones could have been reused. It's much cheaper just to buy the shock absorbers.

It’s been a while since I’ve owned the f10, but to my knowledge I didn’t have any noteworthy noises from the trunk during my ownership

But how did you figure out about long spring and short spring goes fits which side? Like did the short one goes on driver side and long one on passenger side?

I purchased both, then just compared them side by side when I was replacing them, I don’t remember anymore which one goes where but if you take one side out at a time and compare, they’re hard to mix up

Of course! I would say that for the cost, id just replace both. They are pretty simple and if you're already going to be digging around in the trunk for one side, you might as well just replace the other one. You would also know if the one that controls the open speed is blown, as your trunk would open extremely aggressively, but its a bit harder to know if the closing spring/shock has failed, which again is why id say its better to just do both while you're in there

I don’t remember off the top of my head anymore, but you’ll know once you remove one side and match it up, they can only really go on the side they’re designed for

One is longer than the other, i dont know off the top of my head if the longer one is the one responsible for opening/closing, but id just order both if you can so you can replace both anyways since they are pretty cheap

Not so easy to install as the video shows. At least the left spring is 1,5-2 cm shorter than the distance between fitting points. It is factually impossible to manually pull and clip. I had to pull from it attaching one side to a column and put a "["-shaped bar between spring ends maintenaining it enlarged. Then I finally was able to install it. Not easy and potentially dangerous for fingers and eyes if the bar escapes. If anyone doubts, I checked the reference and compared new and original and they are exact twins. So no mistake from my side. By the way, I think the problem is only the right spring, so you should only replace than one.

It's been a while since i performed this repair and the car is long gone by now but from what i remember, it was pretty straightforward. While the spring is being put in you can maneuver the trunk open & closed however much you need to in order to fit the spring into place, it's a little tricky but definitely not difficult. Also one spring is for when the trunk opens and one is for when it closes, definitely not 100% necessary to replace both unless they are both broken, but if you're going to be digging around in the trunk anyways, may as well replace both 👍🏼
