BMW F30 340i B58 Manual 6MT Long Term Ownership Review - Better than an M3?

Hey folks! Here's my attempt at my first ever video review and what better way to start than doing it on my '16 340i 6MT Estoril Blue II? I've had this car for six years now and absolutely loved every minute of it. The car is very near and dear to my heart but I tried to remain objective with some negatives towards the end.

For a car that can do 0-60 in the mid 4’s, seat 4 people at least 5’10” tall, and can be had for a reasonable price, the 340 M performance package is really hard to beat.

I also own a 340i granted with the 8 speed auto but I do believe for what you get it’s probably one of the best cars for the money, there cheaper faster cars but not ones that can hold 4 people and have such a luxurious ride while looking so good. I say if you wanna ball on a budget and beat 8-10 cars on the road in a race without spending over 30k boom bmw 340 b58😘

Honestly love my EB 340i. Went stage 2 and it’s insane for a 4 door daily. Just wish mine was standard. Beautiful car!!

If youre using it as a daily driver ya its a better buy than m3 for the money. Thats from experience with e46 e92 f82 f10 m cars comparing to 440 gran coupe. The new 240/340/440i are more than enough car for public roads. Ya theyre a whole lot softer and not as sharp as m2/3/4 but imo its plenty good. If you care about sound the b58 sounds better than s55 stock vs stock (mpe vs mpe). But s55 is wayyyy sharper. The sound is easily fixed with equal length midpipe too. Pros and cons to both but as far as car for the road 340 is better buy for the money.

what i find interesting is that the two best manual luxury cars are the bmw 340i and manual acura integra. how much is the bmw 340i manual? the integra is selling for 35k (2k under msrp)

I love the lack of tech in a way that there's less stuff to break overtime

It also makes for a better driver's car. I have a 2018 RWD 340i MPPSK and found one that had the "good" tech, and none of the driver's aids. Perfect combo imo. I added Carplay, and have the HUD (actually a brilliant driver's tool) and adjustable dampers and the digital dash. None of the aides though, like auto cruise, lane departure, ect. So looks and feels modern, but *I* and only *I* am driving the car. Only downside was I couldn't find a manual. The ZF8 is better than the DSG was in my B8.5 S4 though (even with TCU tuned) so if it had to auto, I'm glad it was this one. I agree the less bull-ish on the car, the less to go wrong during long-term ownership.

Such a nice spec. In Canada, it's impossible to get a non-xdrive and the manuals are extremely rare.

Frrr they are 35k for non m sport and 40 for msport with everything that's a lot for 5 year old car tbh and it's not an m3. One day hopefully they drop to 25k probably gotta wait another 3 years 2025 they should be good, just gotta find non modded one and kept well

Thank you! There are no real problems with these cars. The B58 engine has been proven to be very reliable and powerful. The 340i over the 335i(my last car). The engine is a big upgrade. Buy with no regret!

So I have the 2018 340i M-Sport Manual RWD. Absolutely love my car and glad I picked it up over the M3 and saved $20k. One thing though I've noticed on mine, especially shortly after startup and before it warms up, when I put it into 1-3rd gear I feel a clunk through the shifter. I'm not sure if that's a trans/engine/diff mount or the drive shaft is loose or something. The dealer said everything looked fine and they don't see any issues. Have you ever experienced anything like that in yours, am I just going crazy lol? Btw love the OEM+, thats what I want to do as well. BM3 tune, full turbo back exhaust, some intake stuff, wheels and coils.

I do notice it too in the 2020 b58, specially when it down shifts from 2 to 1 when is not warm

I think you might be talking about the clutch delay valve (CDV). Shifting into 2nd the car has this built in function to retard the shift if you do it too fast. You can remove it from the car pretty easily, it'll make quick shifting a bit easier. You could also be talking about something else entirely. Currently in an xDrive 440i manual.

Have had that in any manual car i've driven, its because the transmission is still cold, after driving a few miles its perfect. Never had any issues with the trans or noise or weird stuff

A few dealerships have a partnership with Dinan and will install/honor the warranty. I got it back when Steve Dinan owned it. They still support it.

What are the main things that go wrong with these 340i cars. Like on the e92 M3 is the Rod Bearing, TA, evaporator for the AC etc.

Honestly, pretty much nothing serious. The most common two issues that seem to crop up (and now we have a ton of these cars up over 150K, and even more heavily tuned) is the water pump might leak, and the PCV valve might tear/need replacement. Neither issues strand the car, and frankly people with moderate mechanical inclination can do the water pump in an afternoon in the driveway, and the PCV valve honestly can be replaced by anyone with basic hand tools and really little no to no inclination mechanically. Any other issues that seem to crop up are car or situation specific and not something common to the car. (2018 RWD 340i MPPSK)

I have not had PS4S on this car but those are the best street summers out there. I have Michelin AS3 all seasons on it which are great for year round.

No the tune does not add any fake burbles/pops. This is all natural. Pops came after my catted downpipe. Got louder after the mid-pipe. It's the stock muffler.

5:23 I doubt it added much feel. Maybe a bit more than stock but its still BMW EPS...one of the worst in the market when it comes to steering feel. The only BMW EPS that gets feel down right is the F87 M2 CS and F10 M5 CS.

You said that it has 3 modes? 🤔. Yours does not have sport+? I have a M Performance edition and have 4 modes.Actually 5 modes if I turn off everything by holding the button down for 5 secs.

Hey, B58 owner here (440i gran coupe 2017) i have this mysterious coolant loss... and it’s only 35K miles! 🤷‍♂️ i have to fill it like every 2 months from the min level to the Max. in the big reservoir, the small one for the intercooler is keeping perfectly the level. I will try replacing the reservoir cap for a new one, i’ve heard that is a failure in the cap because i can see like white evaporated residue at the edges of my reservoir. are you having the same issue?

Good job man. We had different priorities. Mine is long term reliability and warranty. I had warranty up to 100K. Sold the car at 82K. Not a single issue those 82K miles. It's also a manual transmission and stock clutch will slip on Stage 2 unless I upgrade it. The car was sold a few months back. I now have a G80 M3 manual pushing 670 wheel on stock clutch, turbo, and a piggyback lol.
