How to bleed brakes and change your brake fluid on a BMW F650GS. This is done on a 2012 with 3400 miles, and the rear brake fluid had already turned black and we discovered...that the ABS system had been completely dysfunctional when the dealer set the bike up because they left lots of air trapped in the system. This is why you may want to consider doing the work yourself, so it will be done right the first time.
Recommended brake fluid: amzn.to/2ayt8f1
Torque Settings: 7 Nm for brake bleed screw, 2.5Nm for the rear reservoir fastening scew

I changed the front brake fluid on my 2011 F650GS, however I was doing it by myself doing the normal bleeding procedure but ended up getting air in the system. After then using a vacuum system on the lower bleed valve I must have sucked through about 500ml of Dot4 fluid still to no avail. I then read on Adventure Rider that you can leave it overnight, by tying the brake lever back to the handle bar, and positioning the bike on the side stand so the brake line bubbles are rising all the way to the highest point ie (the reservoir). I did this, and in the morning it was still soft but after bleeding the air out of the wee top nipple (on the brake lever pump) it all then pumped up hard on the lever and still is all good. My advise is get someone else to pump the brake lever while you snap the nipple open and closed. Do not let air get into the system. Also don't crack the nipple open too far, else air can get sucked in through the nipple screw threads, even though you have the bleed tube connected to the container in the normal way. I have seen people use thread tape on the nipple to prevent this but in my opinion that method is messy and not really successful

Thanks for the comment - which version do you recommend ? I & my pal each has the Scarver variant of the F650 - belt driven 'girlie' bikes which never really took off but are great vehicles anyway. We prefer to do all the maintenance on them ourselves. AL

Not using the GS 911 to cycle the pump might leave some dirty fluid inside but I have been changing F800gs by just bleeding and it takes a at least a year for it to cloud up again. BTW it still looks like your rear reservoir fluid looks cloudy after. Definitely invest in a MityVac etc.

Essentially you need 3 people for the front reservoir. Two as you mentioned unscrewing the cap and in my opinion a third buddy pouring the brake fluid. Any objections?

Your section on the 911 diagnostic tool is very brief - any chance of a more detailed explanation of the advantages of buying one ? The shop manual for the Rotax-engined BMWs states unequivocally that no ABS-equipped bike can be safely bled / replenished unless a MoDiTec or similar analyser is used. The 911 costs here in Spain around 400 Euro - a major investment for a competent Weekend Warrior.

Get a One-Man brake bleeder (less than $10 at any auto parts store...). It has a check valve so it won't suck in air, and you don't have to have a buddy coordinating brake levers and bleeder screw closures. Also, many people recommend removing the calipers and expanding the brake pads to push the pistons in to expel residual fluid. Wedges are then placed between the pads to keep them fully open (look for James Von Baten BMW service DVD). Yes, the waste tube should be submerged into the waste fluid so as not to suck air. On any patch of dirt, you can easily initiate a rear wheel skid to cycle the ABS pump manually. (I mean, you are riding a GS, right?). You'll feel the rear wheel lock/release in cycles. Some say it's even a good idea to do this on a regular basis to "exercise" the ABS pump. However, initiating a front wheel skid could be a little trickier. ;-) For that the GS-911 tool would be handy. Furthermore, when I installed stainless steel brake lines on my R1150GS, it was suggested to bleed the ABS ports to remove any trapped air. There are two bleed nipples on the ABS pump - one for the front circuit and one for the rear. Why would that not drain any residual fluid trapped in the ABS pump without physically cycling the pump? (And essentially eliminate the need for the expensive GS-911 tool...).

Sure, but the GS911 allows you to modulate the ABS system, thereby clearing any old fluid out. Or, you can flush it out, and as long as you do not get any air in the system, you can slam on your brakes and the system will activate. That is a bit dangerous, though.

is the gs 911 used with a 2013 g 650 gs sertao ? What does it connect to and how do you change from front to back ? Can you make a video just showing how to use the gs 911 ?

You can look up the GS-911 website and you can see that this is a very powerful tool. Recently, they added TPMS and fuel strip calibration. Each of the standard model can support up to 10 BMW bikes. Are you sure that the model you are looking at is the standard GS-911 and not the shop version?

It is the cheapest version that plugs into your laptop computer. For $100 more you can get a bluetooth version, but that is a lot of money to spend. The cheapest version can handle up to 10 different bikes.

This video could have been great but it ended up as a mess.. Most probably bad editing. Think of the scenes you have to shoot, actually shoot them and then edit them properly. Get a cheap tripod ,you do not need a "camera guy" once you set it up. Your intro was great but after that you lost it. :)

No point whatsoever in showing a vid where you just ‘run the 911’ amd then don’t show the detail how to do it. Once over lightly is a waste of time - definitely more worth watching.
