BMW G20 3 Series Software Update Failed - Had to be Recovered!

BMW G20 Software Update Failed.
Not what I expected from a BMW especially when the update has to be done by the owner/user. This ruined my afternoon that I had planned and instead waited for the recovery which took over 6 hours.
BMW you should take note here - this is not just a one-off incidence - this has happened to a number of G20's.

My G20 has been nothing but issues since I brought it in November last year. I have had electric issues (more issues started yesterday), the transfer box is faulty, there is a large creaking sound from the rear suspension, there is a creaking sound when I turn the car on and off, it has needed additional soundproofing in rear door cards and sunroof, replacement cills in the boot, sunroof not closing, and a replacement head-height. It is so frustrating as the G20 is a lovely car and you get a lot for your money, however, the issues on my have just taking any love for the car I once had and I am battling with BMW to get things sorted. I just want a car that works as it should, 4 months in total my car has spent at BMW, not what you call reliable.

I had a lot if these "niggly" issues too.....the creaks etc I have fixed easily using some teflon tape around the window sills etc. Creaking rear suspension will most likely be the insulation trim where your rear window meets the boot lid.....it just needs greasing.

@@DownShiftThrottle thanks for your reply, I am losing faith as you can no doubt imagen. It is interesting you mention the rear boot trim, do you mean the rubber cill which can be seen when the boot is open, this was one of the items replaced by BMW recently, but the creaking still persists. I just posted a comment on the G20 Facebook page and someone mentioned they had a creaking sound which was down to the parcel shelf, perhaps that could be the issue on my car being at the rear.

The rear creak I found was the at the point were the boot meets the window. There is a weather strip which dries up and the boot begins to rub against it over bumps in road. Annoying squeak and creak.

Via OTA update? In my country, official firmware one is March 2020. They do have July 2020 in dealer ship but they allow to update only the car that have problem in 03.2020. They said that July 2020 still have issue.

This is amazing how brand like BMW do have these problems with OTA upgrades. I own 1/2021 produced 330E , there has been no upgrades available so far. And if there will be, maybe best solution to run it in BMW dealership front door.. :D

It happened with me. BMW 430i convertible. I was stuck with software upgrade failed problem. It was Sunday. No technician available to help. I left the car overnight in the shopping mall parking lot. The worst experience with BMW.

I just updated mine last week. Went fine, took a while but as someone else said in the comments, it gives you the option to automatically open the window which is done by location and some other fancy bits too. Hope you get it sorted

Thanks mate. I was just glad to get the car back to be honest. If only there was a cancel option that let the user cancel the upgrade in the event of failure.....

@@DownShiftThrottle Very true. One thing i have noticed about BMW as a whole is they do not have very intuitive systems. Not very user oriented.. Always having to get in contact with BMW to fix it instead of maybe doing it yourself. Car is great though 😄

Would Ur stage 1 tune get wiped off when bmw update the software? I heard they just wipe it off if u have stage 1 tune!

I had issues with my g20, it needs a new control unit so it’s in the dealership and a new control unit is on its way from Germany. Also AC stopped working after 2 weeks, Too many problems with the g20!!!

Took the AA man 4 hrs to lift/move my M140 as it was stuck in Park.. small baby steps and luckily no damage 👍🏻

Had exactly the same issue with my M135i which I had owned 2 days. Managed to get it started, but wasn’t working right. It’s currently with BMW. Absolutely gutted and really angry

ID7 is standard on the M Sport. I know it was not available on the SE model. Check with your dealership

I just bought one 3 days ago and now I'm truly worried. I did the software update on Saturday which was successful. I do have a strange suspension noise from the passenger side front and drowning noise when driving. Have you had this issue?

Never managed to get an OTA to actually install, back to the dealer later this week. Totally hacked off with G20 and the BMW brand, won't buy another one after this experience.

It's over the air....no need for a phone to be connected.....the car has a built in sim

I am having trouble updating software on my 64 plate (Sept 14) BMW 3 Series GT. Each time I try to update, using a pen drive, the idrive system shuts down around 28-29% and then restarts again. Main issue is with the iDrive system, as it seems to shut down when I turn the engine on initially, then takes few minutes before starting back up, including music and navigation system. During the summer months, iDrive has started to heat up and constantly shuts down and re-starts, especially if both radio and SAT NAV are working together. But if I turn off the SAT NAV, then the DAB radio system functions a lot longer, before shutting down and restarting again. Maybe I have two separate issues, one with the iDrive shutting down and re-starting; 2nd the software update not progression beyond 28-29% - as the iDrive system shuts down and restarts, in the process I have to re-start the software update process again. Any suggestion would be useful please. Many thanks. S

@@DownShiftThrottle My 2020 X5 did the same thing to me when I was out shopping today. BMW Assist was helpful and called out a tow truck to take it to the dealership, also sent an uber to take me home. Its weird how mine will only download the update while I'm driving. Will not be doing any updates myself in future...my car was delivered with early 2019 software. Only 300km on the car and off to the dealership.

I fortunate to get my car back within 48hrs. I have a friend who experienced the same problem.....the dealership had his car for 7 weeks! Let's hope you get yours back soon!

DownShift Throttle It allows you to select a location so every time you arrive at that location again your drivers window lowers automatically great for when I’m going to work where I have to operate a barrier for the car park and kfc or mcD’s drive thru lol

This apparently happens when the battery is not fully charged some recommend a long drive others have charged with a battery charger (which I'm trying now)

Hello , did anyone experienced any issues with the Android Auto ?? I own a g20 320i 2019 and when I bought the car the dealer told me is got android auto just need to be set up , he was actually wrong as the software was from 2019 with Apple Carplay so went back and asked for this to be sorted . Not a chance with these guys wasted long time to get it sorted .Yesterday had my mot so I asked them to get the software upgraded to the 2024 version and they did it for 80£ also it come up with Android Auto that was easy to get it connected but bad news come up next day when tried to connect it but didn't worked anymore such a disappointment. Did anyone else experienced this ?

My bmw x7 had the same problem! All of that is " bimmer code" because of this! I did not turn off the logo "M" and " motion video"

This is just ridiculous that the update fail causes a perfectly functioning car to ”break down”...All they have to do is to have a ”cancel” button there but no...Bmw is a great car but they need to learn how to code...

Thanks for the advice I will definitely be taking my G20 to the dealership when update becomes available , but have to say I had no issues with my first update after watching one of your video's 😊 Still no Android Auto yet I take it???
