BMW G80 M3 (2023) Oil Change | MOTUL | DIY | 4K

We finally got our 1200 mile break in service done! As most of you know, this service entails an oil change, as well as differential fluid flush. BMW's choice of oil for the S58 is 0W-30, which is not a weight we are a fan of running in our M3.
This video was not made to spark a debate over what oil is better/worse - our decision to run Motul 5W-40 X-Cess is exactly that - our personal decision. This video was made to document the process of changing the oil on your S58!
You'll need the following
32mm socket (3/8" or 1/2'' with extension) - For oil filter cap
E6 Socket - (1/4") - For screws that fasten expansion tank
17mm socket (3/8" or 1/2") - For engine drain plug
Flathead or pick - To remove o-ring's on filter/cap
Oil Filter (Genuine BMW or Hengst)
7 Quarts of your preferred oil
Funnel & Oil Drain Basin
Shop rags
It's a relatively simply process that entails about 20 minutes of your time. Everything went smooth besides dropping half a liter of Motul all over the shop floor! OH! - And we found a nail in the right front tire. All good though, she's not leaking yet!

Pro tip. Turn the bottle so the opening is at the top. You get air and fluid moving at the same time.

You have the wrong oil. You need oil with BMW longlife 04 approval and not with Longlife 01. Approved oils are 0W30, 5W30, 0W40 and 5W40 with BMW Longlife 04.

I got the right oil. The word wrong is subjective. The same engine in DTM class variants don’t take LL or FE oils amigo.

The Motul containers are in Liters not Quarts. I do think the BMW Service Manual says the S58 takes 7L of oil but other sources online say 6.5L or whatever equivalents in quarts. As it appears, as long as you're roughly in the ballpark, the digital gauge in the car doesn't seem to display a different level when between 6.5L or 7L. Nice walk-through video!

Great video! You had to lift it up again to torque the drain plug and put the cover back on. And to clean that spill, drain the used oil, throw the trash out. From my experience, it's never 30 minutes, but it always feels good. I never worked on that engine, but it seems like tons of fun. Also, will it be easier to reach the oil filter housing if you take the braces and the engine cover off?

What made you choose Motul instead of LiquiMoly? I always hear of people using LM for BMWs but I'm wondering if Motul is a better choice for wear protection.

Mbuso, yes - I plan to beat the absolute living piss out of this car including holding 140+ steady for extended periods of time while sitting at the rev limiter. I do not feel the 0W-30 is suited for the hell this S58 is going to be put through. And you bet when I visit Mexico I will record footage for KZbin.

How do you reset the oil life indicator? Can’t figure it out on iDrive 8

You need a proper scan tool to do this. It cannot be done form iDrive.

Get in the car and don’t press the brake. Hit the Start button 3 times fast to enter Diag mode. Then hold down the BC button on the left stock for 15 seconds to cycle through the different modes. One will be Oil Service Reset. Single presses will cycle through all the ones available in a loop. 15 second hold again on a specific one will prompt Reset “Yes” and then another hold will confirm. You exit Diag mode by pressing Start again when done to turn off. Try this process and see if it works.

Hola! Me agrada muchísimo ver a una mujer haciendo este tipo de trabajos, pero hay algunos detalles que le darían mucho más valor al vídeo! El filtro de aceite se introduce primero en la base del filtro y luego se coloca la tapa, eso porque el filtro tiene guía y lo ideal es tener total certeza de que entró bien.otro detalle es que teniendo la herramienta adecuada en la mesa no la uses, el oring se coloca con la misma herramienta que la sacasres.

I was expecting this! Ok so let's talk about efficiency. The 0W-30 used by BMW is formulated for better fuel efficiency and rated to cover a wider (lower) temp range of cold starts. I could care less about fuel economy. Motul has a higher HTHS. Lower HTHS is better for gas mileage. Higher HTHS provides better lubrication under higher loads/temps. The cold start protection offered by 0W vs 5W is minimal considering I let my car warm up properly. Now If I had lived in a region where constant -20 degree starts were a thing, that's a different story. If engine efficiency is the goal, that all gets thrown out the window when adding power modifying parts. A simple tune increases boost pressure. Increase in boost pressure decreases intake temps, allowing higher volume of air to be introduced into combustion chamber presumably with more fuel (piggybacks are NOT tunes) resulting in higher torque (HP is a fictitious number derived from torque) resulting in more power and as a byproduct more heat. More heat, less efficiency.

@@znmperformance You raised a good point especially with regards to tuning / heat and increased lub. The synthetic w- 30 I thought would be sufficient enough to hold viscosity with expansion @ 100f°. Just curious how long do you let your car heat up from cold start. P.S my car I ordered is exactly like yours, manual, same color, except the wheels. Been waiting for almost six months. It should be here in a couple of weeks.

I usually let it warm for 5 minutes if super cold out. Try to let it get to 190ish before really opening her up. A good comparison I like to make is this....when BMW does marketing video's with their S58 M3/M4 track cars being abused around a track - those cars are NOT running 0W-30. 6 months is how long I waited! It's well worth the wait, I promise!
